SHIMAMURA SHUNMEI: A SUPERB TOKYO-SCHOOL IVORY OKIMONO OF A BIJIN WITH HER PEKINGESEBy Shimamura Shunmei (Toshiaki, 1853-1896), signed Shunmei sakuJapan, Tokyo, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)The beauty kneeling, one knee over the other as she supports her Pekingese dog who is trying to wriggle free. The dog with big round eyes looking straight ahead as it awkwardly tries to find its feet on the ground, one paw supported on the bijin's hand as the other is raised to wave. The elegantly dressed woman clad in a formal kimono decorated with elaborate geometric motifs and foliate designs, the robe pools at the base as she sits, and the sleeves appearing to sway in the wind. The face with a sincere expression and gently parted lips, with the hair neatly coiffed and secured by bows, ornate pins, and a comb. Signed underneath SHUNMEI (Toshiaki) with a square seal saku [made by].HEIGHT 16.7 cmCondition: Very good condition with typical natural age cracks. Minor chipping to the edge of the dog's tail and to the hairpins of the lady. Provenance: From a private collection in Belgium, published in the commissioned private catalogue 'The Nibajama collection' no. 128.Born as the second son of Shimamura Shunjun (Toshikane), who worked for the Imperial Court in Asakusa, Edo, Shimamura Shunmei (Toshiaki, 1853-1896) had already inherited the skills of a great wood carver and by the age of sixteen he had already produced 16 rakan for the Kaiko temple in Ryogoku, Tokyo.He later changed his career to ivory carving due to the flourishing export market and is recorded in the Tokyo zoge chokoku bijutsu hyo (A Table of the Art of Ivory Carvings in Tokyo), printed in Meiji 19 (1886). He participated in the 2nd Domestic Industrial Exhibition (Naikoku kangyo hakuranakai) in Meiji 14 (1881) and was awarded the myogi (second prize) for his excellent skills as a carver. The hen looking alert with a slightly hunched posture as if searching for food. The smaller rooster with its tail hoisted in the air, its tall comb and wattle finely textured. A Leopold Lambert Automata of a Little Girl, French circa 1890, the Jumeau bisque head (with Depose, Tete Jumeau red stamp) with closed mouth, blue paperweight eyes and painted feature, wood and card body with bisque lower arms, standing on a red velvet covered base, when wound musical movement plays single air, her head moves from side to side whilst raising her right hand to her head, she then turns to her raised left hand to look into her mirror, 17 ½” (44cm) tall, (condition: in working order although attention needed to head movement, head perfect, right hand lacks thumb and three fingers, left hand lacks one finger, mirror replaced and lacks posy of flowers to other hand, wig sparse, underclothes original, silk dress probably later and in poor condition, base lacks wooden base and musical movement lacks some teeth to comb).

A Victorian coromandel wood ladies vanity case, with silver mounted accessories, London 1869, maker Chapman Son & Co (Oliver and Middleton Chapman), the case with Bramah locks. Height 13.5 cm, width 28.5 cm, depth 16.5 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The box itself is sound in structure. Plenty of wear to the brass edges and the veneer. The veneer itself has lifted on the top and there are clear splits that run through the rectangular top from one side to the other. When you open the lid it opens and closed very smoothly. There are areas of wear to the edges of both the lid and the base. The interior is part lined with a deep blue velvet, this is much worn and dirty. The leather tray itself lifts out comfortably. It is intact but again with areas of wear through use. All the glass containers are intact, one or two do have small chips to their bases but overall the structural condition is fairly sound. The plated lids themselves are engine turned and with the odd scratch etc but again intact and without splits or losses. Overall condition well used but complete. No comb and no key with this lot.

VAT)Condition Report: No damage to mirror plate, the tortoiseshell has moved slightly in frame revealing underside, silver handle scratched, one hairbrush has small dent to tip of handle, both clothes brushes have minor dents. Case good but lacks comb. Tray is generally good but has an old soldered repair to back where tortoiseshell is damaged where pins were holding it in the frame. One other corner has loss (not visible to fascia) and other corner lacks a pin. Pin tray good
