A MID-17TH CENTURY NORTH EUROPEAN HARQUEBUSIER'S LOBSTER TAILED POT OR HELMET, the two-piece skull with shallow turned comb, the pivoting pointed peak with turned edge and three-bar face-guard, the single-piece peaked neck of three-simulated lames and with turned edge, pierced with a single hole. Some pitting and lamination, holed through in a small area.
A GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE CIRCA 1625, 80cm sighted octagonal slightly swamped barrel with engraved line of sight and traces of maker's stamp to the breech, plain flat lock, sliding pan cover with button release, figured fruitwood full stock, the fore-end profusely inlaid with a bordered frieze in horn with dogs, deer, stags, and hare, the sideplate area similarly inlaid but with the addition of a hunter with shouldered wheel-lock rifle, the cheek piece decorated with engraved horn plaques depicting a wooded glade with a boar being brought down by dogs and approached by three hunters, one with shouldered wheel-lock rifle, the second on horseback with boar spear, and the third on foot again with boar spear, and signed by the stock maker RL, the remainder of the stock profusely inlaid with scrolling vines and ball decoration, further applied throughout with deer, dogs, hares and stags, the barrel tang area and comb decorated with engraved horn plaques depicting stylised figures of the Green Man and a gentleman in period costume, sliding patch-box cover, horn butt-plate, iron trigger guard with set trigger, engraved horn ramrod pipes and fore-end cap, replacement horn tipped ramrod. Some replacement inlays.The stockers mark RL is possibly that listed on p.778 of Stockel and referred to as being circa 1625.
