Ronald Gray NEAC (1868–1951) 'Tea in the Studio' signed and titled on artist's original label to the reverse with address of '15 Avenue Studios, 76 Fulham Road' oil on canvas 70 x 90cm Provenance: The Fine Art Society Exhibited: British Empire Exhibition, 1925 New English Art Club, 1947 It is likely that this work depicts a scene within an artist's studio at 76 Fulham Road, perhaps Ronald Gray's own, and probable that the figure holding the palette is Gray himself. The Avenue Studios consisted of a number artists' and sculptors' studios in use from the late 19th century which continued to be used for their original purpose until the 1980s. The two paintings hanging within the present picture can be identified as 'My Mother', 1908, by Ronald Gray and 'Oreads' by Annie Louisa Swynnerton. 'Oreads' was purchased by John Singer Sargent, who himself had a Fulham Road studio, as did Swynnerton. Both works are now in Tate Britain (N04098 and N03619). The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support. The painting is unlined and the canvas tension is slightly slack with a few minor undulations, but generally in plane. The paint layers are in a very good condition overall. In localised areas drying cracks have formed revealing the lighter ground layer below. The varnish is yellowed and a little patchy and uneven but generally acceptable.90 x 111cm framed

A George III-style mahogany hanging cupboard, 20th century, but incorporating some earlier elements, with a pair of louvred doors enclosing shelves, converted from a window screen,95cm wide20cm deep76cm highLiterature: C Davidson, 'The World of Mary Ellen Best', London, 1985, p.27 pl.25.This cabinet incorporates the two panels of a Georgian window screen, which features in a watercolour of the 1830s by Mary Ellen Best, entitled ‘Mrs Duffin’s dining room York’. A relatively unknown artist, a number of watercolours by Mary Ellen Best were discovered in 1983, and Caroline Davidson credits her as having a ‘not only a remarkable talent but also a passion for depicting in great detail the places, particularly the interiors of buildings, and the people whom she knew well'. Davidson makes particular reference to the screen, saying that ‘the slatted green silk shade at the bottom of the window, to prevent people looking in from the street, is an unusual detail: such minor, ephemeral furnishings do not usually survive'.Condition ReportGeneral knocks and surface wear throughout commensurate with age and use, particularly to the earlier louvred panels. Evidence of a lighter green paint beneath, indicating that they may have been repainted. The louvre action of panels generally functioning well. Some tarnish and discolouration to brass. Some scratches to timber around the lock. Overall structurally stable and in fairly good cosmetic condition. Ready for use. Please see photos
