Lot 139

A WW1 Imperial German Prussian soldiers Pickelhaube leather helmet. Of traditional form, with a leather skull, brass comb to the rear section, brass spike, and Prussian brass eagle applied to the front of the helmet. Correct coloured cockades / rosettes to the sides, one of which is the National colours, and the other Prussian colours. Complete with brass peak guard, and leather chin strap. The helmet has an original 9 tongue leather liner. Condition: generally good and solid, with some age and service wear. Both the front and back peak have some ‘jellification’ to the surface of the leather, as is often seen. The black / red / white cockade would appear to have possibly been repainted at some point in the past, but the wear suggests this was some time ago. Slight age related shrinkage to the leather skull, which means the Prussian does stand a little proud from the helmet. The leather liner tongues are somewhat dry with age, and have some losses to the tips to a number of them. Slight depression to the leather on the right hand side, but nothing that detracts.

Lot 133

A M1871 Pattern Imperial Bavarian Reserve Officers Pickelhaube. Patent leather skull with cruciform mount to the crown, each with raised star detail. Elongated spike with ‘string of pearls’ detail to the base of the spike. Bavarian arms mounted to the front, with white metal cross to the centre boss. Brass edged peak to the front, and non vented comb to the back part of the skull. Black painted cockades with red painted centre to each side. Brass scales chin strap with leather backing, and central fixing clasp. Tan leather sweatband, with green silk liner to the front peak, and red silk liner to the neck guard. Green cotton liner to the inside of the skull. Notes: it’s our opinion that helmet has had some refurbishment in the past, with the chin scales perhaps being a later replacement, and the tapering spike possibly replacing an original fluted example. Condition: generally good. Good shape, colour and patina to the leather skull. Patination and tarnishing to the brass furniture, and a little verdigris to one of the chin scale mounts. Minor paint loss to the painted cockades. Signs of wear to the leather sweatband, and a split to the leather of the band near the peak.
