Victoria Cross interest - An archive of post WW2 letters, all addressed to Philip Dosse, from Brigadier The Rt Honourable Sir John Smyth Bt, V.C. M.C (1893-1983_ All of the letters date from the mid 1970’s era, and all appear to relate to the reviewing of various publications sent to Smyth by Dosse, who was the founder of Hansom Books in 1947. All but one letter are type written, with the remaining letter being entirely handwritten. All are signed in Sir John’s usual way of ‘Jackie Smyth’. Sir John Smyth was an officer in the Indian army during WW1 and WW2, with his first commission being with the 15th Ludhinia Sikhs in 1913. He earned his Victoria Cross as a 21 year Lieutenant in 1915, plus he was also awarded the Russian Order of St George 4th class, and he went on to win the Military Cross in Waziristan in 1920. Smyth commanded the 127th Infantry Brigade during WW2, and retired with the honorary rank of Brigadier. He later became a Conservative Member of Parliament, and was made a Baronet in 1956. Approximately 24 letters, with a selection shown in the images. Plus, RAF interest: a 1920’s table lighter memento from the 1928 Trans-African long distance formation flight, from Cairo to Cape Town. Comprising of a nickel plated brass lighter, mounted upon a turned bakelite base. One side of the lighter shows a map, in relief, of the Cape of Good Hope and the surrounding area. The other side is engraved ‘Cairo-Cape-Cairo Flight. March-May 1928. Sgt C.Howard’. Notes: the RAF conducted their first long distance formation Trans-African flight in 1926, led by Wing Commander C.W.H.Pulford, using a detachment of 4 Fairey IIID biplanes. Pulford’s Fairey biplane recorded almost 141 flying hours, and some 14,000 miles on the clock. It became an annual tradition for the RAF to fly this Trans-African route, with formation flights also taking place in 1927, 1928, and 1929, which gave the personnel valuable experience in establishing aerial communication between far flung corners of the British Empire. The exact reasons for the presentation of the lighter are unknown, and it’s also unknown if Sgt C.Howard was part of the flight crew in 1928, or part of the ground crew team. Approximately 11.5cm height, 5.8cm width across the base. Condition: some wear, but generally good. No chips or cracks to the bakelite base, and the lighter is securely affixed. Some very tiny chipping to the nickel plating in a couple of places, and a dent to one of the narrower sides. It’s unknown if the lighter would operate as originally intended. The documents are generally very good. Good clear text, with little wear to the papers.

One of the lids has the inscription from Col Trotter, with the other having the engraved badge of the South Notts Hussars. Notes: Colonel Charles William Trotter is believe to have have first joined the regiment in 1888, and at the time this item was gifted he was a Lieutenant-Colonel, but with the honorary rank of Colonel. He received his full Colonelcy on August 5th 1918. He was mentioned in dispatches twice, and received the Companion of the Order of the Bath in the 1918 Birthday Honours List. Approximately 20.5cm x 11.8cm x 9cm, weight 973.5g. Condition: generally good. Some normal wear from polishing and handling, which has resulted in the inscriptions showing a little wear. UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901. Gold Half-Sovereign, 1887. London. Imperfect J DISH L508. The issues the mint encountered with the Jubilee coins are well documented and were exacerbated by the pressure for the coins to be ready for the Queen's Golden Jubilee on 20 June 1887. Records show that 1,771,425 half-sovereigns were struck in 1887, but only 871,770, less than 50% of the total, were fit for circulation. To improve metal flow silver was included in the alloy, which makes all 1887 London Jubilee head half-sovereigns stand out for their lighter colour. Although this variety is the most common of the 1887 Jubilee head half sovereigns, it is highly sought after due to the fascinating story surrounding the series, recently told by David Iverson and Steve Hill In their publication 'The Jubilee Head Gold Half Sovereign 1887-1893' (Sovereign Rarities, 2019).Crowned and veiled Jubilee bust facing left; JEB on truncation, imperfect J; inscription: VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRIT: REGINA F: D:. / High, crowned and embellished shield-of-arms; date in exergue; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.In secure plastic holder, graded PCGS MS63 , certification number 42501330.PCGS population in this grade: 130.PCGS population in higher grade: 163.Reference: DISH-L508; S-3869; Marsh-478FDiameter: 19.3 mm.Weight: 3.99 g. A splendid example of the Rover K-Series (VVC)-engined Seven from single ownership and in simply remarkable condition. As the Seven’s popularity as a model at Lotus ebbed and flowed during the late 1960s, whenever it looked as though the company’s drive upmarket would leave it behind and it would be axed from the range, Caterham Cars’ founder, Graham Nearn, would bang on the factory door and buy a handful of cars to try and persuade the powers that be to keep it in production. As sole distributors and obviously staunch supporters of the model, when the time came for Lotus to finally pull the plug in 1973, it was Caterham who took over the reins, with Nearn buying the operation lock, stock and barrel (plus a number of redundant Formula Ford 51s to sweeten the deal for the now ‘luxury’ car brand) and the Caterham Seven was born. The superb example we have on offer here was first registered in 1998 having been factory-built and consequently being allocated an ‘R’ registration as opposed to the less desirable ‘Q Plate’ with its kit-car connotations. Finished in Caterham Red, it was supplied new to its one and only keeper back in 1998 and is only now coming up for sale as he is no longer able to enjoy it as he once did. Always garaged and used in summer only, it is immaculately presented and could conceivably be 25 weeks old as opposed to rolling off the assembly line some 25 years ago. It’s fitted with the superior de Dion rear suspension layout and was factory-fitted with AP ‘big’ front brakes and a 6-speed gearbox. Over the years, Caterham have employed a staggering range of engines from mainstream manufacturers such as Ford and Vauxhall through to Rover, but it’s the lighter weight units that seem to suit the car best and the 150bhp Rover 1.8-litre K-Series in VVC (Variable Valve Control) configuration, as fitted here, was the choice of most buyers between 1997 and 2006.Optioned equipment includes leather seats, full-harness seat belts, Momo steering wheel, anti-cavitation oil tank, battery cut-off switch, a heater and full weather equipment. The only modifications from standard are LED headlights which can easily be replaced with standard lights. The current indicated mileage is 25,500 and we understand that the car has been serviced annually by a Caterham specialist to an extremely high standard. The engine was refreshed recently although there were no issues, it was simply preventative maintenance. It’s supplied with a full service history supported by numerous invoices, the V5C and both keys.As can be seen from our images, this lovely Seven is in the sort of condition that can only be achieved by dedicated care and attention to detail over the years and we invite your inspection at our Race Retro sale to fully appreciate the quality on offer.Specification Make: CATERHAM Model: 7 VVC Year: 1998 Chassis Number: SDKRDCARW0030522 Registration Number: R79 AFM Transmission: Manual Engine Number: RC-30522 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 25600 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
A genuine 19,000 mile Sapphire Cosworth in excellent condition throughout. In 1986, the original Sierra Cosworth was a new kind of performance car - a blue-collar hero able to humble true sports cars. A couple of years later, Ford introduced the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth, a more ‘discreet’ version, built using the four-door Sapphire bodyshell, initially with the same rear-wheel drive layout as the three-door original and then later with four-wheel drive, but even with a more restrained exterior, a plush velour interior and an executive four-door shell, the Sapphire was far from dull. The early rear-wheel drive cars benefited from 204bhp from the YBB engine (205 block), a T5 gearbox, 7" x 15" lattice alloy wheels, front and rear spoilers, side skirts and Recaro seats, with 0-60mph taking 6.1 seconds. Despite the extra power and potential for greater traction, the later 4x4 Sapphire was slower to 60mph, reaching the speed in 6.6 seconds. Approximately 13,140 2WD Sapphire examples were produced during 1988-1989 and all were assembled in Belgium at Ghenk, powered by UK-built Ford-Cosworth engines.Supplied new by Candor Motors Ltd in Colchester (Dealer Code 44179) on 11th June 1990 to its first keeper, Mr David King, this particular two-wheel drive Sapphire RS Cosworth is finished in Diamond White complemented by a full Raven leather interior. Used sparingly throughout its life the Sapphire, at the time of viewing, had a current recorded mileage of just 19,173 which, over a period of some 24 years, equates to an annual mileage of less than 800. In superb order throughout, the Cosworth has clearly been maintained as required confirmed by the original service book displaying 11 service stamps. The car's history file and dealer book pack also contains a selection of previous V5Cs, older MOT certificates and tax discs, Vecta immobiliser details and various invoices and associated paperwork. It's recently benefited from four new tyres, however three of the original D40 tyres have been retained but are clearly not now fitted due to age and a new standard fitment exhaust has very recently being sourced and is now in place. With the availability of a substantial number of aftermarket performance and cosmetic enhancements for these cars, it’s rare to find one with nothing added or nothing taken away, so if you are looking for an unmolested, original RS Cosworth, this is probably one of the worthiest candidates currently available. The lighter and rarer version of the Sapphire, this two-wheel drive example is one for the Ford connoisseur offering its new owner entry into the exclusive world of RS ownership and with that in mind, we welcome and encourage your early inspection to satisfy yourself as to the suitability of this increasingly desirable Cosworth. Serial Number One of 25, offered directly from its first and only owner with just 121 miles from new. A modern interpretation of an icon by Prodrive - reimagined, redefined and recreated to deliver the ultimate competition car for the road. In 1997, Prodrive debuted the two-door Subaru Impreza WRC 'Group A' car and won the FIA World Rally Championship Manufacturer’s Title in its inaugural season. The WRC97, as it was known, thrilled motorsport fans the world over and gave birth to much celebrated road-going versions. 25 years after the introduction of the WRC97, the Prodrive P25 was launched, a modern interpretation of the rally icon reimagined, redefined and recreated using its DNA to deliver the ultimate competition car for the road.Peter Stevens, who designed the original Impreza WRC in 1997, restyled a number of features for the P25 and working alongside the Prodrive Engineering Team, the modern version is aligned with the heart and spirit of the original rally contender. The technical focus was on making the P25 lighter, more powerful and with even better handling than its 1990s sibling and as a result, the Prodrive P25 is, quite simply, the best road-going Subaru Impreza ever built. The specification is truly impressive, with the P25 being based on the lightweight bodyshell of the Subaru Impreza WRX STi and then comprehensively re-engineered to cutting-edge motorsport standards by Prodrive’s world renowned engineers and technicians. The engine is a heavily reworked version of Subaru's long-serving EJ25 turbocharged 2.5-litre flat-four now boasting forged pistons, stronger connecting rods, ported cylinder heads and a new Garrett turbo resulting in an impressive 440bhp at 6,000rpm and 457lb/ft from just 3,000rpm. Additional features include a competition anti-lag system (ALS) and rally start launch control along with an Akropovic titanium rear exhaust with silencer bypass system. It's mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox, plus an active electronically controlled centre differential that varies the amount of torque sent to each axle, upgraded driveshafts and prop shafts. Retardation is provided by AP Racing brakes sitting behind Prodrive GC-012L 8.5 x 19" wheel rims, wearing Bridgestone Potenza Sport 235/35 R 19 tyres all under carbon wheel arches that take their cue from the original WRC97. Handling benefits from an improved aero package and the front bumper and splitter reduce lift and improve cooling airflow, whilst the P25’s carbon rear wing, also based on the WRC97 design, provides impressive downforce. As the name implies, just 25 highly personalised examples left Prodrive over a two year period. Here at Iconic Auctioneers, we are extremely proud to offer the first ever Prodrive P25 to a physical auction anywhere in the world. Serial number 36A-001 is a right-hand drive example and is being offered directly by its first and only owner having covered just 121 miles since purchase. There are over £17,000 worth of 'options' for this particular P25, as detailed below:Sparco SPX trimmed seatsTwo 4-point harnesses (only available on SPX trimmed seat option & rear seat-delete option required)Rear seat-delete and roll cage installSpare wheel mounted in boot with quick jackPersonalised wheel colour option: *TOTAL 12 wheels, six gold wheels with tyres (delivered on gold), six Anthracite, just rims.Bespoke P25 car coverAn homage to the world's original affordable sports car and the heroic drivers who wrote them into motorsport folklore, the Prodrive P25 is not only an amazing car to drive in the real world, but it’s also a true collectors piece, much like the preceding 22B. Presenting as you would expect for a car that’s covered just over 120 miles since it left Prodrive, this really is an unrepeatable opportunity to join a rather exclusive and illustrious club. Seriously interested parties are welcome to get in touch with Harry Whale to find out more.Specification Make: PRODRIVE Model: P25 Year: 2024 Chassis Number: 36A-001 Registration Number: P25 AYO Transmission: Six-Speed Sequential Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 121 MilesClick here for more details and images
**Please note this vehicle is not single ownership as erroneously catalogued**One of just 25 UK-supplied, right-hand drive examples of Mercedes-Benz' much revered 507bhp 'super-coupé. Following on from the SLK55 AMG Black Series, Mercedes-Benz launched the CLK63 AMG Black Series - a limited edition coupé (only) model with just 700 examples produced worldwide between April 2007 and March 2008 - and a car that AMG says was largely inspired by the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. 'It 's pretty hardcore. We’ve got down to 7min 52sec on the Nürburgring….and that was in traffic. I don’t think we’ve ever done a more complete performance car' , says Tobias Moers, the man who oversees the engineering, development and testing of Mercedes-Benz’s AMG range. The CLK Black Series is based around the regular CLK63, but this is no ordinary AMG Mercedes as, although the two share the same driveline, the Black Series is a very different car. With a huge front spoiler designed to force cooling air into an enlarged radiator whilst also dialling out lift to make it more neutral at speed, the CLK Black Series instantly appears more menacing than the standard coupé. Bulging wheel arches incorporated into the body panels, air vents in the front wings, a deep rear valance and a carbon fibre rear spoiler complete the makeover. That and a set of 19" alloys weighing just 11kg each – 3kg lighter than those of the standard CLK63.Inside, the differences are also obvious, with carbon fibre-reinforced trim on the door inserts and centre console, a forged aluminium gear selector, a flat-bottomed wheel, expensive bucket seats and AMG also replaces the rear bench with two trimmed wells. The CLK Black Series utilises AMG's mighty (and largely hand-built) M156 V8, the brand's first entirely self-built engine launched in 2005 and undoubtedly one of the greatest production car V8s ever built. Power is up from the 478bhp of the standard CLK63 AMG to 507bhp at 6,800rpm, offering an impressive power-to-weight ratio of just over 300bhp per tonne whilst torque remains the same with 464lb/ft at 5,250rpm. Upgrades to the power unit include the adoption of a larger magnesium dual-intake manifold with two internal butterfly valves, a reworked, less restrictive exhaust system and remapped electronics resulting in a sound track that is rather addictive, described as a subdued rumble gradually building into a deep roar before erupting into an all-guns-blazing blare.Power is channelled through Mercedes’ SpeedShift 7G-Tronic gearbox (with Sport and Manual modes) but fettled by AMG for more efficient changes. It's considered a very versatile transmission, being able to swap-up smoothly under light loads but also extremely precise under hard acceleration through the wheel-mounted paddles. All the power is channelled through a suitably beefed-up drivetrain including a limited-slip differential with its own oil cooler and pump to keep temperatures in check. As those wheel arches suggest, there have been major revisions underneath, with the front track widened by 75mm and the rear by 66mm, bestowing the car with real race car agility – again, reinforced by the fitment of adjustable springs and shock absorbers that allow you to set your own compression and rebound rates. However, the CLK Black Series is also a compliant and usable road car (air-conditioning and cruise-control are still present) with AMG allowing enough suspension travel to ensure acceptable levels of comfort. The steering too is very well engineered, providing excellent feedback, whilst prodigious grip, helped no doubt by the huge 285/30 R19 Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, allows the car to carry big speeds into corners and then dispatch its power with real conviction. Meanwhile, the array of driver aids, including a specially calibrated ESP, are nowhere near as intrusive as in the standard CLK63 AMG, so lurid power slides are part of its repertoire, if that's on the agenda.Mercedes claims the 0-62mph time has dropped by 0.3 seconds to just 4.3 seconds, however the marque is notoriously conservative when it comes to quoting acceleration. Top speed is limited to 186mph - 'It is capable of more' says Moers. The car presented here is a 2007 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series and is one of just 25 UK-market/right-hand drive cars produced. It looks particularly striking in Black Metallic, apt for such a purposeful Black Series car, has covered 24,600 miles from new and benefits from a comprehensive service history, the most recent carried out at Sytner Mercedes-Benz of Bath in November 2024.On offer from a private Collection of special cars, it has been used sparingly but always meticulously stored and serviced. This is an opportunity not to be missed, as trying to find such a rare and revered car in right-hand drive, with such low mileage and diligent single ownership, is close to impossible.Arguably, the CLK63 AMG Black Series offers better value for money than other comparable limited edition Mercedes supercars of this era. As we know, cars like these, produced in short runs with bespoke large capacity and naturally-aspirated engines are less likely to be offered by manufacturers in the future and are destined to become even more collectable. The last word should really come from Jeremy Clarkson, a former owner of a CLK63 Black Series - 'For sheer excitement, the CLK Black is a match for absolutely anything. Since my test car went back to Mercedes, I have been thinking about it a lot. Because I’m not sure that anyone’s life is quite complete unless they have one'.SpecificationMake: MERCEDES-BENZModel: CLK63 AMG BLACK SERIESYear: 2007Chassis Number: WDB2093772F243015Registration Number: FG57 XVVTransmission: Semi-auto Engine Number: 15698260020175 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 24600 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Black / AnthraciteClick here for more details and images
An unrepeatable opportunity to acquire a car that’s been purpose-built to take on one of the world’s greatest motor sport challenges, yet remains UK-registered and road legal. The Sport version of Audi's sensational Quattro was launched in the autumn of 1983, three years after the original's unveiling at the Geneva Salon had taken the motoring world by storm. It had a shortened wheelbase and was fitted with a new, lighter version of the five-cylinder engine boasting an aluminium block and a Twin-Cam 20-valve cylinder head, while anti-lock braking made its first appearance on a Quattro-equipped Audi. Running on Bosch HI-Jetronic fuel-injection, the extensively revised engine developed a claimed 306bhp and gave this quite remarkable road car a top speed of around 155mph. Audi built 214 examples of the Sport, though only 164 were actually sold to customers. We are delighted to be able to offer Keith Edward's legendary 800bhp-plus, SWB Audi S1. It was initially purchased by garage owner and rally driver Keith as a family road car but there were always lots of cars around and the Audi was eventually hardly used. Passionately interested in motorsport, Keith was staring at the car one day and considering selling it, but then he thought that it might be fun to prepare it for a bit of hill climbing at local club level. There simply is not space here to cover the next 30 years of the Quattro's history but a lot of it is available on some much-watched videos and magazine articles. Success at club level led to the car being developed further and further as Keith is a talented and innovative engineer, until it was so competition-focused that it was no longer practical to run it as a road-registered car.Developed and then developed some more over the years, there followed about ten years in the British Hillclimb Championship, a further four or five enjoying invitation events around Europe and finally the ultimate accolade, an invitation from Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to take part in 'The Race to the Clouds'.Keith has a legendary attention to detail and throughout the two decades of development, every nut, bolt, pipe and bracket was given consideration in terms of its weight, fitness for purpose and aesthetic merit with shaving tenths of a second the criteria. There came a point however, when the only way to make the car more competitive was to shorten the wheelbase, as had been done by the factory in late 1983 and Dialynx of Swindon, renowned Quattro specialists and builders of SWB cars and Sport Quattro 'Group B' replicas, were tasked with the job.The body was stripped of its panels, reduced in length by removing 320mm between the B and C posts and rebuilt using Kevlar-composite panels and mouldings (copied directly from Audi UK's own 'Group B' car), with most of the glass replaced by Perspex. Only the original roof and doors remained and even the doors were pared down to about 4lbs in weight. Shortly afterwards, the 10-valve engine was replaced by a 20-valve unit which was extensively modified by Dialynx. Details of these engine mods are academic as the engine has been further developed by Keith himself since then (current spec below). The car's adventures in Europe in this form are all documented in the enormous history file and on a number of YouTube videos. The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), also known as 'The Race to the Clouds', is an invitational automobile hill climb to the summit of Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain in Colorado - and is held on the last Sunday in June. From the start at 9,400ft, the 12.42 mile course has 156 bends and finishes at 14,115ft, a climb of over 4,700ft, not far short of a mile vertically. If you were in an unpressurised aeroplane at that height you would have been wearing an oxygen mask for some time, so setting up an internal combustion engine to run on reduced oxygen levels can be complex. The invitation to run the car at Pikes Peak is a major honour within the hill climb community and was proudly received by Keith. The Audi was shipped to Colorado Springs in both 2018 and 2019, however neither year was to bring fulfilment, with the car overheating in 2018 (subsequently sorted after testing at Blyton Park, pre-COVID) and despite good practice runs in 2019, the clouds closed in on Race Day and that was that. The full story is on YouTube. Whilst intending to return in 2020, COVID regulations, increasing costs and lack of time mean that Keith has sadly made the decision that after 30-plus years, having accomplished everything else, he and his beloved Audi will have to part ways.We understand that the Audi would be welcome again at Pikes Peak with Keith having received another invitation recently or, closer to home, would be welcome here in the UK at club level hill climbs, sprints or even Time Attack. UK-registered and road-legal (subject to a few sensitive modifications) it could be used on the road driving to events, but equally it could just be a perfect showpiece in any serious Collection. This car has been viewed more than 2,000,000 times on YouTube and has been magazine-featured all over the globe. It's accompanied by 18 box files of history, entry forms, programmes, results sheets and 30 years of correspondence, MSA paperwork, log books etc.'Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence' said Vince Lombardi, after whom the Superbowl is named. To suggest that Keith has pursued perfection is no understatement, he has undoubtedly achieved excellence.SpecificationEngine: 2.266-litre, in-line five-cylinder, cast iron block, aluminum cylinder head with four valves per cylinder.
