An Equestrian Full Armour For Man And Horse In German Late 16th Century StyleThe armour comprising a close-helmet with skull rising to a roped comb, plume-holder at the rear incised with spiral lines, beak-shaped visor pierced with horizontal vision slits, rectangular slotted 'breaths' beneath, pivoted at the same points as the upper- and lower-bevors, the former pierced with rectangular slotted 'breaths' over each side, lifting pegs and sprung locking-catch on the right, the latter shaped to the chin and with turned and roped lower border, gorget of overlapping plates front and rear, hinged together and with locking pin-catch, breast-plate of peascod form embossed with a volute at the top and drawn-out to a rounded point above a short flange at the bottom, the latter carrying the skirt and tassets of six overlapping plates, back-plate shaped to the back and with three-plate culet en suite with the tassets, fully articulated vambraces with riveted haute-pieces and fingered gauntlets, full leg harness each detachable at the knee, polyenes each with side-wing, greaves hinged together and with round-toed sabatons both of eight overlapping lames, the main edges turned and roped, and with dome-headed rivets throughout; the horse armour comprising a shaffron with turned and roped edges bordered by dome-headed lining rivets, and with scrolled escutcheon surmounted by a plume-holder, crinet of seven articulated plates, large crupper of two plates covering the flank, both embossed with sprays and with five applied brass fleur-de-lys, and secured by steel-mounted leather straps, a brass roundel embossed with a lion-mask over the top of the tail, large peytral en suite with the crupper plates, graduated rein mounts with arched lower edges, all with turned and roped borders, and saddle of padded burgundy velvet with gilt brocade borders and fringe, all on a black fibreglass model of a horse caparisoned in blue velvet with a repeated pattern of trellised quatrefoils, and bordered with green and red woollen fringes; together with an iron bit and a pair of arched stirrups decoratively pierced and fluted over each side: on a wooden base painted blackFootnotes:Cf. a related armour sold in these Rooms, Antique Arms, Armour & Modern Sporting Guns, 26 May 2021, lot 147For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
