J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Arkansas Locomotive" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States Arkansas Commemorative Cover postmarked May 6, 1995. By the 1850s, railroad fever was running high in Arkansas, and within a few years construction began on two railways that would eventually create the "Natural State's" primary transportation system. In 1851, the St. Louis & Iron Mountain was chartered to build southwest from St. Louis. By 1872, its southern extension reached the Missouri-Arkansas border. The Cairo & Fulton, chartered in 1854, also followed a southwesterly route. It stretched across the Mississippi River, making stops in Cairo, Illinois, and Fulton, Arkansas, as it traveled to the Texas-Arkansas border. In 1873, the Cairo & Fulton connected with the Texas & Pacific line at Texarkana, and the following year, on May 6, 1874, it consolidated with the St. Louis & Iron Mountain to form the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railway. This merger produced a 685-mile system that included 195 miles of branches, providing Arkansas with a vital economic link to businesses in both St. Louis and Memphis. A few years later, as part of his grand scheme to create a southwestern system, railroad tycoon Jay Gould acquired the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern, and soon his rail lines, including the Missouri Pacific, dominated traffic between St. Louis and east Texas. Pictured as it appeared in 1890, is the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern's engine No. 399 resting in front of a handsome wooden train station at Little Rock, Arkansas. This 4-4-0 type passenger engine was built by Grant Locomotive Works in 1868. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B15019)

J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "West Virginia Locomotive" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States West Virginia Commemorative Cover postmarked January 29, 1995. West Virginia's introduction to rail transportation was the result of an expansion of the Virginia Central Railroad. The Civil War had halted the progress of the railway to the point that Virginia Central workers were forced to pull up portions of their own track to obtain supplies for the maintenance of other sections. However, by 1865 the entire line was back in service. Three years later, the Virginia Central merged with the Covington & Ohio, becoming the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad (C&O). In 1869 it came under the control of California railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington, builder of both the Central Pacific and Southern Pacific lines. On January 29, 1873, the route from Richmond, Virginia, to the Ohio River (near the West Virginia/Kentucky border) was completed. The western terminus of this route was the newly-formed city of Huntington, named for its founder. During West Virginia's early years of statehood, this railway provided one of the biggest boons to the state's economy. It prompted the mining of coal from the lower walls of the mineral-rich canyon it traversed and ended a century-long search for a more accessible route across southern West Virginia. Pictured on this handsome artwork is C&O engine No. 204. This 2-8-0, known as a "Consolidation" type, was built by Richmond Locomotive in 1890. C&O is now part of CSX Transportation, and its heavy coal trains still rumble over the C&O's original route. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14932)

J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "South Dakota Locomotive" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States South Dakota Commemorative Cover postmarked December 29, 1994. During the late 1800s, the Chicago & North Western Railway reached South Dakota's Black Hills mining region via a subsidiary known as the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley (FE&MV). On December 29, 1980, the line was extended to the city of Deadwood. Founded during the 1876 gold rush, this town was described by 19th-century author J.W. Buel as being inhabited by "rough characters, cut-throats, gamblers and the devil's agents." To better serve this area's mining operations, the FE&MV built 18 miles of narrow-gauge three-foot trackage from Deadwood directly to the mineral excavation sites. Although the depression of the 1890s and the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893 led to a reduction in traffic on the narrow gauge, by the early 20th century the railroad was again prosperous. In 1902, a dual-gauge spur of about two miles was built to Lead, South Dakota, in anticipation of a convention of the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows. The following year the FE&MV was absorbed by the Chicago & North Western Railway, and by 1928 the narrow-gauge line was abandoned. The scene in this painting effectively illustrates the complexity of the railroad system in the Black Hills mining area. The FE&MV's engine No. 212, a rare 4-8-0 type built in 1902 by the Schenectady Works of the American Locomotive Co., is featured on the second tier of a tri-level crossing. A mining company train is shown on the highest trestle while a Deadwood Central train is depicted on the ground level. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14919)

J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Virginia Locomotive" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States Virginia Commemorative Cover postmarked September 3, 1994. On September 3, 1881, the Roanoke Machine Works was chartered by the county of Roanoke, Virginia. Considered to be one of the finest steam locomotive construction shops in America, it was established to build and repair equipment of the Norfolk & Western and Shenandoah Valley railroads. The machine shop contained two monorail cranes designed for hoisting heavy material. They were propelled by a seemingly endless rope that extended the length of the building. Wall-mounted gas jets lit the overall work area, while individual candles were used by those who needed stronger light to perform close work. During the sweltering heat of Virginia's summer months, workers bought their own ice for the drinking water. Curiously, it was believed that the consumption of cold water was detrimental to one's health. Thus, liberal quantities of oatmeal were added to counter any possible "ill effects." A telephone was installed in the watchman's shanty for the sole purpose of contacting help in the event that a worker was injured. This was another "luxury" paid for by the Roanoke Machine Works' employees. Other operations included in the complex were the foundry, boiler shop, smith shop and, in later years, a chemical laboratory. By 1936, the Works was ranked among the top railroad machine shops in America. This handsome artwork features the No. 117. In September 1884, this 2-8-0 type freight engine was the first locomotive built in the shops. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14855)
