An important primary source for Covent Garden 1757 – Theatre – Covent Garden – John Dunstall and the Beefsteak Club two original ms notebooks, dated 1757/58, the first doubtless in the hand of Tunstall recording the weekly meetings of the Beefsteak Club [aka The Sublime Society of Beef Steaks], the second inscribed ‘An Inventory of the Household Goods and wearing apparel of John Dunstall. Taken May 22nd 1758 this also includes a second section which appears to be accounts for the theatre. Both books in original limp calf binding, 8vo, 28pp, 15pp & 2pp respectively. An important and hitherto unknown source on the Royal Theatre Covent Garden at this time. The first notebook lists various meetings, the first commencing on September 17th 1757, with those present mentioned. This almost certainly relates to the Sublime Society of Beef Steaks which was founded at the theatre in 1735 by John Rich. It was frequented by actors, artists, noblemen, officers, statesmen etc with a motto of ‘Beef and Liberty’ which reflected the patriotic, anti-European nature of the club. Later membership would include Dr Johnson, the Prince of Wales [George IV], Henry Irving and W S Gilbert. Entries in the notebook reflect people nominated as ‘Beef’ [no doubt the chairman of the day’s proceedings] and ‘forfeit’ – referring to people who had erred from the strict rules and payment terms of the meetings. The second book provides an insight into Dunstall’s situation with a long inventory of his goods – some of which are noted as belonging to ‘The Beef Stake Club’. The second section of this book is described as ‘Henny’s Account’ commencing on October 5th 1771 and these clearly refer to expenses incurred by the theatre – such as a hairdresser’s bill, binding for music books, comb powder, a payment on account of £90 to a Miss Eldridge who may have been an actress, a pit ticket, a pair of buckles etc. The General Manager of the theatre at this time was David Garrick. Dunstall was a well known second tier comic actor and an accomplished singer. There is also reference to the fact that Dunstall’s wife was also an actress in the company.
