WAUGH EVELYN: (1903-1966) English writer whose novels include Vile Bodies (1930) and Brideshead Revisited (1945). A.L.S., with his initials E.W., to one side of his personal printed postcard, Piers Court, near Dursley, Gloucestershire, n.d. (c.1948), to a firm of bookbinders, most likely Messrs. Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Waugh sends his correspondents some instructions and returns some samples of leather, asking 'Will you please use the lighter of the two blues for binding 'The Loved One', sheets of which should reach you early in September. Please bind in full leather with silk ends and doublures, leather joints. Trim & guild all edges. Sew on five raised broad bands & tool bands (narrow classical roll). No other tooling except roll repeated round doublures'. One small central surface crease and an area of discolouration to the left half of the card. GThe London bookbinding firm of Sangorski & Sutcliffe was established in 1901 and is considered to be one of the most important bookbinding companies of the 20th century.The Loved One: An Anglo-American Tragedy (1948) is a short satirical novel by Waugh concerning the funeral business in Los Angeles, the British expatriate community in Hollywood, and the film industry.

A TURKEY RUG OF 'SMALL-PATTERNED HOLBEIN' DESIGN approximately 175 x 135cm Provenance: The personal collection of the Late Robert Kime, LVO (1946-2022) This rug has been made to the design of a well known group of Ottoman rugs thought to date from the mid 15th until the mid 16th centuries. It is thought that these rugs were woven in western Anatolia, in the Ushak region. Most rugs from the group of the early period have a variant of a 'kufic' border design that is reminiscent of a type of stylised calligraphy that originated in the city of Kufa in the 7th century. However, this rug is different, and although the border has aspects in common with 'kufic' border designs, it unusual in its combination of design elements (for example the use of partial stellar motifs). The border is also uncharacteristically wide. The early group of rugs that the design of this piece is based upon derive their name from the painter Hans Holbein the Younger, as a rug of this design appears in his Portrait of George Gisze of 1532. However, early rugs of this design appear in the work of many European artists from the mid 15th until the 17th century, see: Mills, John 'Small Pattern Holbein' Carpets in Western Paintings, Hali, vol.1 no.4, 1978, pp 326-334. Among these are Piero della Francesca, Andrea Mantegna and Domenico Ghirlandaio. Perhaps most famously, an example of a rug of this type appears in a painting, artist unknown, that documents the Somerset Conference of 1604, a peace treaty to negotiate the end of the Anglo-Spanish war. This painting hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. Condition Report: Generally in good pile, and in largely original condition. A small number of small areas of re-piling and repair. Corrosion to charcoal wool, with darkest brown pile mostly lost. Lighter walnut brown also corroded, pile low but mostly extant. Selvages (side cords) not original, and missing in places. Makeup case featuring compartments for powder, lipstick, small brush, and mirror, with inlaid mother of pearl to the exterior and snake style chain. Makeup case measuring approx. 11cm x 8cm.

Selection of items.  To include a Set of Tiffany & Co Sterling Silver Globe Cufflinks, a pair of 9ct Gold Mother of Pearl and Seed Pearl Button Studs, a Vintage Christian Dior Paris Gold Plate and Navy Blue Lacquer Lighter and a three-piece Sterling Silver Dressing Table Vanity Set.  The Sterling Silver Dressing Table Set includes two Engraved Brushes and a Simulated Tortoiseshell Comb.  They are engraved with the hallmarks "B&CO" for W I Broadway & Co, the Anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Lion Passant for Sterling Silver and the date letter "K" for 1959.  The Tiffany & Co Sterling Silver Globe Cufflinks are hallmarked "TIFFANY & CO 925" and also have a set of hallmarks "T&Co" for Tiffany & Co, "925" for Sterling Silver, the Leopard assay mark for London and the date letter "a" for 1956.  Total Gross Weight of the 9ct Gold Mother of Pearl and Seed Pearl Button Studs is approx. 2.4 grams.  Condition: One of the Sterling Silver Brushes is dented.  The lighter isn't working.
