An Edwardian silver table lighter in the form of a 'flaming bomb' or grenade. Hallmarks for William Hutton & Sons Ltd, Sheffield 1901, approx. 12cm high overall (4 3/4 inches, with a removable lead-lined base, approx. 123g of weighable silver (a little under 4 ozs) Condition Report: Overal fair condition for age, general wear and tear commensurate with age and use probably on a regimental table after an evening of good food and wine(?) There are 3-4 dents or shallow creases however the lighter has benn cleaned with something like a brillo pad or wire wool and the suface is now matt rather than polished. Please take this in to account when bidding.
The Overland Monthly, volume 1. Published 1868 by A. Roman and Company. The first volume contains all four of Twain's contributions to this journal, all first printings, which appeared in the first four issues ('By Rail Through France,' 'A Californian Abroad,' 'A Medieval Romance,' and 'Three Italian Cities.') The second issue contains the first printing of Harte's most famous story, 'The Luck of the Roaring Camp. The first one and a half years of this magazine were edited by Bret Harte. Other major contributors include Ina Coolbrith, Charles Warren Stoddard, and Edward Rowland Sill. Bound in brown leather with a lighter brown over covering and corner tabs. The leather is gilt stamped on the covers, spine titles and decorations between ribs with edges a light red tone. Approximate Dimensions:h. 9.25", w. 6.25", d. 1.5"Condition:The covers show little wear with some shelf rubbing showing on the highest parts of the hinge. Original clasped Renaissance wood board binding covered with tooled dark calf with floral impressions which was rebound in the mid to late 19th century onto a lighter brown calf. Spine having 4 ridges. Inside each cover is the remnants of earlier books with much period handwriting.
