A Second World War RAF Intruder Personal Combat Reportgiven by F/L. K.D Vaughan, Pilot and F/S. R.D McKinnon, Navigator (B Flight, No. 85 Squadron) relating to events on 13th/14th April 1945.Stamped 'HEADQUARTERS ROYAL AIR FORCE SWANNINGTON' and dated 16th April 1945. This incredibly interesting report documents a fight that ensued on a High-level support mission of the bombing attack on Kiel and describes the downing of one He219. Research shows that the German aircraft claimed as destroyed in this report was the one flown by Air-Ace Leutnant Otto Fries during night operations for Axis home defence. The chase described concluded with the right-hand engine of the He219 exploding into flames and following the loss of control of most of the aircraft, Fries jettisoned the aircraft's canopy. His wireless operator Feldwebel Alfred Staffa baled out first and was severely wounded on landing with his parachute. Leutnant Fries could not regain sufficient control of the He 219, which was now burning, so he also ejected and landed, unhurt, by means of his parachute. The He 219 ultimately crashed approximately 3 km south of Hertogenbosch and was destroyed. At the time, this was reputedly only the third such ejection of a pilot during combat known in the world. This was to be one of four times Leutnant Fries was shot down during the war and he is documented as scoring 18 victories in total. The full account on this document reads: GENERAL REPORT.One Mosquito, 85/S., F/L.K.D. Vaughan, Pilot and F/S.R.D. McKinnon, Navigator, was airborne Swannington at 2158 hours 13th April 1945 on High level support of the bomber attack on KIEL. At 0020 hours, 5 to 10 miles west of KIEL a contact was obtained, which resulted in the destruction of a He 219. F/L.Vaughan reports:- "We planned to cross the enemy coast at WESTERHEVER at 2320 hours and then proceed to a point 20 miles S.W of KIEL, which was the target for the main bomber force. We had originally intended to cover the bomber route out from the target area to the enemy coast line for a period of 35 minutes. We were then aiming to do a free lance patrol in the LUNEBURG area. After being on patrol for 40 minutes we were still getting groups of bomber contacts. As there was apparent ground activity with searchlights and ground flashes on the bomber route which were definitely not gun flashes but some sort of indicating aid to the Hun nightfighters, we decided to continue patrolling the same area. However, this area quietened down considerably and after many alterations of height etc., on patrol, at 2020 hours, height 18,000ft, just when our time limit on patrol had expired, my navigator obtained a crossing starboard to port contact at 5 miles range 35 degrees above. We chased our target in a port on to a southerly vector with the range rapidly reducing to 9,000ft and the target losing height at a rather low air speed, 220-230 I.A.S.. The target kept up a continuous weave but settled down at about 10,000ft height. We closed range to 1,000ft but experienced difficulty in getting behind him owing to his weaving activities. I got a visual on a pale blue light. But the aircraft did a peel off to port and range went out to 5,000ft. We followed on A. I. which, incidentally was very ropey, in turns. Again we closed in on the hard weaving target. I got fleeting visuals on bright exhausts at one stage, at about 2,000ft range, but still could not get comfortably settled astern. Three times we closed in to 1,000ft, the target peeling off on every occasion. The blue light was visible on most of these occasions from just astern but I was unable to follow visually owing to the target's activities. We could identify target as a twin engined aircraft on our very few opportunities. On one occasion, my navigator confirmed this with night glasses. On the third occasion that we closed range to 1,000ft, the target, to me anyway, appeared to catch fire underneath the fuselage. I got my navigator's head out of the box to confirm this, and very quickly and brightly he yelled "That's his jet", which jolted me out of my fire theory very quickly. The Target again started one of his routine turns and I immediately pushed the throttles fully open +12 and already using 28,000 revs, and gave a second deflection shot on his jet at about 900ft range. However, this burst produced no strikes, so I got dead astern in the turn and, at 700ft range, fired another burst which caused a large explosion and strikes on his starboard side. I gave him another burst for luck and another explosion appeared on the port side and the E/A burned from wing tip to wing tip, going down in a spin to starboard and hit the deck at 0031 hours in an approximate position 5350N 1000E. From it's general appearance and behaviour, particularly the use of a jet we consider this A/C was a He 219, and we claim it as destroyed. We then set course for base. No Perfectos throughout patrol. The Hun did not seem to have any tail warning device, but was apparently carrying out the usual evasive action". CLAIM: 1 He.219 destroyed. A/C. landed Swannington 0211 hours. Ammunition expended – S.A.P.I – 40, H.E. I – 40. Total 80."

An Important 91hp Corliss & Wheelock Horizontal Steam Engine, built by Crepelle et Garand, Lille, Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle, Paris 1889,the brass maker's plaque engraved Anciens Ateliers LE GAVRIAN, CRÉPELLE & GARAND, Successeurs de V. BRASSEUR, LILLE-FRANCE, *GRAND PRIX* EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE PARIS 1889, MACHINES A VAPEUR CORLISS & WHEELOCK.The blued steel-clad cylinder is 13' bore by 34' stroke, fitted with indicator cocks and elegantly shaped valve spindle support brackets with lubrication plugs. Steam cylinder lubricating oil is fed to the inlet valves by an Automatique twin cylinder ratchet and screw-operated positive displacement pump, Numbered 3010 by Risacher and Herbert Paris, complete with original recharging handle and brass reservoirs.Steam is admitted below the jacketed cylinder by floor-mounted capstan main steam valve. An alternative upper pipe position is provided and blanked off. Exhaust is fed down through the cylinder feet and direct coupled to a long horizontal jet condenser which is fed by a hand lever plug cock with marked brass settings.Very few examples of this valve gear exist today, the connecting rods with fine solid brass bearing ends with adjustable pitch. Two brass connecting rods move curved levers housing cut-off springs, and carry pivoted brass details. These can be disengaged to stop the engine, or brought into contact with the adjustable governor tappets which are actuated directly by the weighted governor with its acorn knop and oil dashpot. The bayonet frame houses a trunk guide with oil reservoirs and drips in which runs a white metalled crosshead fixed to the piston rod with gib and cotter. The barrelled connecting rod with double gib and cottered strapped little end, and a gib and screw cottered boxed big end. A return connecting rod drives a pivoted bellcrank operating the condenser airpump with phumph pipe and twin single-acting condensate return pumps (the engine can be exhausted direct to atmosphere). The main bearings elegantly shaped with wick lubricators cast into the caps. The waisted crankshaft drives the 13-foot diameter two-part flywheel with barring holes and crowned rim.The engine retains its original handrails and stanchions, mounted on a Staffordshire blue brickwork with black and white tiles. There are five different lubricator solutions on the engine, including cylinder lubricating force pump and glass-bowled adjustable drip feeders, one of which supplies the crosshead using a wire brush to wipe a tongue in the middle of the reservoir. Two similar lubricators on the return connecting rod with perforated balls for hand brush contact. The larger end is oiled by a banjo lubricator, and the mains by wick lubricators. The engine weighs approximately sixteen tonnes, and the governor-driven pulley was modified to bring the demonstration revs down to thirty. The engine is bolted down at the crankshaft end, and the cylinder and bayonet frame allowed to expand on cast iron pads at the other. base dimensions 402in x 123in (10.21m x 3.12m); total weight 16 tonsflywheel 156in (3.96m) diameter; weight 4 tons Footnotes:Provenance & Exhibition History:The Exposition Universelle, Paris, France, 1889, where it won First Prize. The Hospital Emile Roux, Brevannes, France, 1889-c.1940.The British Engineerium, Hove, England, 1976 to present.George Henry Corliss (1817-1888) lived and worked in America, his career culminating with his Presidency of the Corliss Steam Engine Company. As designer for that company, he was responsible for a great number of significant innovations and developments in the field of early steam engine designs. The most notable of these was his design for 'Corliss valve gear', which incorporated semi-rotating valves housed within transverse ported tubes, integrally cast within the cylinder casting.A normal single eccentric without expansion valve gear cannot achieve less than 60ut-off. The Wheelock system uses a single eccentric driving a single wrist plate directly coupled to the exhaust valves, and to the inlet valves via sprung rocking arms and dashpots directly controlled by the governor tappets. In this way the governor feedback is immediate and extremely efficient, and a second eccentric is no longer required. The Exposition Universelle was the World's Fair hosted in Paris from May to November 1889. The present engine would have been exhibited in the exhibition's Galerie des Machines, an extraordinary 1,452-long exhibition centre housing hundreds of the leading engines and models of the day. It was for this same exhibition that the Eiffel Tower was first opened. The Fair attracted international acclaim, and was marketed at the time as a celebration of French artistic and technological achievement, marking a century since the French Revolution. Given the central importance of this World Fair, it is particularly notable that the present Lot was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix.Following the closure of the Paris exhibition, this engine was erected at the Hospital Emile Roux in Brevannes, south of Paris, along with a similar engine generating electricity via a long leather belt and weighted jockey wheel. The engine continued to work its 50 KVA generator until approximately 1940, and in 1975 it was excavated and transported to The British Engineerium in England. The Corliss cylinder block, bayonet frame and showcases were positioned by September 1976, then the heaviest engine components were added prior to bolting down. A month later the engine was re-fitted and operational once again, celebrating its first run in its new home on the 25th October 1976.Viewings at the British Engineerium are available by appointment only: please contact scientific@bonhams.com or call +44 (0)207 393 3986 to arrange an appointment. Please note that this Lot is currently located at the British Engineerium in Hove, England.
