Frères Duchène & Comp. A Genève. Rare et insolite montre de gousset semi-squelette à cadran ouvert en or jaune 18K (750) avec automate jacquemart, répétition des quarts et scène érotique dissimulée remontoir à clefFrères Duchène & Comp. As the skill in creating erotic watches developed along with their popularity more complex and highly enameled scenes were created with two or more people in various location and positions; the popularity of the novelty and inventiveness of the watchmakers became their downfall as the detailed enameled figures began to represent members of the church or nobility drawing unwanted attention and leading to the destruction of numerous workshops and watches by law enforcement. Undeterred the practice emerged once again during the late 19th century. The current lot is a fine example of a semi-skeletonised quarter repeating Jacquemart pocket watch with the erotic automaton concealed beneath 6 o'clock. The aperture is opened by a button in the band at 7 which draws back two panels to reveal the lovers. Jacquemart automaton's also known as bellstrikers are mechanised figures of a person striking the hours on a bell with a hammer. They can also be known as a Jack of the Clock or Jack O'Clock. The origin of the word Jacquemart is disputed but thought likely to refer to a tool called a 'Jackie' which was used when building church towers. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Aviation artwork - BRISTOL BRABAZON I - a late 1940s artist's promotional diagrammatic view of the fuselage and apartmentsgouache and airbrush on card, probably used for promotional purposes around the time of the Brabazon's first flight, September 4th, 1949, the watercolour depicting the artist's concept of the luxury Brabazon interior, to include Centre Saloon; Main kitchen and pantry; Ladies powder room and toilet; Lounge and cocktail bar etc., 18 3/8 x 37 7/8in. (46.8 x 96.3cm.); together with a copy of 'The Wonder Book of Aircraft'. (2)* The Brabazon was to be the Palace of the skies, designed to carry just 100 passengers in incredible luxury on two decks of accommodation. However, it was incredibly complex and the projected costs per passenger mile proved uneconomical. After the maiden flight and further appearances at the Farnborough, Heathrow and Paris airshows in 1950-51, no orders were placed for the type and the one and only prototype was scrapped in 1953. In 1942, the British Government commissioned Lord Brabazon of Tara, the first Britain to fly in 1908, to chair a committee to recommend post-war aircraft designs. The committee suggested a series of concepts but two, which were intended to give the lead to British industry for trans-Atlantic flights, were total disasters. The eight-engine Bristol Brabazon and the ten-engine Saunders-Roe Princess flying boat were magnificent in concept but impractical. These designs epitomize the ideal of luxury travel for the privileged few. ** This diagrammatic view of the fuselage and apartments of the Bristol Brabazon I was used on the centre pages, p.72 & p.73 of 'The Wonder Book of Aircraft' by Harry Golding, pub. c.1952.
