A 19th century walnut cased Fortuna music box. Operating via a single comb to fit 8.5" discs, five of which are included. The outer case has 'Fortuna' painted on the lid and the side with pyrography script 'Jul Heinz Zimmerman, Leipzig'. A French 19th Century Cuirassier’s Helmet in white and yellow metal, with a gilt metal comb, to each side floral leaf decoration. The front is with a Medusa’s head, below this a flaming grenade. the rear of the helmet with a black horse hair tail. To the left side a gilt metal plume holder and plume and two large gilt circular boss supports an inter linked , metal backed chin scales. The interior retains part of its original leather sweatband

Lots 642-645The Cowell Family IvoriesThe following ivory carvings were in the collection of Mr and Mrs George Cowell at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1925 on Mrs Cowells death ‘Treasues Of Art’ from the collection numbering some twenty items were given to the Victoria and Albert Museum. A press release was issued at the time ‘The Victoria and Albert Museum has received an important accession to its collection of Medieval and Renaissance Art by the bequest of the late Mrs George Cowell. Her son Mr Athelstan Riley has generously renounced a life interest in the bequest and the objects are now on exhibition in the Central Court of the Museum.’ This bequest comprised primarily ivories but also Limoge enamels and maiolica. An ivory and silver plated retractable comb, c.1900, 3 1/8in. (7.9cm.) long; together with an ivory and brass folding 12in. pocket rule; an ivorine Saynor hawkbill pocket knife; and a 19th century ivory handled fleam. (4)* Condition: - Comb: Small crack to one corner of ivory. Otherwise good.- Rule: Chip to ivory beside hinge and also a crack to same place on opposite side. Some rust showing to hinge parts - there is also some rust coloured discolouration to the ivory in places. - Saynor knife: Some scuffing to celluloid. Blade has some light rust tarnishing along edge of blade.- Fleam: Some tiny nicks to edge of blade. Small chips across end of handle.
