Aubrey's father, also John (c.1606-1679), was created a baronet at the Restoration; the younger John was a patron of his cousin and namesake, the famous antiquary and biographer (1626-1697). 2) Henry Pelham Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, 4th Duke of Newcastle under Lyme (1785-1851), landowner and politician (armorial binding; 20th century Clumber Park bookplate to front pastedown). Newcastle 'gained the reputation of representing all that was worst about the English aristocracy' (ODNB); the library at the former ducal seat of Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire, was sold after the house's demolition in 1938. A World War I leather Howitzer sight case containing personal effects. Including, pipes, spectacles, combination campaign cutlery set, sergeant cloth badge, folding comb and pocket knife etc. Stamped inscription to the case top very feint. Short split across the leather hinge. Overall in good order.

A pair of 19th Chinese sancai glaze figurines depicting Fenghuang (phoenix), approximately 32 cm (h). [2] Condition Report - Hairline cracks running around the neck of both models, (does not run all the way round and cannot be felt through the glaze in areas) possible restoration. Restoration to the head of one model to the comb and wattle and a chip to the head, hairline cracks around some of the green floral decoration on the tree trunks and a small hairline crack to the base of one figure

A Victorian walnut cased table top polyphone, the top with marquetry inlaid panel and blind fretwork decorated frieze opening to reveal the movement No'd. 31069 (circa 1890), together with approximately 80 various discs. Size approx 32cm wide x 55cm wide CONDITION REPORTS The mechanism does appear to work though is dirty throughout so could probably benefit from a good clean/sympathetic restoration. The movement is a double comb, the discs are 39.5cm diameter. There is a winding key with the piece although whether it is the original is not known. The case whilst basically sound requires restoration in several areas where the veneers have lifted or been damaged. There is light surface scratching and discolouration throughout - see images for further details.
9th-12th century AD. A bronze comb with openwork decoration, to the top two stylised horses, engraved roundels to the body; series of teeth below; suspension ring to the top. 11.1 grams, 65mm (2 1/2"). From the family collection of a South East London collector; formerly acquired in the late 1950s. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
100 BC-200 AD. A ceramic figure of a bird(?) with arched comb, applied eyes above the beak and broad collar, splayed legs and wedge-shaped tail to the rear; mounting hole to the underside. See Winning, H. Pre Columbian Art of Mexico and Central America, Abrams, New York, 1968, for examples of early Colima clay sculpture. 52.4 grams, 75mm (3"). Property of a Brussels gallery; acquired on the European art market. Fine condition.
2nd-4th century AD. A bronze group comprising dress pins and styli with aviform finial, one a profile head with comb. 77 grams total, 14-18cm (5 1/2 - 7"). Property of a European gentleman; formerly in a German private collection formed in the 1950-1970s. [4, No Reserve] Fine condition, repaired.
