AN UNUSUAL AND RARE 28-BORE DOUBLE-BARRELLED FROG-MOUTHED BLUNDERBUSS BREAST-PISTOL, UNSIGNED, no visible serial number, probably Southern Mediterranean circa 1780, with over-under octagonal to round 15in. iron barrels, both muzzles strongly flaring and of oval form, traces of scroll engraving throughout, both breeches struck with repeated oval maker's marks separated by the makers initials in a rectangular frame (illegible), solid top-tang, long bevel-edged lockplate with rectangular aperture to the pointed tail possibly for an absent safety catch or earlier mechanism, the remainder including the swan-necked cock with line scroll engraving, selectable pan tray for top or bottom barrel, short handrail walnut full-stock inlaid with white-metal wire scrolls, a stylised tulip behind the top-tang, a moulded escutcheon to back of wrist and a star to lower right of grip, the heel-plate and heel of butt (diagonally from front of comb to toe) fully covered in embossed sheet white metal featuring stands of flags and military trophies (traces of possible gilding), replacement iron side-plate, sheet iron trigger and bow, incomplete white metal fore-end tip, the right side of fore-end a separate fillet and no provision for ramrod (cleaned overall, some losses to inlet decoration and detail), overall length 25 3/4in., weight approximately 2 5/8lbs..

Co 1917 SHT LE' and further stamped 'III' next to a small cog, the barrel stamped 'Parker-Hale Birmingham.4', various broad arrow stamps and proof marks to the side of the breech and mounted with a Bisley Works AGA folding mechanical sight, SN:81306.Provenance: The Captain Allan Marshall Collection.Additional InformationOverall solid but used condition, there is a small area of loss to the stock to the right hand side of the back strap where the maker's details are stamped. There is a later comb raiser crudely glued to the stock. In front of the breach on the top of the barrel there is a split to the woodwork that goes from the breach to behind the back sight. Appears mechanically complete and functional although it would be recommended to pass it through a gunsmith before use. This is a Section 1 Firearm, it is not deactivated.
