Architectural: A pair of important carved Rosso Verona marble baths from La Suvera, Siena, country villa of Pope Julius II and latterly the Ricci family, Italian Renaissance, 16th century, of tapering form with drilled drainage hole, 74cm high by 172cm longProvenance: Removed from La Suvera, the country villa of Pope Julius II. Pope Julius II born Giuliano della Rovere; (1443 -1513) was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 1503 to his death in 1513. Nicknamed the Warrior Pope or the Fearsome Pope, he chose his papal name not in honour of Pope Julius Ibut in emulation of Julius Caesar. One of the most powerful and influential popes, Julius II was a central figure of the High Renaissance and left a significant cultural and political legacy. As a result of his policies during the Italian Wars, the Papal States remained independent and centralised, and the office of the papacy continued to be crucial, diplomatically and politically, during the entirety of the 16th century in Italy and Europe. In 1506, Julius II established the Vatican Museums and initiated the rebuilding of the St. Peter’s Basilica. The same year he organized the famous Swiss Guards for his personal protection and commanded a successful campaign in Romagna against local lords. In 1508, he commissioned the Raphael Rooms and Michelangelo’s paintings in the Sistine Chapel. Julius II was described by Machiavelli in his works as an ideal prince. Pope Julius II allowed people seeking indulgences to donate money to the Church which would be used for the construction of Saint Peter’s Basilica. After Pope Julius acquired La Suvera in 1508, the name deriving from the French word “Souveraine”, meaning Sovereign, he entrusted the famous Siennese architect and genius Petruzzi with the task of mitigating the severe Medieval style of the ancient fortress with sumptuous Renaissance taste. Petruzzi refined the building, joining the two original towers by means of a transept. The addition of a double portico and loggia completed his work, turning it into an imposing Renaissance villa.La Suvera was not simply one of the personal properties of the Pope, it was also the place Julius II retired to every now and again for a little rest far from Rome. La Suvera passed down the line from Julius II to his descendants, the Della Rovere family. From Julius’ nephew, Niccolò della Rovere, it then returned to the Sienna banking family, the Chigis. Marriage, inheritance, and acquisition caused it to pass through the hands of a number of prestigious Siennese and Roman families until it reached the current owners, the Marquises Ricci, whose family had already owned La Suvera in 1123. In recent times Marquis Giuseppe Ricci Paracciani and his wife Princess Eleonora Massimo adapted La Suvera into a Relais where guests could enjoy the sumptuous state rooms and extensive gardens. Following the closure of the Relais, the villa is now for sale. These baths, which are of typically tapering form with a drainage hole, would originally have been incorporated into the villa before being moved to one of the courtyard gardens and planted out with flowers, probably sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century with the advent of modern plumbing and copper or cast iron baths. Although Rosso Verona marble is normally a deep pink in colour, over the centuries it mellows and becomes a lighter yellowy pink as in these baths which is a good indication that these date to the Renaissance period or shortly thereafter.
Garden pots and urns: A pair of Pulham stoneware urns, late 19th century, stamped Pulham’s terracotta Broxbourne, 61cm highPart of the Irish Collection of Garden Statuary and Ornament, see lot 35 for further informationThe Pulham company was established in 1820 but made terracotta from around 1846 on into the 20th century, with workshops in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. By the 1880’s the company was concentrating on garden and landscape ornaments. A catalogue of 1915, indicates that their wares were made of “Pulhamite” stone, which, is considered the best material for all designed stonework in connection with the garden for the following reasons: Pulhamite stone is more durable than natural stone, for it never decays and never shells or flakes, cement is not used in its composition, it is a lighter substance, making more elegant productions than any other so called artificial stone. This is an important point, as the sides of a Pulhamite vase give more space for soil. It is the colour of light stone. There is nothing deleterious to plant life in it, in fact, owing to the nature of the material, the opposite may be said in its favour. We guarantee its durability, and can refer to work which has been exposed for 70 years. If desired we can reproduce in the antique style, and copies can be made from practically any existing examples. The company held appointments to H.M. King Edward VII, H.M. King George V and H.M. Queen Alexandria.

2001 Mercedes-Benz S320 L Transmission: automatic Mileage: 21000The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a luxury saloon and was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116 S-Class which succeeded previous Mercedes-Benz models dating back to the mid 1950s. As the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz line-up, the S-Class has debuted many of the company's latest innovations, including drivetrain technologies, interior features, and safety systems such as seatbelt pretensioners. The W220 S-Class was completely restyled in 1999 with a body that was slightly smaller and lighter than its predecessor. Production of the W220 S-Class totalled 485,000 units; slightly more than the production totals of its predecessor. As with each new S-Class, the W220 brought in new innovations such as Airmatic air suspension and Active Ventilated Seats which used miniature fans in the seats to move air through perforations. Mercedes-Benz traditionally introduced its safety innovations in the S-Class; for instance, the model was the first car in Europe to incorporate airbags. S-Class safety features included innovations in active safety (accident avoidance) including ABS braking in 1978, traction control and Electronic Stability Program (ESP). Passive safety features included crumple zones in 1957, three-point seatbelts in 1965, collapsible steering column and strengthened occupant cell, resulting in better protection during heavy impacts. This absolutely superb example was delivered new to the late Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad Al-Thani and is in exemplary condition throughout. It is presented in Obsidian Black with grey leather interior and is left hand drive. Its smooth V6 3.2 litre engine has had a gentle life, only covering a mere 21,000 kms of chauffeured driving! It is laden with all the usual Mercedes-Benz luxuries such as electric seats, walnut wood, centrally mounted analogue television in the rear (currently disconnected), climate control and air conditioning. This fabulous example wants for nothing and comes with a letter of provenance, a V5C registration document, service book (in German) and an owner’s manual. With two owners from new, interesting history and in amazing condition, this is surely one of the finest S Class Mercedes-Benz on the market today.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. T. Loo. Dubosc promoted Ming and Qing literati painting by organising exhibitions and selling works to Western museums.Of elegant proportions and form, the present tables would most likely have been used as side tables in a scholar's studio to support art objects of considerable weight, such as a scholar's rock, an incense burner or a table screen. The origin of side tables fitted with a shelf is unknown. However, the 'Portrait of Wang Xizhi', a painting dating to the Song dynasty (960-1279) depicts the central figure seated next to a side table similar to the present example, set with scholarly objects. This painting almost certainly inspired an 18th century portrait depicting the Qianlong Emperor appreciating antiquities, depicted in a very similar guise as the Song counterpart, beside a rectangular side table fitted with a shelf displaying an archaic bronze vessel and a table screen; see Chu-Pak Lau, Classical Chinese Furniture from the Haven Collection, Hong Kong, 2016, p.208. Giant's-arm braces, a feature introduced during the Ming dynasty, provided additional support on the underside of the table. Their use eliminated the need for the more commonly seen 'humpback' stretchers. The strength of this joint allows the table to be supported without stretchers, thereby creating a lighter and more elegant form. This device may have originated during the Warring States period (475-221 BC) to fasten bronze fittings; see Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, vol.1, Hong Kong, 1990, pp.121-122. Compare with a related pair of corner-leg tables with shelf, mid 17th/18th century, illustrated by Chu-Pak Lau, Classical Chinese Furniture from the Haven Collection, Hong Kong, 2016, p.209, no.49.
