Lot 317

A fine Regency Gothic Revival ormolu carriage timepiece Dwerrihouse and Fletcher, London, circa 1830 The four pillar eight-day single chain fusee movement with vertical English lever escapement regulated by sprung monometallic balance mounted on the arched backplate over engraved signature Dwerrihouse & Fletcher, LONDON, the 2.5 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with engine-turned centre and delicate blued steel moon hands set within convex glazed milled bezel and engine-turned gilt mask, the ogee-top case with leaf cast carrying handle repeating lancet-shaped panel chased decoration fronted by shallow gothic arch with leafy crest and quatrefoil panel to apex over cluster columns with acanthus capitals flanking dial, the sides with bevel-glazed windows, the rear matching the front but with engine-turned gilt break-arch door, the base with shallow skirt slightly projecting at the angles and leaf cast bun feet, 18cm, (7ins) high including handle. The operational dates for the partnership between Dwerrihouse and John John Fletcher appear not to be recorded in the usual sources however John Fletcher was a chronometer maker and a maker to the Admiralty He was a finisher and a springer which meant that he was highly skilled in his work. Later Fletcher bought out Dwerrihouse of 27 Davies St, Berkeley Square hence timepieces signed Fletcher, late Dwerrihouse & Carter are also known.

Lot 364

A fine French Empire small ormolu vase timepiece Unsigned, early 19th century The circular single train movement with anchor escapement regulated by small lenticular bob pendulum with silk suspension, the circular silvered Roman numeral dial with engine-turned centre and steel moon hands within repeating lappet leaf bezel, the pedestal vase-shaped case of oval section incorporating naturalistic leafy stems applied with polychrome porcelain flower heads issuing from a dished patinated bronze top panel over flared lappet leaf cast rim, the sides with foliate trails and the lower section of the body applied with alternating laurel and honeysuckle designs, on lappet leaf and acanthus cast convex foot applied to plinth base fronted with cornucopia and fruiting vine decorated panel over leaf cast moulded skirt with toupe feet, 37cm (14.5ins) high.

Lot 329

An unusual French gilt brass and polished wood carriage clock with push-button repeat and alarm Unsigned, late 19th century The two train eight-day gong striking movement with silvered platform lever escapement regulated by sprung split bimetallic balance and alarm sounding on the same gong, the circular silvered Roman numeral dial with rosette engraved centre and blued steel spade hands set within engine-turned mask incorporating conforming alarm setting dial to lower margin, the bevel glazed case with wood inset substantial hinged carrying handle over gilt top plate incorporating escapement aperture and repeat button over complex wood top mouldings and alternating wood/gilt brass reeded corner uprights divided by further brass plates, the rear with door, on ogee moulded skirt base terminating with brass plate and shallow pad feet, 16cm (6.25ins) high. The unusual combination of gilt brass and polished wood for the case, coupled with the engine-turned and engraved silvered dial are features that were almost certainly employed to ensure that the current lot appealed to the English market. The fact that the backplate is also annotated with the various functions in English would confirm that the clock was made for export to the United Kingdom.

Lot 320

A rare French gilt brass carriage clock with two-plane 'chaffcutter' escapement Paul Garnier, Paris, circa 1840 The eight-day two train movement with two-plane 'chaffcutter' escapement and three-arm monometallic balance set between the plates and striking the hours on a bell mounted to the backplate signed on an applied plaque PAUL GARNIER, A PARIS towards upper left hand corner and stamped P.G., Brevete over serial number 514 to centre, the rectangular engine-turned silvered brass Roman numeral dial with radial design to centre within chapter ring and 'watered-silk' infill incorporating vacant signature plaque to lower margin and with Breguet style blued steel moon hands, the gilt brass one-piece caddy moulded case with hinged slender baton handle above upward sliding front glass for winding, on cavetto moulded skirt base with inset rounded angles, (in neglected, unrestored condition), 14.5cm (5.75ins) high excluding handle. Paul Garnier is recorded in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS as born 1801 and receiving Silver Medals in the Paris Exhibitions of 1827, 34, and 39; and gold medals in 1844 and 49. He worked from various addresses at Rue Taitbout, Paris and died in 1869 leaving the business to his son of the same name who was still exhibiting carriage clocks in the Paris Exhibition of 1889. Paul Garnier is generally credited for being the first maker to essentially standardise the 'petit pendule portative' which was in effect to become the prototype for the archetypal French carriage clock. The current lot with its 'chaffcutter' escapement, engine turned 'watered-silk' dial and squat one-piece case with wooden block insert to underside can be firmly identified as a 'Series I' carriage clock by Garnier as identified by Allix (see Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS pages 56-7).

Note: A Steeple engine is so called because of the resemblance of the piston rod extension to a church steeple. Steeple engines were an early attempt to get away from the beam engine arrangement. The first steeple engines were designed by Napier in the 1830s for use in paddle boats. The cylinder went in the bottom of the boat, the crankshaft was at deck level, and the upper section was housed in a deck house.

The model finished in black paintwork, mounted on hardwood plinth measuring 24cm x 24cm. Overall height 24cm. Note: This engine was patented in 1848 by two Manchester engineers - Joseph Simpson and James Alfred Shipton. It is a rotary steam engine, but it still uses connecting rods to drive the crankshaft. The 'cylinder' or perhaps better described as a chamber, sits on a table carried on four short columns. Inside the chamber is a piston lying on its side. Passing through the piston is an eccentric shaft, connected to the outer ends of the shaft are cranks. Connecting rods drop from these cranks to the crankshaft carried on bearings fixed to the base. Steam enters the chamber through a balanced slide valve and impinges on the side of the piston rolling it around inside the chamber.
