An impressive officer’s helmet of the 2nd Belgian Regiment of Carabiniers, c 1815-20, gilt brass skull and peaks with applied gilt mounts, comprising embossed headband, acanthus side ornaments, rayed ear rosettes with lion head centres, lion head helmet plate and tall ornamental comb with panelled sides and grenade in front, black hair plume with short tail. Good Condition, retaining much original gilt (lining, chinscales and side plume missing). Plate 50. Note: see lot 259 a miniature of an officer with similar helmet on table.
A Belgian cuircassier’s helmet c 1815 of the 5th Regiment, steel skull, broad beaver fur headband, leather peak, brass binding to rim and peak, tall brass comb with panelled sides, Medusa Head finial over breastplate bearing “5” badge to the front, black hair shaving brush plume and long hair falling back horsehair plume, leather backed chinscales, with star on disc ear roundels, leather and silk lining. Good Condition, (sword stroke dent to skull, minor wear and tarnish commensurate with age) Plate 51
A trooper’s helmet of the 1st Life Guards 1815, black leather skull, gilt brass peak with edge binding, all round headband embossed with scales, plate bearing crowned reversed and interlaced “GR” cypher, with small tablet below stamped “First Life Guards”, socket for side plume, scalloped, leaf and Medusa head embossed comb with blue and red wool crest. A 19th century Continental cylinder music box, the rosewood and inlaid case with canted corners, playing six tunes, 57cm wide x 15cm high x 20cm deep CONDITION REPORT: Lot 166 - in working condition. Case: colour fading, watermark, signs of old worm to lid, some inlay lifting and lacking, cracks to veneers along canted corners, back feet lacking and front right only partial, no key, pin to lock lacking, extensive rubbing and general wear and tear as with age. Comb teeth are all good, with some surface rust, as best as can be determined, all pins are present.
A MUSICAL BOX late 19th century, the 12.5cm pinned cylinder set to a gilded steel bed, playing a series of airs (probably six) and flanked by a winding lever to one side, and stop / start and change / repeat levers to the other, in a stained and ebonized case, the lid interior stamped 'J.H. Ebblewhite / Aldgate London', the lid exterior and front panel with boxwood line inlay, 12cm high, 32.5cm wide, 17.5cm deep. Condition of Lot 1067. Comb with full set of teeth. Spring good and mechanism plays, but only with manual pressure to frame above the fly wheel. Change/repeat function requires attention. Case generally good. Lacking key.
A 'BELLS, DRUM & CASTANET IN SIGHT' MUSICAL BOX Swiss, late 19th century, the 28cm pinned cylinder set to a gilded steel bed, playing six airs and flanked by a winding lever to one side, and stop / start and change / repeat levers to the other, the mechanism striking on six bells arranged in pyramid fashion, with a drum to one side and castanet to the other, the lid interior with a printed and hand-written tune sheet marked 'Fabrique en Geneve' and numbered '26971' and '321', the walnut case with quarter-veneered tulipwood cross-banding, 26.5cm high, 51.5cm wide, 29cm deep. Condition of Lot 1068 Comb with full set of teeth but one with sheared tip. Spring good and mechanism plays, although slightly out of time in places, and without engagement of bells, drum and castanet. Case generally good. Stop /start and change/repeat lever plaques modern replacements . Lacking key.
A closed helmet in the XVI century style dating: 19th Century provenance: Europe Skull in one piece with short, twisted comb featuring longitudinal, fluted decorations, with an iron plume-holder on the back, on the right the button to release the beaver. Full visor, cusped and ribbed at the centre, with long eye-slots and rectangular air holes. Beaver with neck-guard in one piece, with button to release the ventail; recessed margin and twisted roping. Two-plate nape-guard with bordered en suite, featuring a series of fluted decorations en suite with the skull. Fine helmet in the Maximilian style, with skull in one piece; craft of extraordinary quality, faithful reproduction of the original ones of the epoch. dimensions: height 29,5 cm.
