A full size museum fibreglass model of John Lethbridge's 'Diving Engine':, the simulated coopered barrel with window,containing mannequin with arms protruding through leather sleeves, simulated lead weights to exterior, 195cm high. *Notes- John Lethbridge was born in Newton Abbot, Devon, England in 1676. He was an unsuccessful merchant with seven children,desperate to find a means of retrieving the family fortune. At the age of 40 he dug a pond in the orchard of his back garden. In it he experimented diving in a sealed barrel, and found he could remain submerged for half an hour. He became so successful at using it, that in 1715 he launched his 'Diving Engine' which was a new barrel, constructed by a cooper in London. He was requested to salvage wrecks by the English and Dutch East India Companies, subsequently successfully recovering gold and silver in many places worldwide. * see pages 190-191, vol 2, 'Diving Helmets and Equipment Through The Ages'.

First work the first Italian translation of Greek mathematician and engineer Hero (or Heron) of Alexander's Pneumatics, which describes his various mechanical inventions including the siphon, fire-engine, water-organ and other steam, air and water driven devices. The translator, Alessandro Giorgi, was the court mathematician to the Duke of Urbino, the dedicatee of the book. (1)
