A full size museum fibreglass model of John Lethbridge's 'Diving Engine':, the simulated coopered barrel with window, containing mannequin with arms protruding through leather sleeves, simulated lead weights to exterior, 195cm high. *Notes- John Lethbridge was born in Newton Abbot, Devon, England in 1676. He was an unsuccessful merchant with seven children, desperate to find a means of retrieving the family fortune. At the age of 40 he dug a pond in the orchard of his back garden. In it he experimented diving in a sealed barrel, and found he could remain submerged for half an hour. He became so successful at using it, that in 1715 he launched his 'Diving Engine' which was a new barrel, constructed by a cooper in London. He was requested to salvage wrecks by the English and Dutch East India Companies, subsequently successfully recovering gold and silver in many places worldwide. * see pages 190-191, vol 2, 'Diving Helmets and Equipment Through The Ages'.
