Case: 18ct gold, gold cuvette, translucent pink enamel over an engine-turned ground, diamond to the centre, no. 426030. Signed: unsigned, case stamped W&D. Dimensions: diameter 28mm. Together with a 9ct gold chain. £400-£600 --- Condition Report Movement: running at the time of cataloguing. Dial: tarnishing and slight scuff marks to the centre. Case: scuffs throughout, chip to the enamel near the hinge. Gross weight: 19.7gms. An early 19th century French gold and enamel snuff box by Christian Petschler, of rectangular form with canted corners, the hinged cover centred with a diaperwork engine-turned panel within blue enamel decorated border of urns, flowers, stiff leaf and laurel, the sides depicting artichokes against a stippled ground, lozenge maker’s mark to inner rim and French Third Standard guarantee mark for 18ct gold (in use between 1819-1838), length 8.5cm. £4,000-£6,000 --- For a similar example of this maker’s work, see Christie’s sale: French and English Furniture from a Distinguished Private Collection, New York, 24 October 2017, Sale No. 14971, Lot 3. Condition Report The box is in very good condition, decoration crisp. A few very tiny nicks to the dark blue enamel work, visible under 10 x magnification. Clearly struck lozenge maker’s mark to outer rim. Gross weight 144.9gm.
