Two Third Reich Kriegsmarine Wehrpass - Helmut and Heinz Fries. Brothers from a traditional German Naval Family. Heinz, the elder, served with a Coastal Patrol Unit and had accompanied a patrol vessel which had been stripped down into transportable sections and overlanded to the Black Sea. After some time on patrol duties, the vessel sank in a severe storm and only a few of the crew survived. Heinz Fries and a few of his comrades managed to get ashore, where Heinz proceeded on foot to try and get help. Unfortunately the weather was atrocious and he died from exposure. Papers relating to his death and funeral in Turkey are enclosed. Helmut the younger brother had meanwhile joined the Kreigsmarine and had been drafted into the Submarine Service at Bochum where U-232, a newly completed craft was waiting to be commissioned. Fries` father, having just lost his elder son, appealed directly to Admiral Raeder, with whom he had served, and asked that his son be transferred to a shore establishment. After some delay Raeder agreed that Helmut be transferred ashore, but by the time his father had received the letter, U-232 had been commissioned and sailed on her first patrol into the Atlantic. Whilst re-charging in the Bay of Biscay she was spotted by a Liberator of 2nd. Squadron, 480th Anti Submarine Group, U.S.A.A.F. Whilst pressing home her attack the Liberator was severely damaged by Flak from U-232, but persisted in her attack and on its second run in sank the submarine with depth charges. There were no survivors.... Documents, Personal Photographs Nr.26186. Heinz Fries, Corporal Navy. Minesweeper Service. 1) Bochum Military Recruiting Office covering letter, 22-5-43. Sent with the Wehrpass of Heinz to his father. 2) Letter by the CO. of the 30.R.Flott. to his father, 27-6-43. Confirming that Heinz was killed when his boat sank near the Turkish coast. Signed by the substitute CO. of the 30.R.Flott., Korvettenkapitan Eduard von Helleparth. 3) Istanbul German Protestant Church death records extracts, 2-8-43. Confirming that Heinz died 27-1-43 of frost bite and is buried at an Istanbul cemetery. 4) Covering letter by the CO. of the 30.R.Flott. to his father, 15-9-43. Sent with several documents regarding the burial of Heinz, and the position of his grave. Signed by the CO. of the 30.R.Flott, Fregattenkapitan Paul Schroder. 5) Covering letter by the CO. of the 30.R.Flott. to his father, 20-9-43. Sent with the burial speech of the German Navy attache of the German embassy in Turkey. 6) Burial speech by the Navy attache Vice-Admiral von der Marwitz, 27-7-43. With full details of the events that caused the death of Heinz and two of his comrades. Very interesting! 7) Burial speech by a protestant chaplain. 8) Report regarding the reburial in Istanbul of Heinz and two of his comrades. 9) Drawing of the position of his grave at the Istanbul Ferikoy cemetery. 10) Fieldpost envelopes, sent to his family when serving with the Donau-Flott, in Rumania. 11) Four photos, two of which of his grave. 12) Wehrpass, 17-5-40. Born January 1922. Volunteer. January 1941 he joined the Navy. During his training he served February-May 1941 aboard the light Cruiser `Nurnberg`. May 1942 he was transferred to the Donau-Flott., a unit of small river and coastal minesweepers and patrol boats, based in Rumania (Constanza) and operating on the Black Sea. Heinz served aboard a small minesweeper with a crew of 7. Although the June 1943 letter by his CO. and a Wehrpass entry (page 34) suggest that he drowned when his boat sank off the Turkish coast, the burial speech by the German Navy attache reveals what really happened; early January 1943 the small minesweeper (crew of 7) aboard which Heinz served, was ordered to sail to a Russian harbour occupied by the German Army. Soon after leaving port, the boat sustained serious engine damage due to which the boat got out of control. For 20 days the boat drifted on the Black Sea in terrible weather conditions and the crew weakened due to lack of food and drinking water. 27-1-43 the boat struck a rock near the Turkish coast and sank. Although very weak, all 7 crew members managed to get ashore alive. The 4 weakest found refuge in a shed while the 3 strongest men (amongst which was Heinz) tried to reach a nearby light house to get help. These three men all perished in a raging snow storm. The next day their bodies were found by local civilians and the 4 other crew members were found alive. The three perished men were buried locally and July 1943 reburied with full military honours at an Istanbul cemetery.
