WAY OF THE DRAGON, THE (1972) - Tang Lung's (Bruce Lee) Double NunchakuTang Lung's (Bruce Lee) double nunchaku from Lee's martial arts movie The Way of the Dragon. Tang Lung used his nunchaku to defeat Ho's (Wei Ping-Ou) thugs in the alley behind the restaurant. The Way of the Dragon is the most personal of all Bruce Lee's films, as it is the only complete movie to showcase Lee as the star, director, producer and writer. It is also notable for being the only film to feature "The Little Dragon's" breathtaking skill with the deadly double nunchaku - a discipline that requires remarkable timing, reflexes and impeccable spatial awareness.Handmade to Lee's exact specifications, each pair of nunchaku from this unique double set is crafted from durable lightweight wood, wrapped in mesh strips, and then covered in a protective rubberised coating, with a metal chain and eye-hooks linking the two batons. Each pair was the perfect length and weight for Lee, and the bespoke covering delivered enhanced grip - a feature that was invaluable when filming in the exceptionally hot and humid climate of Hong Kong.Lee typically used two types of nunchaku in his films: one with a strong but lightweight construction, and another even lighter design with exterior padding to protect actors from impact injuries. This set of nunchaku (one of only two) comes from the former category, and Lee used them to execute sections of the mesmerising double-nunchaku battle filmed at Golden Harvest Studios. Unlike its sister set, which has two parallel indentations running around the entire circumference of one of the four batons, this double set is entirely uniform in its design.Time has oxidised the outer rubber coating, which now presents a lighter shade compared with its original appearance in 1972. However, the original colour is still apparent on the tips. Oxidation of the internal adhesive has also pulled the exterior rubber closer to the mesh strips wrapped around the wood, giving the nunchaku a more ribbed appearance. The lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the family of Lee's close friend and training partner George Lee, which expands upon its history. Dimensions (each): 95 cm x 3.5 cm x 3.5 cm (37 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1 1/2") Ownership of this weapon may be restricted. Please enquire for further details. It is solely the buyer's responsibility to check, prior to ordering, the legal status of this prop within their own country and its importation therein. Estimate: £30,000 - 50,000 † This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, November 3rd. LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING, THE (2003) - Orc HelmetAn orc helmet from Peter Jackson's fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Orcs wore all manner of mismatched armour throughout the trilogy, and this particular style can be seen worn by an orc manning a trebuchet during the Battle of Pelennor Fields.Made from fibreglass and resin, the helmet is moulded to resemble several hammered plates of metal bolted together. It features a rubber nose hook and narrow, far-spaced eyeholes, as well as a leather chinstrap with a metal buckle. The helmet is painted dark grey, dry-brushed with a lighter grey, and has dark brown and green in its crevices to resemble rust and oxidation. The item comes with a letter of authenticity from production company New Line Cinema. SHORT CIRCUIT (1986) - Full-Size Light-Up Johnny 5 RobotA full-size, light-up Johnny 5 robot from John Badham's sci-fi comedy Short Circuit. NOVA Laboratory S.A.I.N.T. (Strategic Artificially Intelligent Nuclear Transport) robot Number 5 was struck by lightning and became sentient. After escaping from NOVA, he befriended Stephanie Speck (as played by Ally Sheedy) and adopted the name Johnny 5.Designed by iconic sci-fi concept artist Syd Mead with influence from sketches by Robotics Supervisor Eric Allard, the Johnny 5 character was realised for the screen through full-size puppets, including remote-control animatronic versions with various movements, and lower-function or static puppets. This Johnny 5 is largely static, with lights in the eyes and servo motors in some of the shoulder and arm components that may have been functional at one time. These lighter-weight static robots were built for use where a heavier piece with additional mechanisms was not necessary, such as action shots of Johnny 5 falling. This Johnny 5 prop retains its original first-film color scheme and detailing, and was not updated for the sequel; it has been intact as a unit since production on the first film. The full-size prop features a blue and grey body made primarily of vacuum-formed plastic and metal with simulated buttons and tech panels on the front and back of the torso. Beneath this outer covering are mechanical and electronic elements, the majority of which are cosmetic though designed to appear practical, including cables and wiring to the mechanisms in his torso and arms, with major connections covered by black rubber bellow-like inserts. His lower body features two plated tread belts in triangular configurations on his left and right sides complemented by two small rear wheels with black rubber tires. Mounted over his left shoulder is a wood and resin laser weapon with a red decal strip on the front to simulate the emitter. The head features orange neck pistons; coloured wires and cables; a blue and grey plasting shell matching the body; black metal flaps that serve as upper and lower eyelids; and eyes with gold-colour rings, blue irises reminiscent of camera apertures, and clear lenses that glow red via a small switch in the base of the back of the head. The head has undergone some restoration, specifically to the eyes and their electronics, allowing them to glow with the aid of a rechargeable internal battery that charges through a labelled connector accessible on the back of the head. Also included are original red eye lenses attached to pieces of yellow foam, additional wiring, and a wall-plug charger. Johnny 5 exhibits some wear from production and age, including scuffing, paint chipping, staining, and some loose components. Dimensions: 147.5 cm x 76.25 cm x 178 cm (58" x 30" x 70")Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide.Special shipping required; see notice in the Buyer's Guide. A RARE BLUE AND WHITE DOCUMENTARY 'KUI XING' VESSELDated to the Jiawu year, corresponding to 1654 and of the periodSuperbly potted with gently curving walls rising to a flat lipped rim, painted around the exterior in underglaze blue with Kui Xing holding a brush and silver ingot riding a cloud above swirling waves, his scarves billowing in the wind, the north-star constellation in the sky along with a square dou measure, calligraphic inscription. 22.1cm (8 3/4in) diam.Footnotes:甲午年(公元1654年) 青花魁星圖盌Provenance: Berwald Oriental Art, London, 4 November 2014來源:倫敦古董商 Berwald Oriental Art,2014年11月4日Identified by the writing brush held in his raised hand and his iconic 'back-kick' posture, Kui Xing 魁星 ('Chief Star') is a Daoist deity worshipped to obtain academic success. It would therefore, have been extremely auspicious for a scholar to have his items decorated with this figure, to inspire him in his writing and achieve examination success. The Chinese character Kui (魁) is composed of the ideograph for 'demon' (鬼) and the ideograph for 'ladle' (斗). The ladle or 'dipper' (as Kui Xing is also associated with the North Star) is depicted on the present lot in the form of a square vessel floating above the waves. Kui Xing is often portrayed with a demonic appearance, a hideous face, a horn-like protuberance on his head, and a sinewy body. According to legend, he was once a mortal scholar with outstanding literary skills but was repeatedly failed in the civil service examinations due to his repulsive appearance. Out of frustration and humiliation, Kui Xing threw himself into a river, where he was saved by a mythical monster called an ao. He then ascended to the Big Dipper and became the stellar patron of the literati and the God of Literature.Dreaming of Kui Xing the night before the exams was considered an auspicious sign and the candidate who obtained the highest results, known as the First Scholar (zhangyuan), would walk first on a staircase decorated with the ao mythical beast. Representations of Kui Xing and Ao are thus a symbol of literary success and highest achievement at the Imperial examinations. The other side is with a calligraphic inscription in three lines: 北極之象,太陰之精鍾英毓秀,翼我文明甲午春日寫於花前解貂Which may be translated as:The image of the polestarand the essence of the MoonConcentrate what's special, nurture what's refinedand advance the brilliance of literary cultureWritten on a Spring day in the Jiawu year (1654) before flowers and undoing fur.Of particular interest is the last line: 'before flowers and undoing fur', encapsulating the changing season from winter to spring when one sheds warmer clothes for lighter ones. It hints at the Jin dynasty official Ruan Fu, who is said to have exchanged his expensive furs for cheap wine. He was impeached by officials but was pardoned by the emperor. The term 'exchanging gold and fur for wine' became a metaphor for unfettered pleasure and individuality, characteristics admired by late Ming literati. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
