There is some wear to the marks, but they are generally still legible. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use as well as some very minor bruises. There is a small split to the gold mount on the comb. There is some loss and wear to the bristles on the brushes. The total gross weight is 29oz 1dwt, 904gr.

There is one diamond missing and there is heavy repair work of lead solder to the reverse. One of the slides does not attach to the comb. Possibly adapted from a tiara, last quarter of the 19th century. Each have pin and revolver catches and two detachable tortoiseshell combs. They bear no hallmark nor stamp but in our opinion would test as silver and gold. The approximate qualities of the diamonds are; colour I/J/K, clarity SI1/SI2/I1. Gross weight 30.9 grams. CR made 11.10.21.

dating: about 1570 provenance: North Italy, Burgonet with high, twisted crest, in one piece with the skull, with the sharp brim and with the nape-guard. A restoration at the comb and an antique plaque fixed on the right side of the skull. The surface with Pisan style decorations. With bands featuring armors trophies on a granulated background, bordered with twisted frames and with round featuring portraits. Antique cheeck-pieces, restored pivots. Iron rivets with brass rosettes. Fine breast-plate worked in Pisan style, of high quality. Ribbed at the center, featuring longitudinal bands with trophies on a granulated background. At the center an effigie of an old-fashioned warrior, the breasts inside circles and with grotesque armors all over the upper part. Twisted, engraved neckline and pauldron small-plates. The back-plate worked en suite with the breast-plate, featuring an antique restoration on one side. Two-plate neck-collar, decorations en suite with the breast-plate. Pauldrons with Pisan style decoration, each with two big, slightly-relieved decorations at the center inside circles and bands with parts of armors, as well as twisted frames. Complete brassards, all with Pisan style decorations. Knuckle-shields with back parts and cuffs. Mounted on an exhibition mannequin with sixteenth-century vests, partially made with cloth and with a fine, sculpted head. Total height with mannequin and base: 215 cm. Provenance: 'Powerscourt'sell, (Christie's) September, 24th and 25th 1984 (n.393). The armour was bought in Italy in 1836 by the sixth Viscount Powerscourt. Traditionally, the armour was worn by Alfonso Duke of Ferrara. height as shown circa 103 cm.

Adjustable visor with eye holes and decorated with double outlines, provided with lifting knuckle-shield. The ventail probably of a later period, provided with air holes. Nape-guard and neck-guard with single plate, with edged featuring a recessed band, double outlines and smooth rope. Several rivets of a later period. Gorge with three plates, neckline with twisted and engraved rope. Breast-plate ribbed at the center, with pauldron small-plates and neckline featuring thick rope engraved and twisted. Massive, two-plate waist-plate with single outlining. Tassets with remains of engraved bands and smooth ropes. both with an antique restoration made in the time of use. Swiss-style pauldrons with fanned-out wings hinged to a brass mount shaped as a lion's head with a ring in its mouth. The rear part of the plates with remains of a band engraved at the center, en suite with the tassets. Knuckle-shields with flaked fingers, single outlines and cuffs with ropes featuring twisted engravings, en suite with the elbow-pieces. Smooth back-plate. Exhibited on a fine mannequin, probably of early 20th century, complete with base, worked differently from the armour period, made of cloth and wood. Height: 101 cm circa. Elegant, coeval armour, the helmet is not original yet antique and appropriate. Of strong visual impact. height total with base 189 cm.

Iron leather strings. Movable cheeck-pieces with air holes and ropes worked like the helmet. The nape-guard fixed with rivets. Breat-plate ribbed at the center and a little bit rounded with simple borders, iron, knotted clutches on the sides and straps on the upper side. Gorget with three-plate back-pieces and thick, twisted rope. Six-plate pauldrons. Modern brassards. Inarticulated gauntlet wit all the scales. Cuffs worked with relieved bands. Knee-cop that can be converted into tassets, with hammered and twisted borders. height armour cira 128 cm.

Raisable, cusped visor, with narrow eye-holes and long knuckle-shield. Ventail with air holes on both sides, decorated differently. Beaver with release-button. Nape-guard and neck-guard with one plate with swallow-tailed border and twisted rope. Gorget with three-plate loin-guards, the front side ribbed at the center. The breast-plate ribbed at the center with marked tapul, neckline with thick rope followed by the remains of two marks (the right one maybe is the Nuremberg mark), and an 'A' surmounting a cross. The pauldron small-plates with a thick, twisted rope. The breast and back plate with gleanings on the upper side. The culet with a single plate. The front back-piece with three plates and provided with knee-cops that can be converted into tassets (three segmented can be disassembled). Complete brassards. Inarticulated gauntlets. Some reparation and restoration, mostly on the helmet. Provided with restored leather strings with buckles. Mannequin not included. height armour circa 124 cm.

dating: Late 16th Century provenance: Southern Germany, With skull in two pieces (the center of the comb seems worked in one piece), provided with comb with twisted border, chanfrin with storm brim and twisted border, featuring place for the comb, beaver provided with two-plate neckguard, two foldaway plate above the beaver, the upper one with cross-shaped eye-holes, the lower one with lines of rectangular, oblique aerator holes, the lower border decorated and twisted; carved plume-holder. Beautiful black and white decoration, the white parts richly engraved with birds and floral motifs on a granulated ground. height 26.5 cm.

dating: late 16th Century provenance: North Italy, Iron skull in one piece, with average tall comb and boat-shaped brim, twisted border, small defects and missing parts, at the base a row of rivets (most of the missing). The entire surface is finely and majestically embossed with high and bas-relieved decorations, depicting a battle on horseback framed by grotesque masks and bands, on a side, and a group of warriors on horseback crossing a river on the other, framed en suite; the comb decorated with busts, animals and masks, the brim with masks and mythical animals between floral motifs. Embossed helmets are hard to find on the international market, see a small series of Italian embossed helmets in 'Europäische Helme' by Müller/Kunter, numbers 69-72, 112, 119 and 121. height 23 cm.

dating: last quarter of the 16th Century provenance: Italy, One-piece skull with a high comb (repaired at the top), row of iron and brass rivets (some restoration); brim with riveted and file-roped border; the comb is decorated with bands and trophies as the skull's surface, with mythological scenes surrounded by interlaced bands and trophies. Various small restorations. See similar helmets and decorations in the Odescalchi Collection in Venice. height 32 cm.

dating: Late 15th Century provenance: Germany, Hammered skull in one piece, featuring a large and short comb at the top, with outlined borders and base; engraved with flowers at the base, then ribbed along the long tail; three grooves at the front, on each side; air holes decorated with carved, flower-shaped rivets (one of eight is missing), a row of rivets for the scabbard in the middle. Fringed border, a visible mark of Nuremberg at the tip, on the back. Raisable visor with wide eye-slot, protruding at the center and ribbed, carved and engraved on the sides with waves (en suite with the crest), held by flower-shaped rivets; the lateral border carved with a tip, the lower border en suite with the skull. A button-lock with inner spring on the right side. Provenance: Max Kuppelmayr Collection. A private collection in England. Illustrated in 'Sammlung Kuppelmayr' and described together with the complete armor N° 2, provided with the picture of the stamp. 'Eurpaische Helme', Muller Kunter, pag. 96 picture 66/67. 'Waffen und Rustungen', P. Martin, pag. 188, nr. 154. A similar sample, kept in the Bayerischen Nationalmuseum (see Martin) also shows flower-shaped rivets. Max Kuppelmayr, the manufacturer, started to produce his wonderful collection around 1845 and, at the time of his death in 1888, it was one of the most important collection of European antique arms in the world. His son, Rudolph Kuppelmayr, decided to catalogue the collection in an outstanding volume which was presented to the public in January 1895. The 24th of June 1919 the collection was sold at auction by the Hugo Helbing Gallery in Munich. dimensions 40.4 x 21 x 21.7 cm.

dating: Second half of the 19th Century provenance: Germany, A man-at-arms helmet with skull in one piece, hammered, with low, twisted comb featuring wide longitudinal fullers at the sides. Intact visor ribbed at the center, with rectangular eye-holes surmounting the round and convex mouthpiece, provided with a double row of rectangular air holes and outlines. The beaver and the neck-guard with swallowtailed border and roped, twisted border. Closures with pressure-buttons. Helmet with iron rivets. Three-plate nape-guard worked en suite with the skull and with festooned border. The visor's hinges with rosette-shaped head. Gorget with four plates, roped neckline provided with a thick, twisted rope. Bulging breast-plate, with pauldrons and neckline featuring typical, very thick, twisted ropes bent towards the outside. The right side with a folding rest. The back-plate worked en suite with the breast-plate.The front backpiece with three plates, the back also with three plates. Tassets with four plates, both with the lower border featuring a thick spiral. Complete brassards. Pauldrons provided with neck-collar, elbow pieces with big wings. Inarticulated gauntlets decorated with convergent risers. Complete full-leg defenses, provided with sabatons with the same decorations as the other parts; smooth greaves. The whole armor is finely worked with risers and longitudinal fullers; several plates with festooned borders. Complete with leather stirngs, rivets with iron head. The armor is on a mannequin complete with wooden pedestal. Work of a very high quality, that can be compared to the antique original ones. Total height with base: circa 240 cm. height armour circa 174 cm.

dating: First half of the 16th Century provenance: Europe, Flat plate, of elongated shape with remains of frames engraved with racemes. The external wheel at the center engraved with a sun and fixed by a thick ring-nut shaped as a crescent. Tang maybe with remains of a mark shaped as a double comb. Another item, similar in mechanism and manufacture, slightly bigger but in worse conditions, was sold for 1200 euro in our sale (auction fee excluded, auction 111, lot 468). length plate 15,7 cm.

AN ENGLISH CIVIL WAR PERIOD PIKEMAN'S ARMOUR, comprising breast plate with raised medial ridge drawn down to a peak and with shallow skirt, the whole with turned and roped edge and struck with a crowned IR mark beneath the collar, the tassets of six simulated lames with shallow gullies and turned edges, each side decorated with a heart flanked by diamonds and with rivet decoration, the back plate with shallow gullies and turned edges also struck with a crowned IR mark, the two-piece pot with broad downturned brim, the gullies with stud decoration, the turned shallow comb flanked with tramline decoration to the skull, also struck with a crowned IR mark. Re-leathered strapwork, minor splits, perforations, lamination and mounting holes.
