Walter Frederick Osborne RHA ROI (1859-1903)Beached Rowing Boat and Figures by the ShoreOil on board, 25 x 21cm (9¾ x 8¼'')Provenance: Sale, Adam's, 16 June 1993, Lot 69, where purchased by the late Gillian Bowler.Walter Osborne’s picture depicts a sloping, high river bank upon which small rowing boats are moored. Just over the brow is a large pavilion-like building with steep roof, tall chimneys and masts. On the left, a figure in hat and white smock stands silhouetted against the sky, while in the right foreground another man in white sits in his boat, moored below the steps which climb the banks. The smooth water below reflects the boat and river bank, complementing the dark shape of the building above. Osborne’s scene is viewed against the light, so the tone of the picture is subdued. Yet a quiet sense of mystery is evoked, the two men conversing with one another perhaps, or lost in their own thoughts. Osborne’s scene has echoes of small, intimate pictures of heath or quarries by earlier landscapists such as John Crome and William Mulready.Osborne spent much of the period 1884 to c.1891 painting in English villages and coastal towns in the summer months. The setting of the present picture is probably at Rye in East Sussex.Rye had been an old fortified town on the river Rother on the Sussex coast and became one of the ‘Cinque ports’. But in the 16th century the harbour began to silt up, so that the town became situated two miles inland. The Flemish portraitist Anthony Van Dyck painted beautiful watercolours there c.1633. Osborne was working in Rye c.1889-1890, and was inspired to paint some of his finest paintings there. These include ‘Cherry Ripe’, c.1889 (Ulster Museum); ‘The Ferry’; ‘When the Boats Come In’; small oil studies such as ‘On the Quay at Rye, 1889 and the present picture; and the wash painting ‘Boats in Rye Harbour’ (National Gallery of Ireland); and he also took photographs there (NGI).English villages provided Osborne with interesting subject matter and also inspired a new palette in his paintings, the warm russets, oranges and maroon colours of brickwork and roof tiles, the browns of old woodwork, often being lit up by lovely sunlight. In the present scene, which is observed against the light, the tones, dark maroons, plum colours, raw siennas (lighter at the top of the bank) and dark blues, are more subdued. But the sky is bright, covered by light cloud and with touches of blue sky breaking through. Osborne’s brushwork is light but expressive. On the riverbank, for example, changes in direction are visible as his brush moves quickly over the picture surface, while in the clouds fluid, horizontal brush marks can be seen, creating blurred edges where the building meets the sky.Osborne’s painting belonged in the collection of Gillian Bowler, founder of Budget Travel. A very similar subject was exhibited at the Dublin Art Club in 1890.Julian Campbell, April 20181) ‘The Ferry’, Important Irish Art, de Vere’s, Dublin, 27th November 2013, Lot 39.2) ‘When the Boats Come In’, 19th Century European, Victorian and British Impressionist Art, Bonhams, London, 1st March 2017, Lot 62.3) ‘On the Quay at Rye’, 1889, Irish Sale, Sotheby’s, London, 18th May 2001, Lot 165 - this was a gift from Osborne to fellow painter Blandford Fletcher.

Paul Henry RHA (1876-1958) WESTERN SKIES, c.1919 oil on canvas signed lower left 20 by 24in. (50.8 by 61cm) Collection of Maurice Solomon, acquired directly from the artist, c.1950; deVere's, 13 March 1990, lot 40; with the Oriel Gallery, Dublin; Private collection; Gorry Gallery, Dublin, 2003; Private collection; Taylor Galleries, Belfast, 2006; Private collection 'Paintings by Mr. & Mrs. Paul Henry', Magee's Gallery, Belfast, from 14 April 1919; 'Pictures by Paul & Grace Henry', Mill's Hall, Dublin, 12-24 May 1919; 'Exhibition of Paintings by Paul Henry and Frank McKelvey', Oriel Gallery, Dublin, 11 December 1990 to 26 January 1991, catalogue no. 32 (illustrated); 'Exhibition of 18th, 19th and 20th Century Irish Paintings', Gorry Gallery, Dublin, 2-12 March 2005, catalogue no. 41 (illustrated) Kennedy, S.B. Dr., Paul Henry: with a Catalogue of the Paintings, Drawings and Illustrations, New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2007, p.209, catalogue no. 526 (illustrated) The composition, typography, handling of the paint and the general mood established in Western Skies is similar to that in a number of other pictures by Paul Henry, such as An Antrim Bog, 1919 (SB Kennedy catalogue no. 525), A Western Landscape, c.1919 (no. 527) and The Bog Cutting, c.1919 (no. 528). An Antrim Bog is known to have been painted in the spring of 1919 when Paul Henry and his wife, Grace, visited Cushendun in County Antrim, so it seems likely that Western Skies also dates from around that time and that the setting is also County Antrim. If that is the case, then the precise location is almost certainly a stretch of bogland situated near Glarryford and close to the present A26 main road, an area famed for pine trees that form a sort of arch way over the road. The narrow strip of land at the bottom of the picture plane is common to all these pictures, as is the flat terrain and the band of purple hills in the distance that halts the eye's recession. In each case, too, the landscape is sodden and is further threatened with rain - indeed in Western Skies rain already intrudes - from the menacing cumulous clouds. The range of colours is restrained in each picture, although Western Skies is lighter in mood than is the case in the other compositions. Dr S.B. Kennedy

JESUS CARRIES HIS CROSS and JESUS FALLS FOR THE FIRST TIME, 1927 pencil and watercolour; (2)14 x 8 in. Literature:Nicola Gordon Bowe, Harry Clarke, The Life of Work, History Press Ireland, Dublin, 2012, pp. 266-267 (Jesus Falls for the First Time, illustrated) Two full scale designs for the second and third Stations of the Cross inset panels in pencil and watercolour dating to 1927 for the Basilica at St. Patrick's Purgatory, Lough Derg. This commission was the largest of Clarke's church commissions at this time, others included a three-light window for the Catholic church at Tullycross, Co. Galway, a two-light at Killaloe, a three-light ordered by Colthursts for Blarney, Co. Cork and three windows for St. Patrick's College, Thurles. The commission - for Professor William Scott's new basilica in Lough Derg - comprised a series of Stations conceived as small oval panels leaded into a scheme of fourteen windows depicting The Apostles, St. Paul and Jesus. Clarke sent pencil designs and three full-scale colour studies of the inset Stations of the Cross panels in these to his patron, Canon Keown in February 1927. Two years later, in June, The Lough Derg Windows were consecrated to great acclaim. Alice Curtayne (1898-1981) the author and lecturer referred to them thus in her text Lough Derg (Dublin 1944): In St Patrick's Basilica on Station Island, Lough Derg, the Station of the Cross are set up in a very distinctive manner… Each of these fourteen … holds up a Station, which is shown on an inset plaque of lighter glass, more delicately coloured, so that it stands out in bold relief from the window. In this way it is the Station chiefly which holds the attention, while the attendant Apostle seems to hover attentively in the background. Total Extravagance!: A Fine and Elaborately Gilded and Silvered, Carved and Pierced Ivory Fan. circa 1780's, the monture has a wealth of features, many picked out in gold, many more subtle. The guards are elaborately carved and gilded, the monture serving as a playground for numerous gilded cherubs who climb up and down and perch on the delicately pierced gorge sticks, themselves a marvel of intricate carving and piercing in numerous fine designs. The double silk leaf is no less of a designer's triumph, with a trompe l'oeil border encircling three vignettes, containing sequins of different forms in gold, lime green and cerise. The central scene is finely and colourfully painted with a wealthy couple with their young son inside a park, the couple seated on a bench, the child chasing a white dove. The lady is sumptuously dressed in lilac, her wide skirts probably supported with paniered petticoats, her tiny waist drawn in with corsets, a large hat with several drooping plumes, her sleeves and fischu, edged with lace. The gentleman is equally richly attired, with a blue jacket and double breasted striped waistcoat, and yellow breeches, his wig with trailing pigtail, his arms around his lady as she leans towards two white doves which she retains on a leash. The child is dressed in a red suit with short jacket and matching breeches, a large straw hat with plumes balancing on his curls. The side vignettes feature a basket overflowing with recently gathered flowers, and a musical score and stringed instrument. The reserves are painted with flowers and gold highlights and feature more sequin decoration. The verso is painted with deep autumn coloured leaves and three sprays of pink roses and green leaves, coinciding with the reverse of the three vignettes on the recto. Guard length 28cm. Together with an attractive fan box made from two tones of wood, the lighter tone used for entwined initials and flowersRestoration to many folds on the verso. Possible repair to one guard.

Lot 95

An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the guards painted in a pale sea green, with chinoiserie detail in brown and gold. The gorge is also painted in slightly lighter shades, a water scene with boat, a house on stilts, and rocks. The vellum leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, is painted with people at leisure in a garden, a further figure watching from a stone summer house. One gentleman plays a stringed instrument, a couple dance, a white dog with black markings listens, and the central lady dressed formally in a pink sack back robe, chats with her friends. The verso, with a simple meandering flower border, depicts a tree. Guard length 27cmThe leaf has either been slightly affected by humidity, or the slight crumpling is a result of many repairs to the folds on the verso. The folds are quite rubbed.
