A FINE 60 BORE GERMAN (THURINGIAN) WHEEL-LOCK CARBINE, SUHL, LATE 16TH CENTURY with tapering barrel chiselled against a finely matted ground over its full length with the five allegorical figures, probably of the seven liberal arts, within architectural niches surrounded by leafy tendrils inhabited by exotic birds, a hound and a rabbit, struck with the maker's mark (Neue Støckel 2767) over the breech, engraved tang signed 'HW', flat lock retained by two side nails, struck with leafy tendrils on a matted ground and stamped with the maker's mark en suite with the barrel, fitted with raised wheel-cover decorated with a double eagle displayed, engraved dog formed as a marine monster, sliding pan-cover with button release (spring defective), and delicately filed safety spring with button lever, full stock inlaid with engraved staghorn plaques within segmental frames, comprising leafy mouldings enriched with pellets over the fore-end, flowers and scrolls about the tang, a devils mask between two scrolling demi-masks behind the ramrod-pipe aperture, a strapwork frame inhabited by an owl and two rabbits opposite the lock, foliate strapwork about the trigger, hooked butt formed with a slender comb decorated with a classical vase beneath and bouquets of fruit above, the left and right with differing espagnolette masks on strapwork panels, exotic birds and flowers, and all enriched with scrollwork and pellets, associated iron trigger-guard, engraved staghorn ramrod-pipe and fore-end cap (small cracks and chips, a small numbers of inlays missing, some minor restorations), and associated horn-tipped wooden ramrod 63.5 cm; 25 in barrel Provenance Thomas Davies-Colley, Newbold Estate, Bruera, Chester, circa 1890 Thence by descent The treatment of the barrel and lock belongs to a small group of wheel-lock firearms including a number with profusely inlaid stocks previously attributed Klaus Hirt of Wassungen. A pair of such pistols, with the same mark as the present carbine and also with a double eagle on the lock, were formerly in the Saxon Royal Collections, Dresden, sold Sotheby & Co, London, 23 March 1970, lot 66. Another pistol decorated in this manner was sold Sotheby's Olympia, lot 26 June 2003. The leafy tendrils on the barrel and lock are characteristic of Suhl firearms of this period a number of which have stocks carved en suite. For a discussion of this group, many of which are preserved in the former Saxon Electoral Armoury, now the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden see Schaal 1978, pp.19-33.

A FINE GERMAN SAPPER'S BURGONET OF SHOT-PROOF WEIGHT, LATE 16TH CENTURY with rounded one-piece skull rising to a notably high, file-roped medial comb, projecting forward to a flat obtusely-pointed integral peak and backwards and downwards at its rear to a short obtusely-pointed neck-guard, and fitted at each side with a later hinged cheek-piece flanged outwards at its lower end to serve as a continuation of the neck-guard and pierced at its centre with five small auditory holes in dice-formation, the rear of the peak pierced with a circular hole to accommodate a later curved nasal-bar of circular section terminating at its upper end in a pointed hexagonal finial with a moulded base, and retained by a sturdy hasp and wing-headed screw, the edges of the peak and neck-guard formed with finely file-roped inward turns and the surfaces of all parts of the helmet retaining a black finish (refreshed with paint) 30.5 cm; 12 in The nasal-bar and cheek-pieces appear to represent working-life modifications.

AN ITALIAN COMB-MORION, CIRCA 1580 formed in one piece with a rounded crown rising to a high roped medial comb decorated to either side of its apex and base with incised lines, and an integral brim turned down at each side and rising to an acute point at the front and the rear (the front point bruised), its edge decorated with a file-roped inward turn bordered by a narrow groove, the base of the crown pieced at the nape with a pair of holes for the attachment of a plume-holder (missing) and encircled by six (originally fourteen) lining-rivets with brass rosette-washers, retaining its original blued finish overall The morion is one of a series offered for sale between the World Wars by W. H. Fenton & Sons of 11 New Oxford Street, London. An undated circular of Fenton (photographic copy held in Royal Armouries Library, Leeds) illustrates a morion almost identical to that offered here. Fenton was selling the morions by at least 1933. According to a later verbal report of his armourer, Theodore Egli, they had been obtained in Ireland. Examples are now to be seen in the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds, (Inv. No. IV. 449), the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Acc. Nos Hen. M. 32, 33 & 34-1933, and the Glasgow Museum and Art Gallery. The group also included "Spanish" morions. See See Dufty & Reid 1968, pl. CII.c, Eaves, op. cit., pp. 161-2) and Eaves 2002, pp. 153-5.

A GERMAN COMB-MORION, NUREMBERG, CIRCA 1580, WITH LATER ETCHED DECORATION formed in one piece with a hemispherical crown rising to a high roped medial comb, and an integral brim turned down at each side, rising to an obtuse point at the front and rear (the front one slightly bruised), decorated around its edge with a file-roped inward turn, the front struck with the quality-control mark of the city of Nuremberg (the rear and sides each pierced with later wiring-holes), the base of the crown encircled by twelve round-headed lining-rivets with rosette-washers of iron (one washer missing), etched on each side of the crown with a circular cartouche enclosing, on the right, a representation of the Sacrifice of Isaac, and on the left, a mounted huntsman carrying a spear, in each case overlaying a pattern of alternating vertical bands respectively comprised of arabesque interlace and scrolling foliage inhabited by birds of prey, the latter design repeated on the comb and the brim and involving in the case of the former, oval cartouches enclosing, on the right, a soldier holding a banner, and on the left, a drummer, each in contemporary dress, the etching executed throughout on a blackened and stippled ground (light wear and patination overall 29.1 cm; 11 1/2 in high
