A pair of unusual 1920s possibly Austrian oak hall chairs, each having single opposing arm rest, circular slat backs and rounded panelled seats, w.60cm. We only suggest Austrian, they could equally be Czech or Hungarian etc.Reasonably structurally sound, although there is some play when handled.Lacquered surface patina is worn to arms and extremities (patina is also lighter in these areas).Dowelled areas a little crudely finished.Timber is knotted in places, mostly to panelled seats.Height to seat is 45cm.Depth of chairs 36.5cm.Overall a little crude and provincial, rather than bespoke craftsman made.

WILLIAM MARSHALL BROWN RSA, RSW (SCOTTISH 1863-1936) POTATO LIFTING Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1892, 20.5 x 25.5cm (8 x 10") Condition Report: On close inspection there is light cracking in the pigment over most of the canvas surface, excluding the immediate foreground, being more noticeable over the lighter area of the sky. There is a tiny spec of paint loss located in the top left hand quarter section.
•ROBERT RUSSELL MACNEE GI (SCOTTISH 1880-1952) COTTAGES, HENS AND FIGURES ON A COUNTRY TRACK Oil on canvas, signed, 35.5 x 46cm (14 x 18") Condition Report: On close inspection there are a number of small brown dot marks noticeable over the lighter area of the sky and one slightly larger one located lower middle in the left hand section. These appear to be due to discolouration in the varnish. Overall the painting is in good condition with no significant issues.
§ Keith Vaughan (British, 1912-1977) Grey Shore Seascape, 1950 oil on hessian laid on board 25 x 34cm (10 x 13in) Literature: Anthony Hepworth and Ian Massey, 'Keith Vaughan, The Mature Oils 1946-1977', Sansom & Company, Bristol, 2012, p. 64, cat.no.AH89 (This catalogue entry states that the painting is signed 'Vaughan') Philip Vann and Gerard Hastings, 'Keith Vaughan', Lund Humphries in association with Osborne Samuel, Surrey, 2012, p.45, ill.39 Other Notes: On the 6th February 1940, Vaughan wrote in his journal: 'There was a mill built against a side water of the creek with a stream piling up against a lock and bursting through into the afternoon. Men loaded something into a large barge, hurriedly…The tide was out, the water had drained off the mud into the single ribbons. It was indescribable as taste, the soft and subtle modulations of colour, amorphous grey mud and red iron and the roots of wood and stumps of broken brickwork and concrete, the hulks of boats with their tarred backs and the sun bleaching and rotting the paintwork'. (Taken from Philip Vann and Gerard Hastings, 'Keith Vaughan', Lund Humphries in association with Osborne Samuel, Surrey, 2012, pp.44-45). The spot mentioned in Vaughan's journal was near to Pagham, West Sussex, where Vaughan's friend and lover, Harold Colebrook's aunt, owned a converted railway carriage. They would spend holidays there between 1935 and 1939, often accompanied by friends. The image must have had a profound impact on Vaughan as he produced numerous paintings of the subject including 'Fishermen and Bathers' (1951), (private collection) and 'Grey Shore with Boat' (Bonhams, London, June 13 2008, lot 4). The gritty appearance of the beach appears to have been achieved by the artist mixing material into the paint, probably sand. At the lower left corner there is a diagonal scratch running through the seated figure. Under ultraviolet light this area appears very dark, suggesting it has been retouched. The area of the beach has been repainted, this appears to cover a lighter green colour which has been varnished. It seems likely that the reworking has been carried out by the artist rather than a later restoration, the legs of the small figure in front of a building at the top of the work appears to be applied over the top. There is also a very minor incision to the board in the top left corner.
•LAURENCE STEPHEN LOWRY (1887-1976) 'The Fever Van' signed in pen to the margin lower right, Fine Art Trade Guild blindstamp lower left equating to 478, limited edition offset lithograph from the edition of 700 printed in 1972 by Mainstone Publications, the image 41.5cm x 51.5cm The fever van was the colloquial term in the north of England for the ambulance that transported patients with infectious diseases, usually scarlet fever or diphtheria, to the local isolation or infectious diseases hospital. These vehicles were in existence throughout the country from around 1910 to the 1950s and had various nicknames Condition Report: Work has an overall discolouration as evident by a lighter band to lower margin

A pair of 19th century Chinese hardwood jardiniere stands, each with rouge marble top. Diameter 39 cm, height 92 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The jardiniere stands are very much a pair. One top is ever so slightly lighter than the other and the grain can be seen whereas the other is much darker and the grain is more difficult to determine. One section of the carved apron on each of the jardinieres has had some overpainting which has left it looking very sticky and glossy, whereas the other panels are a nice muted natural colour. One jardiniere has a small piece of leaf missing leaving the natural wood showing. On this same piece there is some overpainting to one of the corner brackets. Regardless, these remain an attractive pair.
A George III mahogany dining table, with centre drop leaf section and two D ends all raised on tapered legs of square section terminating in spade feet. Width 135 cm, length fully extended 332 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The table is in generally good original untouched, unrestored condition. The top is flat and not warped. There are no significant losses to the table top and no missing pieces of mahogany at the leaf extremities. The colour of the top it is fairly uniform, the D ends perhaps a little lighter in colour. The polish to the top is original and the colour is good. The recessed frieze and all legs are in less good condition than the table top. The polish is dry in places and beginning to perish. The D end legs all appear to be in good structural order with no significant damage or repairs. You will note that the spade feet are quite minimal in design. If you compare these to the spade feet on the centre drop leaf section you will see that these are larger and they appear to have been tipped. The wooden gates that support the drop leaves have all been replaced at some point and the recessed frieze on the centre section has veneer losses and moulding losses. The width between the legs of the D ends is 52.5 cm at the centre and just under 54 cm at the sides. The width at the side between the gates is just over 54 cm with the table folded. We do have four clips. The table does fit together when the drop leaves are down. The clips are however very tight.

A PAIR OF RUSKIN A9 SHAPED VASES, with a matt blue glaze over a gloss orange, impressed Ruskin England 1927 to the base, height approximately 24cm (condition: no signs of restoration or repair, both vases have small splashes of white paint which should come off, there are a few surface scratches to both the matt and gloss glazes, the very bottom edge of the lighter bottomed one has a tiny depression in the gloss glaze, like a chip but more likely a fault or burst air bubble, the darker orange bottomed vase has a similar fault in the same area which is slightly larger)
