A Good Early Lever-Wind Musical Box Playing Six Airs, By Nicole Frères ser. no. 41290, Gamme no. 2311, playing a nice selection including two aria passages of Gounod's Romeo & Juliet, further works by Meyerbeer and Offenbach, single-spring motor and single-section comb, on plain brass bedplate in red interior, period buff tunesheet, in blonde polished mahogany case with inlaid floral lid - 18.1/2in. (47cm) wide, the cylinder 11in. (28cm)
An Early Lever-Wind Musical Box Playing Eight Airs circa 1860, ser. no. 23340, Gamme no. unknown, with single-spring motor, single-section comb on plain brass bedplate, in red stained interior, lacking tunesheet, in polished mahogany case with the veneered lid featuring inlaid diamond in ebony to centre - 17.1/2in. (44.5cm) wide, the cylinder 11in. (28cm)All teeth and tips present, plays smoothly
A rare early 3 air mandolin musical box by Francois Nicole, an unusual and high quality key wound Swiss musical box with a 26cms long cylinder, with rigid notation markings and fine teeth (approx 219), with named levers on one side of the box and winding hole, and with a small lever on the other side which releases the mechanism. With a retailers plaque inside for 'Ruegger, Place De Bel-Air, A Geneve' and also one to the lid, and with a number to the base (serial number, 5747), in a fruitwood case with brass recessed handles and with it's winding handle. Plays part of the overture of La Gazza Ladra by Rossini. Case 40cms across *According to Roy Ison's research, it is believed that all early musical boxes with rigid notation lines on the cylinder were made by Francois Nicole. There are three known Nicole boxes with Ruegger plaques, with this being the fourth. The Serial Number #5747 dates the box to circa 1826/27, shortly before the time when François Nicole began to stamp his name on the combs. The grid markings, as on the cylinder of #5747, became referred to as “rigid notationâ€; it bespeaks an early movement by François Nicole, the only maker known to have used it; in such, the cylinder is scored with both circumferential & lateral lines to give a grid that helped the pinners judge where the pin pricks were to be made prior to drilling. Tooling improvements later obviated the need for such markings. My thanks to the Musical Box Society of Great Britain for their help in providing these details and confirming that this is made by Francois Nicole, This has passed through the family from a relation connected to the Luttrell family of Dunster Castle, they were believed to have travelled widely through Europe in the 19thc and it's possible it was acquired at that time. *To listen to the music box playing, please contact Lawrences and we will send a link. *CR The mechanism is working and the teeth and tips seem fine generally and intact, the fly wheel is quite noisy sometimes as it moves around and needs some attention (due to lack of servicing), a little discolouration/rust spots to the comb in places which could do with a little clean, I don't think this has been serviced for some time and needs a good thorough service by a specialist.. Case, the escutcheon plate is loose inside and needs re fixing into place.
A crank wound Swiss (Bells insight) cylinder music box, late 19th century, probably playing 8 airs, (air sheet) missing) on three bells with a distinctive gilt dove hammer, in an amboyna and tulipwood banded case. on bracket feet. 46 cm x 26 cm x 20 cm high The collection of the late Robert HicksonRobert was a noted London antique dealer for over 40 years. Robert started in the Silver departments in Garrards in London at the age of 15 and by the age of 20 he had risen to manage Brompton Gallery in Knightsbridge. Robert had a long and successful career within the antique trade and had a particular passion for Silver and antique Eccentricities, his passion and connoisseurship are reflected in his collection. The case is in good structural order but does have the usual slight bowing of the cover and some elements of minor veneer chips but on the whole, the damage is purely cosmetic., note: no cabinet key is present or paper Air sheet. The movement winds on the crank with moderate resistance, the cylinder runs with a little reluctance, I think a clean and re-oil would probably helpPlease note the box on investigation plays 8 Airs NOT 10 AirsThe Air indicator seems to index the corresponding tunes and all of the hammers seem to coordinate as expected, the comb has the 19th tooth tip from the left hand side missing, also the first tooth on the left seems to be a repair, and the movement has some slight surface corrosion and is evident below the silvering of the register of airs but this is again cosmetic. The above information is of course a guide because any mechanical device of this age will have slight faults and problems, but I have tried to cover them in my condition report.
In the manner of Peter White; a 50 calibre Kentucky flintlock rifle (reproduction), the stock with high comb and inlaid wadding compartment to the butt, the barrel and action with indistinct markings, the stock with carved details. 123 cm long A private collection.Buyers must be aware of their country’s shipping and import policies regarding guns, knives, swords, and other offensive weapons prior to purchase. They are required to ensure that the lot can be delivered by a specialist shipper, whether in the UK, Europe or internationally. Good order. The mechanism cocks to both positions and releases on the trigger expected. , it doesn't appear to have been deactivated and the rifling is evident but I can not see very far into the barrel. The stocking is in good order. Please see extra supporting images supplied.Update, having sought advice and investigated further it appears that the weapon may have been restocked and the action and barrel are antique, this is further backed up by the label that was applied by the police firearms unit on their inspection deeming the weapon antique. The stocks had a rather crude scarf joint on the fore-end this would further point to the restocking of this weapon.
A Swiss lever wound cylinder music box, probably by George Baker of Geneva, late 19th century (generic) probably playing eight airs, (airs sheet missing) in an ebonised and simulated rosewood case. 43 cm x 21 cm x 14v cm high The collection of the late Robert HicksonRobert was a noted London antique dealer for over 40 years. The mechanism winds and works without hesitation on the lever, it correspondingly stops at the end of the cycle when the lever is set to stop. The comb is intact and I can not see any missing teeth or toothtipsThe cover is as usual slightly cupped or bowed horizontally but does not impede the closing of the lid. The case is a little bumped and scratched due to its age and weight.Cosmetically this item could do with some remedial work but mechanically it functions as expected. As in any old mechanical items, some adjustment or work should be expected.
A Swiss cylinder music box by Paillard C1870s, probably playing eight airs, (airs sheet missing) the cover inlaid with musical trophies.58 cm wide x 22 cm deep The collection of the late Robert HicksonRobert was a noted London antique dealer for over 40 years. The mechanism has no missing teeth from the comb and runs with a little encouragement but once running does not hesitate or falter until stopped. The case has had different hinges and the shortfall in the size of the more recent hinges has been filled with dark wax, this could be remedied with some minor workAs is common in these music boxes the cover has a slight horizontal cup this does not impede its closing. The case is a little cosmetically tired but structurally sound, the movement seems to work well but needs encouragement to start, maybe an oiled/gummed-up regulator as moving this slightly is enough to start the movement.
