Four various Zulu Knobkerrie collected by Lieutenant-Colonel Gawne, the first with two-tone hard wood spherical head, the haft with braided wire covering just beneath the head, swollen or flared foot, the second with shorter haft and wire binding at the midpoint, the third with smaller head, split, and longer lighter haft, the last with flattened, almost disc-shaped head, the haft with swollen or flared foot. By family tradition Lieutenant Colonel-Gawne was said to have acquired these spears during his service in the Zulu War of 1879 (Medal and clasp), however he did also serve on the Bechuanaland Expedition of 1884 and during the Boer War where he was wounded at Vryheid on the 11th of December 1900 and died of the following day, he was commanding the 2nd Bn the Royal Lancaster Regiment. A depiction of the moment of the Boer attack and the wounding of Gawne was depicted in the Graphic.
