A 19th century amethyst riviere necklace, the twenty-nine graduated oval mixed cut amethysts all set in cut down collet mounts with closed back amethyst clasp, not stamped, 41cm long, weight approx 32.6gCondition report: Overall the stones are well matched in colour and saturation, however, three or four are a little lighter in colour. Claws are very worn and some stones slightly loose in the mounts, no obvious repairs/restorations, the largest stone has a hinge on the mount where a drop may have been attached. Richard Barrett Talbot Kelly MBE RI (1896-1971) Heron, monogrammed bottom right, ink and watercolour, measurements 28 x 37.5 cm, frame 48 x 56 cmProvenance: consigned from a significant private collection of wildlife artCondition report: This is a watercolour on paper, framed under glazing- not examined external to the frame. The sheet appears in good condition- no obvious evidence for any rips, creasing, folds or losses- the surface appears to be stable. The paint has some fading to the colours- a lighter outline is present around the edges from the previous mount- having been reframed and re-mounted by the present owner. There are no visible signs of paint loss. Frame has some gminor signs of general wear and tear- joints are solid.

The paper appears in good condition without evidence for any rips, creasing or folds, there is some general ageing (yellowing) of the paper which is evident at the bottom when the current vendor had the piece reframed- there is a lighter area next to the bottom edge of the new mount. The paint condition appears well preserved and stable, no visible evidence for any deterioration or paint loss. The mount and frame appear in good condition with solid joints.

The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The painting appears to have been partially cleaned with less varnish present in the areas of the sitter’s face. Damage has occurred to the sitter’s eyes which have been scored with losses at the centre that have been retouched. The hair has been reinforced with overpaint and there is overpaint in the background, mainly at the left hand side. The varnish in the background is very degraded and appears to have developed its own network of cracks, causing a crazed and matte surface. There are numerous dark spots and stains across the lighter areas. A thick layer of dust is present on both the front and reverse of the painting.

It has developed a network of age cracks which appear very prominent in the lighter paint passages. The varnish is very degraded and appears to have developed its own network of cracks, causing a crazed and matte surface in areas. The varnish is very yellowed and not longer adequately saturating the paint in the background. There is a layer of dust and dirt on both the front and reverse of the painting.

There are areas of overpaint covering drying cracks. The varnish is dull but even. There is a thick layer of dust across the surface and a few light, matte spots, possibly mould.

The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layer is in a good, stable condition. There are some localised, textural issues relating to the drying of the paint layer including drying cracks in the lighter passages of the paintings. Areas of retouching, in the background and areas of flesh, are well matched to the original. The varnish is clear, even and glossy.

Two old horizontal tears in the canvas have been repaired through lining, these are located in the lower half including through the sitter’s little finger. The paint layer has developed drying cracks in the lighter paint passages, prominent in the sitter’s face where they have darkened. The paint layer is stable overall although there are a few localised areas of raised paint. The varnish is degraded and no longer adequately saturates the darker paint passages. The varnish is dull, matte and yellowed. It has been applied very thickly in areas causing tide lines on the background. There are numerous scuffs and areas of abrasion to the surface and a layer of dirt.

The board has developed a slight horizontal curvature and is in a good condition overall. The paint layer has developed a network of age cracks which appear dark in the lighter paint passages with slightly raised edges following the grain of the wood. There are a few scattered losses across the surface. In the background there are a few areas of overpaint. The varnish is slightly yellowed but glossy and even.
