A good pair of late 19th / early 20th century Louis-XV-style walnut vitrines: gilt-metal-mounted and serpentine-fronted; central gilt-metal scallop-shell finials above glazed doors enclosing shelves; flanked by gilt-metal mounts; three vernis Martin lacquered panels below; the central panels depicting lovers within countryside surroundings in typical 18th century style; raised on cabriole legs with gilt-metal shutes and sabot (168cm highest x 42cm deepest x 84cm wide) (2)Condition Report: The glass looks original, there is a little fading on the wood but nothing too dramatic - it is very nice quality. The gilt metal has dulled down nicely with age, some tiny flecks of paintwork away from the lacquer panels, quite dirty in places, one cabinet with slight scratches to the left wooden upright where the glazing starts (could be polished out), no evidence of woodworm, one small split at the back of one concave returns, some scratching and a scuff to the rear which could be polished out. The interior lining is faded somewhat due to sunlight and the fronts of the serpentine shelves are noted to be a little worn. The cabinets come with keys. One cabinet is slightly lighter than the other and one has a gilt metal mount missing at the top. Generally is good order with no major issues - commensurate with age.
A late 18th century mahogany chest-on-chest; the dentil cornice above two half-width and three graduated full-width oak lined drawers retaining original cast gilt metal Rococo handles (gilt worn) and flanked by canted corners with blind fret carving, the lower section with a brushing slide over three full-width graduated drawers, raised on high bracket feet (109cm wide x 57cm deep x 191cm high)It is noted that the wood is fairly dark, there are several pieces of replaced veneer along the carcass around the drawers. Some of the cockbeading has gone as well on a few of the drawers and there is some replaced cockbeading. The right hand blind fret canted corner has split in the middle approx. 7cm prevalent mostly around the lower drawer area of the top section. The dentil cornice appears OK. The wood starts to get a bit lighter on the base section and there are scuffs, scratches and general old repairs etc., commensurate with age. Quite a lot of new wood above the escutcheons on the carcass. The left hand blind fret canting looks in good order. The drawers are oak lined with solid mahogany fronts and the handles appear original. Possible historic re-polishing at some stage and although some of the handles show original gilding most of them are dark through oxidisation again commensurate with age. So the chest is not without faults and in the Auctioneer’s opinion could be restored to a fairly high standard if desired.
AN ART DECO STYLE EMERALD RING the mount and shank are made in heavy white metal, with a band of black enamel to the bezel, the cabochon emerald measures 12mm x 10.5mm x 6.6mm, finger size approximately L, weight 4.6gms Condition Report: Emerald has been tested with the Chelsea filter (bright pink) and Spectroscope lines in the red slight absorption in the yellow and orange bands, has numerous natural inclusions, not cloudy, all on the whole clear, half is considerably lighter green than the other, a pretty mid green. Mount feels heavy, metal bright white no hallmarks, enamel has a few tiny flea bite chips, on the whole pretty good.
A STAINLESS STEEL MOVADO ERMETO, WITH A REPTILE SKIN COVERED CASE the watch has a cream dial with gold coloured Arabic numerals, and blued steel hands. Numbers to the back of the case 1232 314A, dimensions open 7.4cm x 3.4cm, closed 4.9cm x 3.4cm, weight 75.2gms Condition Report: Appears to be running, winds ok by opening and shutting the case. There is a chip to the glass, bottom right hand side, inside the case, either the chip has been retrieved, or its still in situ, I cant tell. There are patches of lighter skin on this cover, not all in one place like there would be if it was sun damage, possibly natural? Doesn't appear to be rubbing either, more to the back than the front. No snags or splits stitching all good.

A fine and very rare late 17th century ebony veneered quarter repeating table timepieceThomas Tompion, Londini Fecit, un-numbered, circa 1680-85Surmounted by a bold facetted foliate-bud handle on internal pommels set on flowerhead mounts, the caddy with four applied foliate scroll mounts set against red silk, the moulded cornice over long rectangular glazed side panels to a moulded plinth base on turned bun feet, the front door with pierced brass sound fret over twin escutcheons to the uprights. The 6 inch square gilt brass dial signed 'Tho. Tompion Londini Fecit' along the lower edge within a single line border enclosing the winged cherub's head spandrels, the silvered chapter ring with five-minute Arabic numerals, minute track and Roman hours divided by meeting arrow-head half-hour markers and inner quarter hour track, the finely matted centre with good blued steel hands, and typical three latched dial feet to the movement. The movement united by six latched, knopped and ringed pillars, the frontplate measuring 15cms x 21cms (6ins x 8.25ins) and cut to accommodate part of the elaborate brass and steel quarter striking train, the larger backplate measuring 16.5cms x 21cms (6.5ins x 8.25ins) cut with an arched aperture to accommodate the protruding hour bell, and further cut for the pivotted quarter striking levers, signed across the centre 'Tho Tompion Londini Fecit' in a rectangle, the lower third of the plate decorated with symmetrical flower heads on stalks emanating from the lower edge, the upper portion of the plate with a further six flowerheads within foliage. The verge escapement mounted on a knife edge and driven by a chain fusee and short pendulum with pear shaped bob. The hours and quarters struck at will by pulling a cord from either side of the case (each repeat cord passing through a brass ferrule), struck on two bells and hammers. 35cms (13 1/2ins) highFootnotes:Jeremy Evans lists only five un-numbered 8-day spring driven timepieces by Thomas Tompion. All are in ebony Phase One cases and all have the bell set into a cut-out aperture in the large backplate. Two emanate from two of the great 20th century collections, the first from The Wetherfield Collection, inventory number 23, which with the added complication of an alarm train sold at Christies, London, June 2011 for £289,000. The second from the Iden collection, (illustrated in Percy Dawson's overview published by the Antique Collectors Club 1987 on page 87) which is now in private hands. The cut out was necessary because at this time Tompion used a backplate that was larger than the frontplate. It is a rare feature, but others are known, the latest known to us dates to circa 1687. R.W. Symonds in his standard work illustrates three backplates with cut-outs for the bell:Figure 174 - the backplate of clock number 22, the angle of the shoulders are comparable with the current lot, however the repeat slots run all the way to the edge of the plate, the signature sits within a full pattern of flowers and foliage. Figure 176 - the backplate of clock number 66 has smaller, shallower shoulders and the repeat is activated via a Z-bar. The engraving is lighter than figure 174 and more comparable to the current lot. Figure 181 clock number 96. A similar engraved backplate with cut-out but a Z-bar repeat system was sold in these rooms and is illustrated in Dzik, 'Engraving on English Table Clocks: Art on a Canvas of Brass 1660-1800', 2019, Wild Boar Publications, p.109, Fig.7.10.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
