Lot 403

Ca. 500-300 BC. A striking Chalcidian helmet made of hammered tinned bronze, with a sharply flaring neck-guard, a short slender nose guard running to broad arching eye openings; the brow shows two slender eyebrows. The articulated crescentic cheek pieces with contoured edges are attached with hinges; a hole for the attachment of a chin strap is visible on each cheek piece. Chalcidian helmets are named after similar helmets depicted on pottery vases from the Euboean city of Chalcis. This type of ancient Greek helmet was a lighter and less restrictive form of the Corinthian helmet. The hinged cheek pieces were anatomically formed to fit closely to the face and tended to curve upward towards the eye, where large circular openings provided a wider field of view than the Corinthian helmets. Excellent condition; custom-made stand included. For more information on Chalcidian helmets, see Everson, T. (2004). Warfare in Ancient Greece: arms and armor from the heroes of Homer to Alexander the Great. The History Press, 116-124.Size: L:360mm / W:210mm ; 1.12kgProvenance: Part of private London Arms & Armour collection; formerly in an old German collection formed since the 1980s.

Lot 471

Ca. 500-300 BC. A helmet comprising of hammered gilt bronze. The domed crown with front with medial ridge, with contoured double curve above the brow continuing as an occipital rib around the helmet, with pronounced arched brows and narrow flared neck guard. The crown domed with a mask-like front featuring eyes that have been carefully cut out. The round sections are each accentuated with a separately applied moulded bank. A tear-drop shaped nose guard is reaching down, moveable articulated crescentic cheeky guards with contoured edges are attached by hinges on the sides, rounded, and tapering towards the thin allowing binding. The Chalcidian-Type helmet started to replace the Corinthian-type helmet on the battlefield in the 5th century BC due to its restrictive attributes. The new versatile Chalcidian form of battle helmet enabled the owner to adapt on the battlefield. The Chalcidian helmet enabled greater sensory perception as the helmet was lighter and made in with senses in mind. By the time of the Peloponnesian War (434-402 BC) the Chalcidian helmet was the most widely distributed helmet in the Greek ranks. Good condition, heavily restored. Cf. 1968 BSA 500cc A50 Royal StarRegistration no. WGU 567FFrame no. A50 RB 2269Engine no. A50 RB 2269Following Triumph's lead, BSA turned to unitary construction for its range of twins as the 1960s dawned, launching the all-new 500cc A50 and 650cc A65 'Star' models in January 1962. When the range was revised for 1965, the touring twins were renamed 'Royal Star' (A50) and 'Thunderbolt' (A65) respectively. Although a little less powerful than the A65, the A50 was lighter in weight and smoother running than its bigger brother, to which, engine capacity excepted, it was otherwise identical. This UK model is finished in Lime Green as an attractive nod to its A7SS Shooting Star predecessor. The vendor advises us that this motorcycle was totally restored in 2015 in every respect mechanically and cosmetically, with all components refurbished or replaced. Close inspection will verify that every nut and bolt is not only new but also the right size, shape and thread. New components fitted include the chains, sprockets, controls, cables, internals, exhausts, Amal Concentric carburettor, and Smiths speedometer with under two miles on the odometer. The engine has standard-size big-ends, timing-side bush and plus 0.020' pistons. Stored in the owner's dehumidified private museum, this stunning BSA A50 represents a rare opportunity to own a rare and beautiful British classic. Accompanying documentation includes an old-style logbook; BSA OC dating certificate; a V5C Registration Certificate; and current MoT. Keys present.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Featured in the 1981 movie Chariots of Fire1923 Rudge 500cc Four-Speed Motorcycle CombinationRegistration no. PW 1216Frame no. 824804Engine no. 26969•Rudge sidecar•Present ownership since 2005•Restoration completed by 2006•Last used in September 2022This handsome Rudge combination was featured in Hugh Hudson's multiple Academy Award-winning 1981 movie Chariots of Fire (see image), and in 1985 won the 'Best Rudge' award at the VMCC International Assembly while owned by one G (George) Robinson (copy of results available). A letter on file from Bryan Reynolds of the Rudge Enthusiasts Club advises that this machine was assembled at the factory on 17th April 1923 and had gearbox number '218' (which it retains). The tank colour was described as Apple Green, which is a lighter shade than the famous Multi model's Olive Green. The current vendor purchased the Rudge in 2005 from a John Bell in Darlington. Mr Bell had acquired the Rudge from the aforementioned George Robinson, who owned a motorcycle shop in Darlington and had purchased the machine from Leicester. Prior to that, it is believed the Rudge was based in Norfolk (it has a Norwich registration). Purchased by our vendor as a 'basket case', the Rudge had been restored by the end of 2006. The vendor re-soldered the fuel tank himself, while the tank lining and 'Rudge' name were hand painted by a professional signwriter friend. Notable features include a Rudge single-seat sidecar with black leather upholstery (chassis number '3.1725'); Stewart speedometer; Klaxon 'Type ES' horn; Lucas 'King of the Road' acetylene headlamp and generator; Lucas sidecar lamp; BTH Magneto; and a Senspray carburettor. (It should also be noted that the engine runs on Castrol-R oil.) 'PW 1216' was ridden to Darlington town centre for the Vintage vehicle show in July 2022 and was last used in September 2022 at the Beamish Museum (the vendor visits the Northern Steam weekend at the Beamish Museum twice a year on the Rudge). The accompanying history file contains photographs of George Robinson and wife on the Rudge; with the current vendor at the Beamish Museum's Northern Steam weekend; and as seen in Chariots of Fire. Other documents include a current V5C; expired MoTs (most recent 2013); Rudge Enthusiasts Club invoices/receipts; some restoration photographs; and various copies of marque-related literature and technical notes.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1979 Suzuki GT200 X5 ProjectRegistration no. GDB 757VFrame no. GT-200 503967Engine no. GT200 - 104224By the late 1970s, Suzuki's long-running GT250 and GT185 were beginning to look rather long in the tooth, and in 1979 both were replaced with new models: the 250cc X7 and 200cc X5 respectively. The newcomers featured up-to-the-minute styling and were lighter and faster than their predecessors, and both featured reed-valve induction and cast alloy wheels. The X5 offered here appears to be an older restoration with some surface corrosion throughout; the side panels and seat unit loose, and the machine's condition and completeness are not known. Close inspection advised. The Suzuki was acquired by the elderly vendor in 1987. An expired MoT on file, issued in 1989 at 5,254 miles, suggests the machine has been unused since (the current odometer reading is 5,262 miles, unwarranted). According to the HPI check, this X5 was previously listed as 'Blue'. Offered with an old V5 document, this is a potentially most rewarding project that will require restoration to a greater or lesser extent and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Offered with a spare detached seat unit. Offered with keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Single owner, 1,194 kilometres from new1986 Suzuki GSX-R750 Registration no. D850 CDDFrame no. GR75A-111014Engine no. R705-125467Suzuki rewrote the 750-class rulebook when it launched the GSX-R750 on an unsuspecting world back in 1985. The GSX-R's development had been heavily influenced by lessons learned from the works TT F1 and Endurance racers of the late 1970s/early 1980s; lighter than a 600 and as powerful as a 1000, it made all other super-sports 750s seem flabby and slow. One of the modern era's few instant classics, the GSX-R750 was a huge commercial success for Suzuki and enjoys cult status today. Now more than 30 years old, many early GSX-Rs have suffered at the hands of successive owners, with anodised fastenings, tinted screens and after-market pipes among the commonest modifications, a state of affairs that has resulted in original examples of the first version – such as the machine offered here – becoming increasingly sought after. Delivered to Suzuki France, this early GSX-R750 was sold new to the current vendor by Two-Four Sports Ltd (from either Robert Furnell or Tom Wheatcroft). Used sparingly, the Suzuki has covered a mere 1,194 kilometres from new and will require recommissioning before further use. In 2009 this machine was displayed on the Suzuki GB stand at the NEC show on the 25th anniversary of the GSX-R, and in 2010 it featured in the April edition of Fast Bikes magazine. Representing a rare opportunity to acquire an original example of Suzuki's iconic 'Gixxer', the machine comes with two expired MoTs (1990s); a service invoice (1991); and a V5C document.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 406

1985 Honda NS400RRegistration no. C586 MRCFrame no. NC19-2001748Engine no. NC19E-2002165Multi-cylinder two-stroke Grand Prix race replicas were much in vogue during the mid-1980s, as first Yamaha and then Suzuki sought to exploit their links with the racetrack. Honda too were players in this niche market but somewhat surprisingly chose to make their GP look-alike a 400 rather than a 500 like those of their rivals. Despite giving away 100cc, the NS400R looked every bit as convincing as Yamaha's RD500LC and Suzuki's RG500 Gamma and had the advantage of being both lighter and more compact than either. Introduced for 1985, the NS400R boasted a three-cylinder engine just like Freddie Spencer's 1982 World Championship-winning NS500 while being notable as Honda's largest two-stroke roadster and its first with an aluminium frame. The NS400R was one of the best-handling roadsters of its day, Bike magazine declaring: 'there are few machines that will make up time on the NS400 through a series of bends'. An instant classic, the NS400R is one of the most sought after of 1980s sports bikes. A UK model first registered in August 1985, this fully restored example is finished in 'Freddie Spencer' livery and has recorded only 26,427 miles from new. The vendor advises us that the machine rides and runs superbly, and that it last ran in March 2023. Offered with a V5C document. Keys present.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 380

The Dave Degensc.1965 Dunstall 500cc Domiracer Replica Racing MotorcycleFrame no. noneEngine no. 82594 122P (Engine Card No. 88C 1233)•Built by Dave Degens as a replica of his 1960s Dunstall racer•Dresda Autos frame•Tuned Dominator engineFollowing the introduction of the race-proven Featherbed frame on its Dominator roadster for 1952, Norton began experimenting with a competition version for use in production-based AMA racing in the USA. Some creditable results were achieved in 1953 but it would be another eight years before the factory revived the notion of a racer based on the roadster twin. Development was supervised by Chief Engineer Doug Hele, who was convinced that the twin's advantages of a lighter, smoother and more compact engine would pay dividends if the unit was installed in a modified Featherbed frame. A new version of the latter was produced, 2.5' lower than that of the single-cylinder Manx and equipped with proportionately shortened Roadholder forks. Christened 'Domiracer', Hele's creation was entered in the 1961 Isle of Man Senior TT, though critics gave little for its chances when pitted against pukka racing machinery. Despite the general scepticism, Australian Tom Phillis brought the Domiracer home in a magnificent 3rd place behind the Manx Nortons of Mike Hailwood and Bob MacIntyre, lapping at 100.36mph in the process. This promising debut ought to have heralded the introduction of an over-the-counter version, but Norton decided to stick with the Manx and the Domiracer project was shelved. Following the AMC takeover and Norton's relocation to Woolwich in 1963, the bikes and spares were sold off to Reg Dearden and Paul Dunstall, the latter using the Domiracer to good effect as an ideal way of publicising his tuning and accessory business. In Grand Prix racing, Austrian Rudi Thalhammer built and rode his own Domiracer in the early 1960s with a measure of success, but these private efforts, although worthy, were very much less than the Domiracer deserved. A very close re-creation of the machine Dave Degens raced for Paul Dunstall in the 1960s, the example offered here was built using an improved 'Lowboy' frame fabricated at Dresda Autos. (Dave is certain that the original Domiracers were broken up as they succumbed to the rigours of racing.) This machine incorporates improvements that were made over time, featuring a frame made from Accles & Pollock T45 tubing (rather than Reynolds 531) on the advice of frame-building guru Ken Sprayson, and a tuned short-stroke 500cc Norton engine. The latter incorporates a Domiracer racing camshaft; downdraught cylinder head; Lucas competition magneto; and twin Amal GP carburettors. Other notable features include Borrani alloy wheel rims and a Smiths 9,000 RPM tachometer. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require re-commissioning and thus is sold strictly as viewed. It is hoped that supporting documentation will be available at time of sale.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1938 Triumph 498cc Speed TwinRegistration no. FVX 323Frame no. TH4593Engine no. 40-5T-29837• Recently restored and repainted in Triumph's trademark Amaranth Red• First year of production model, fitted with a 1940 engine• Landmark British motorcycleAlthough Edward Turner's Triumph Speed Twin caused a sensation when it appeared at the 1937 National Motorcycle Show, few could have guessed how influential it would be, establishing a template which would be adopted by all the major British factories in the following decades. Although there had been vertical-twins before previous designs suffered excessive bulk, while the Speed Twin was lighter and narrower across the crankcases than the contemporary single-cylinder Tiger 90, whose cycle parts it shared. The Speed Twin proved an enormous success for Triumph, setting it on the road to prosperity. Performance proved superb for a road-going 500, with 85mph being readily attainable, and Triumph made sure The Motor Cycle's test model was perfectly set up before handing it over; it averaged an impressive 93.75mph top speed, prompting the tester to remark that this was 'truly an amazing performance for a fully equipped 500'. Just as importantly the twin was readily brought to life, its brace of 250cc pistons being easier to kick-start than the equivalent single. This is a beautifully presented first-year example of Turner's landmark machine, with freshly applied trademark Amaranth Red paintwork and chrome. Although fitted with a (rebuilt) later 1940 engine this has been partnered with the rest of the machine for most of its life. Various invoices are on file along with a V5C. The motorcycle now only awaits fitting of a new wiring harness (supplied) and recommissioning before offering the potentially delightful experience of owning and riding a landmark motorcycle. Keys not required.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The initial manufacture of the series was overseen by Robert Cotte, the Royal Architect in Chief and Gobelins director (1656-1735) and the Duc d'Antin, Surintendant des Batiments du Roi (1708-1736), who received the first set, which consisted of 16 panels (see below). The production and distribution of the series in the 18th century is complex, but dates of the first few sets are thought to be as follows: The first set for the Duc D'Antin in 1717 (sold at Christie's London, 10th June 1993);The second set consisted of 12 panels, a gift from Louis XV to the Spanish Ambassador; The third set was woven in 1733;The fourth set, woven at some point between 1746-49, consisted of twelve pieces (sold as a whole to the Duke of Parma and currently in Turin); The fifth set included thirty panels; The sixth set (the present lot) originally consisted of 23 panels and is thought to have been woven between 1757-64;The seventh set consisted of 14 panels; The eighth set had a phenomenal 67 tapestries woven to make up the set. A set of this series with a red background was woven between 1772-1785 and given to Albert and Marie-Christine, Duke and Duchess of Saxe Teschen in 1786. Four of these are now at the J.Paul Getty Museum (acc.no 82.DD.66-69). Four tapestries from the series were presented on 18 July 1788 by Louis XVI to the artist Richard Cosway as a sign of gratitude for the four tapestry cartoons by Giulio Romano depicting the history of Scipio, which Cosway had presented to the King for display in the Louvre. Cosway gave his set to George IV shortly afterwards and they were hung in Carlton House until 1823, when they were moved to Buckingham Palace (inv.RCIN 3190-94). A Royal Commission 'Presents from the King to Princes and Ambassadors' Don Quixote (or 'The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha), captured the 17th century European noble imagination as translations permeated the various courts and libraries of the upper échelons of society.  These tapestries are of particular importance because they represent a change in artistic subject matter at the Gobelins factory. There was a noticeable shift from depictions of stories of military subjects and classical mythology to lighter and occasionally, frivolous scenes.  Charles Coypel (1694-1752), painter to Louis XV, created 28 cartoons for the Gobelins manufactory. He received 200 livres for each design. The paintings on which the present lot are based date to 1716 and 1714 (as panels 6 and 0 respectively). 'Don Quixote knighted by the Innkeeper' was the first painting of the series to be presented at the Gobelins factory and set the tone for the rest of the panels.  These specific borders, (or alentours) occur for the first time in these tapestries. Some scholars have argued that these borders, which are credited to Jean Baptiste Belin de Fontenay, have just as much iconographic significance as the scenes depicted in the central cartouches. For this set the borders form part of the fifth version of the weaving, which was a variant of the second. That version was a joint effort of Audran and Fontenay under Coypel. The fifth version, only used until 1760, was executed by Vallade who was supervised by Coypel and supplied to Audran in 1751. We know that the Duc D'Antin had wanted new paintings from Coypel and wider hangings so under Coypel a new alentour was designed, mainly using the work of Claude Audran. The piles of armour and flags to the bottom were enlarged, some books added and additional animals including a monkey. The first set of these tapestries were commissioned by the Duc d'Antin

1914-15 Star (J.5420 V. J. McKey. A.B., R.N.); Victory Medal 1914-19 (K.6687 J. Reilly. Act. L. Sto. R.N.) very fine and better (2) £60-£80 --- H.M.S. Amphion At the start of the Great War, H.M.S. Amphion was leader of the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla in the 1st Light Cruiser Squadron, assigned to the Harwich Force, defending the eastern approaches to the English Channel, under the command of Captain Cecil H. Fox. In the morning of 5 August, Amphion and the 3rd Flotilla sortied into the North Sea to patrol the area between Harwich and the Dutch island of Terschelling for German activity. At 10:15 a ship in the black, buff, and yellow colours of the Great Eastern Railway’s steamers that plied between Harwich and the Hook of Holland was spotted. Fox sent the destroyers H.M.S. Lance and H.M.S. Landrail to investigate and shortly afterwards another destroyer reported that a trawler had seen a suspicious ship, ‘throwing things overboard, presumably mines’ H.M.S. Amphion led the flotilla to investigate and observed that the fleeing ship was deploying mines even then. At 10:45, Lance opened fire at a range of 4,400 yards. The target was S.M.S. Königin Luise, a former Hamburg-Heligoland excursion boat that had been converted to an auxiliary minelayer by the Germans. They had planned to mount a pair of 8.8-centimetre (3.5 in) guns on board, but they did not have the time to do so; her only armament was a pair of lighter guns and 180 mines. On the night of 4 August, she had departed Emden and headed into the North Sea to lay mines off the Thames Estuary, which she began to do at dawn. The fire from the destroyers was ineffective until Amphion closed to a range of 7,000 yards and began hitting the German ship at about 11:15. By noon, Königin Luise was sinking and the three British ships rescued 5 officers and 70 ratings. The flotilla proceeded onwards with their patrol until they reached the Dutch coast around 21:00 and turned for home. Fox was uncertain as to the locations of the mines laid by Königin Luise and laid a course that was seven nautical miles west of where he thought the mines were. He guessed wrongly and led his flotilla over the danger area. At 06:35, Amphion struck a mine that detonated underneath her bridge. The explosion set her forecastle on fire and broke the ship’s keel. The destroyer H.M.S. Linnet attempted to tow the cruiser, but a deep crack across her upper deck showed that she was hogging badly and Fox ordered his crew to abandon ship. Shortly afterwards, her forward magazine exploded, throwing one 4-inch gun into the air that narrowly missed Linnet. One of Amphion’s shells burst on the deck of the destroyer Lark, killing two of her men and the only German prisoner rescued from the cruiser. Amphion then rapidly sank within 15 minutes of the explosion losing 1 officer and 131 ratings killed in the sinking, plus an unknown number of the crew rescued from Königin Luise. She was the first ship of the Royal Navy to be sunk in the Great War. Victor James McKey was born in Solihull, Warwickshire, on 12 December 1892 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy, Second Class on 28 September 1909. Advanced Able Seaman on 20 April 1912, he joined H.M.S. Amphion on 15 September 1913 and was killed when she struck a mine and sunk on 6 August 1914. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. John Reilly was born in Larkhall, Lanarkshire, on 20 January 1892 and entered the Royal Navy on 7 May 1910. He joined H.M.S. Amphion on 2 April 1913 and was killed when she struck a mine and sunk on 6 August 1914. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
