ROBERT GIBBINGS (1889-1958) - 6 als. & a postcard, written to George Sutcliffe, owner of the London bookbinders, Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Gibbings, a leading wood-engraver of the period, had purchased the Golden Cockerel Press in 1924, and Sangorski's carried out much of the binding for the deservedly well-known private press. The letters written between 1934 & 1937, after the artist had sold up the Press, mostly concern books which he would like bound - specifications are given & estimates requested; the preferred style being a sharkskin spine & tappa (chinese mulberry bark) sides; whilst a lighter touch is sometimes present - 'when that last "Bill" of yours is met in November I'm damn well coming along for a drink . . . you can choose me a halo!' * written on either his Tresue, Maenporth, Falmouth, or the Orchard, Waltham Saint Lawrence headed notepaper; on a couple the recipient has made technical notes in pencil; sold with 2 other ms. items (written to Sutcliffe), including a Dennis Wheatley postcard.
