A 19th Century Russian niello silver cigarette box, Moscow 1862(?), maker's mark AC (possibly for Aleksei Stepanov), assay master Viktor Savinkov, the lid decorated with a view of the Kremlin with sunburst, with bridge, boat and river in the foreground, surrounded by a foliate wreath, the reverse with engine turned decoration and vacant shield, 6.5ozt approx., 12.5cm x 7.5cm.
A silver hip flask by James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield 1917, monogrammed, 14cm high, together with a silver cedar lined cigarette box, by William Neal Ltd, Birmingham 1932 inscribed Mixed Doubles, Wexford 1933, 11cm wide, a silver magnifying glass, by Deakin & Francis Ltd, Birmingham 1910, two engine turned silver cigarette cases, Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co., London 1928 and J.H.W., Birmingham 1929 (monogrammed), another plain but with initials B.B. by Sampson Mordan & Co., London date mark rubbed, and an Indian niello sterling cigarette box decorated with elephants, 38ozt total weight. DIESEL RUDOLF: (1858-1913) German Inventor & Mechanical Engineer, famous for his invention of the diesel engine. An extremely rare A.N., unsigned (although using his printed name as a form of signature), to both sides of his personal printed visiting card, Munich, n.d., to 'Dear honoured Privy Councillor', in German. Diesel writes, in full, 'My dear wife would like to thank you deeply for the wonderful flowers. We were delighted to make your acquaintance and regret the fact that we were not able to say goodbye but do hope to meet again soonest. I am very much looking forward to advising your son'. Autographs of Diesel are rare in any form as a result of his untimely death at the age of 55 in somewhat mysterious and unexplained circumstances. About EX Diesel married his wife, referred to in the present note, in 1883. Martha Flasche was an attractive blue-eyed German who worked as a governess for a wealthy Parisian family. Shortly after Diesel's mysterious disappearance, Martha opened a bag that her husband had given to her just before his ill-fated voyage, with directions that it should not be opened until the following week. She discovered 200,000 German marks in cash ($1.2 million today) and a number of financial statements indicating that their bank accounts were virtually empty
WRIGHT & LAWRANCE: WRIGHT ORVILLE (1871-1948) American Aviator who, with his brother Wilbur, invented and built the world's first successful airplane, making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight on 17th December 1903 & LAWRANCE CHARLES (1882-1950) American Aeronautical Engineer, an early proponent of air-cooled aircraft engines. A good vintage signed sepia 10 x 8 photograph by both Wright and Lawrance individually, the image depicting the two men standing alongside each other in half length poses. Signed by each with their names alone in fountain pen ink to clear areas at the base of the image. Some very slight surface creasing and minor signs of former mounting to the verso as a result of previous framing, about VG Lawrance's design of the J-1 air-cooled aircraft engine was the direct ancestor of the extremely successful Wright Whirlwind series of engines. In May 1923 Lawrance's company was acquired by Wright Aeronautical, with Lawrance himself retained as Vice-President, becoming the company's President just two years later.
SCOTT & BLACK: Charles Scott (1903-1946) English Aviator & Tom Black (1899-1936) English Aviator. Winners of the MacRobertson Air Race in 1934. Signed vintage Tuck postcard by both Scott and Black individually. The image depicting the de Havilland Comet aircraft 'Grosvenor House', below two photographs of Black and Scott. Signed by both Scott and Black in bold black fountain pen ink, with their names alone, to a clear area of the verso. With a small crease to one corner, otherwise VGThe MacRobertson Trophy Air Race (also known as the London to Melbourne Air Race) took place October 1934 as part of the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. Scott and Black completed the race in a time of less than 3 days, despite flying the last stage with one engine throttled back because of an oil pressure indicator giving a faulty low reading.
WHITTLE FRANK: (1907-1996) English Royal Air Force Officer, inventor of the jet engine. Signed commemorative cover depicting a colour image of a Hawker Hurricane in flight and with an inset portrait of Squadron Leader James Lacey. Signed ('F Whittle') in black ink, with his name alone, to a clear area at the foot of the cover. Also signed by James Lacey (1917-1989) British World War II Ace (28 victories), the second highest scoring RAF Fighter Pilot of the Battle of Britain. Post marked at RAF Stanmore Park on 23rd September 1978. Together withThomas Sopwith(1888-1989) English Aviation Pioneer. Signed commemorative cover depicting the Sopwith Camel and with an inset portrait of Sopwith. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink to a clear area of the cover and dated 1976 in his hand. A Geo. VI silver pocket cigarette case of rectangular form, having engine turned decoration and monogrammed to the corner L.C.R.E. maker D.R.H., Birmingham, 1945, 14 x 9cmLIONEL CHARLES RENWICK EMMETT. (1913-1996) - competed in several Olympic Games as a member of the Indian hockey team. As a qualified doctor, he served in the Indian Army Medical Corps and was awarded the M.B.E. in 1945 when in the rank of Temporary Major, he was later promoted to Lieut' Colonel and awarded the Military Cross. Emmett also held a licence to shoot rogue tigers and elephants; included in this lot is a photograph of Emmett with a tiger he killed titled "The Man-eater of Mariani," together with a typed account of the killing.
Rolls Royce Experimental Silver Wraith, 41EX long wheel base, formally a Rolls Royce experimental vehicle at the Research Department in 1954, used to test developments in innovation until approximately 1957 and then fully updated to the latest specifications with the current engine, power steering and air conditioning. This is a very unique and special car with full history from the day it entered the experimental department of Rolls Royce. It is the only Silver Wraith with this history and the first to have air conditioning and power steering.
