An antique Welsh primitive comb back elbow chair, with bowed top rail with four spindles supporting, solid seat and raised on angled legs. Height to top of back 91 cm, width across arms 71 cm, height to top of seat 35 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally very sound. The top rail is in good order as are the four spindles beneath. The back rail has a very old spliced repair around the third from the right spindle. All spindles beneath are in good order. The seat is in good condition. The legs are all structurally sound. The rear legs have been crudely tipped. We think that the majority of the spindles are original although some appear slightly less crude than others and in particular the top left spindle, the one immediately below it and the second from the left. The legs appear to be original however it is very difficult to tell. The chair has a good provenance in that it has come from the estate of a local collector. There are 400 lots in this sale from the same property.

Lot 1220

An antique Welsh primitive comb back elbow chair, with triangular top rail to tapering back with spindled supports, solid seat and raised on turned legs. Height to top of back 105 cm, width across arms 56 cm, height to top of seat 39 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This chair is late 18th/early 19th century. The chair seems very original with no significant replacement parts. The top rail is in good order. All spindles are in generally good condition with the exception of the left hand spindle which has an old crack to the bottom left hand corner. Again this is not in our opinion significant. The arm hoop is in good order with numerous old nail holes. The front right hand corner of the arm has a spliced repair. The seat is in generally good condition. The legs appear to be original and are structurally sound. We are not sure what the holes in the legs are for. They may have at some point been front to back stretchers which are no longer present. The chair is structurally fairly sound with only slight movement at some of the joints. The chair has been consigned for sale with approximately 400 lots of early furniture and Treen all from one estate.

Lot 1219

An antique Welsh primitive comb back elbow chair, with bowed top rail to rectangular back with spindled supports, solid seat and turned legs. Height to top of back 98 cm, width across arms 59 cm, height to top of seat 40 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The top rail appears to be original. There is no movement at the joints. There is an old pegged repair to the top right hand corner. The right hand spindle has a crack at the bottom edge. The lower spindles appear to be original as far as we can tell. The arms are in generally good condition and are structurally sound. There is an old repair across the back of one arm but this is structurally very sound. The seat is in good condition with no significant cracking. Both arms have been repegged to the seat frame. The legs certainly have age but we are not certain that the legs and stretchers are original. It is very difficult to tell. They all look a little fresh particularly at the very bottom.
