Badge. Irish. 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regiment Victorian Officer’s “French pattern” shako plate 1855 pattern. A very fine and rare example in copper gilt, being a crowned eight-pointed star with further gilt mounts comprising a pierced Garter complete with gilt backing slip, within the Garter dead gilt numerals “88”, these with an engine turned finish. Original loops to reverse replaced with crude soldered wires. VGC Note. This particular example was officially shortened for use on the 1861 pattern shako, a rare instance for Line regiments.

A fine quality example, the rectangular gilt back plate with a burnished rim and engine-turned ground, upon this in silver St. Andrew’s Cross; over the cross in gilt a crown over an oval, “The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders”. Within the oval on a raised burnished gilt backing a silver crown over a thistle spray, below the Cross a silver Sphinx on Egypt tablet. Brace of hooks and studs to reverse. VGC Provenance.
