An Avignon sedan chair, possibly by Guignet, circa 1750: painted in an elegant grey flowered arabesque design, lined with green silk damask with a green comb catisane fringe and a single remaining side iron curtain rail and tie backs, quarter glass windows in the Italian shape, twin blank armorials with bases and supports to front door and upper rear panel, with a Marquis' coronet above, the upper side panels with mirrored initials JG or IG in blue cartouche with ornamented supports and coronet above, three small grisaille cartouche paintings representing a goddess in the Mediterranean sea with gilt surrounds, 173cm high x 93cm wide x 81cm deep CONDITION REPORT: Leather roof damaged and some leather panels removed and loose - scuffed and dry. Cracks to joints. Signs of old woodwork to mouldings and exposed wood elements of the interior. Restoration to gilding and leather panels. Painted leather panelled later restored in part. Cracks to leather panelling to lower sections of the chair. Some imitation of the leather pattern of the panelling restored with painted sections. Front drop down window stiff but side windows functional with later glass panels. Coat of arms to back worn and scuffed as pictured. Door handle detached but present. Some moulding replaced and restored not gilded. Damask lining to the interior with wear, damage and generally dry and with tears, loose threads and losses. Tasselled fringes dry and fragile. Gilding restored in part with gold paint. Paint chipping to scattered areas, in particular the lower back panel as pictured. Underside not inspected.
