John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "The Toronto Locomotive" Signed lower right. Oil on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Toronto stamp issued March 10, 1983. Dodging the snorting locomotive's bursts of steam, crowds of passengers board the long line of cars. The conductor calls out a last warning to late arrivals ... and dense clouds of black, murky smoke belch out of the cone-shaped stack. The great engine begins its rhythmic pant and chugging motion, that gradually swell to a quickened roar. Beyond the town lies the open country, where, gathering speed, the locomotive comes alive with power. With a long trailing whistle, the steam engine signals the train's departure into the Canadian West. Such was the scene from an era long ago ... when the first Canadian-built steam locomotive -- the Toronto -- hauled passengers on the Ontario, Simcoe & Huron Union Railway. Built in 1853, by the James Good Foundry in Toronto, Ontario, the Toronto was a thirty ton, wood-fired steam engine. This historic engine began its career as a passenger locmotive, providing fast and comfortable transportation to people traveling across Canada. Eventually, the Toronto hauled freight as well as passengers. In 1881, the Northern Railway made an important gauge change which made the Toronto obsolete. Her operators felt it was more expedient to scrap the engine than to change its gauge. Image Size: 13.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 19.75 x 17.5 in. Unframed. (B08296)

John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "Steamboat Washington (1816)" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Steamboat Washington stamp issued March 3, 1989. When steamboats arrived on the Mississippi, it soon became evident that they would have to evolve to meet the requirements of the river in order to be of any use. What was needed was a steamboat that would draw less water and move on the water instead of through it. The craft would need a wide, shallow hull, with heavy boilers and machinery on top of the hull rather than inside it. Captain Henry Shreve took an important step toward building such a steamboat in 1816 with the Washington. Shreve built a deck over the hull and placed the heavy boilers on this deck, and replaced the bulky, low-pressure engine with a new, high-pressure engine. Shreve also got rid of the heavy condenser that allowed the same water to be used over and over again, seeing no need to conserve water while floating on a whole river of it. Passenger accommodations were put on yet a second deck, above the boilers. The Washington could make the trip from New Orleans to Louisville in twenty-five days, an amazing feat in her time. For all her success, the Washington also had tragedy. An explosion on board during her maiden voyage blew Captain Shreve and most of his crew overboard, killing thirteen people. The captain survived to rebuild his steamboat, and the success of the Washington spurred design development. Soon other steamboats were built using the innovations she had pioneered. If any craft could be called "the mother of western steamboats," it would be Captain Shreve's Washington. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 18 in. Unframed. (B11902)

Mark Schuler (American, B. 1951) "First Landing on Mars 1976" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c First Landing On Mars stamp issued November 24, 1989. America's Viking Space Program to Mars held the entire world in suspense. For almost a year, the sparkling Viking I spacecraft, followed closely by its identical twin, Viking II, winged toward Mars nearly half a billion miles away. For the scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, who were the mission planners, the suspense escalated when Viking entered orbit. Viking's approach photographs of the Martian surface had revealed disquieting geologic features where the spacecraft was scheduled to land. Etched tablelands and deep craters -- clear evidence that Mars had once seen water -- presented all kinds of landing difficulties. A rock only a foot high could puncture the electronics-laden belly of Viking's Lander. On July 20, 1976 at 12:47 a.m. Pasadena time -- seven years to the day after Apollo II's Eagle had landed on the moon -- flight controllers ordered the Viking Lander, an awkward looking bird about the size of a jeep, to separate from the Orbiter and begin a thirty-minute engine burn that would take it out of orbit. Then at 4:13 Mars time, the Lander touched down on a rocky, rolling Martian plain, just missing a large fatal boulder. It took nineteen minutes for the news to travel through space from Mars to JPL in Pasadena. Suddenly, wild whoops filled Mission Control. Within an hour, the Lander's first picture from Mars' surface began to form, one strip at a time ... and the first triumphant exploration of Mars had begun. Image Size: 12 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 20 in. Unframed. (B12183)

Robert Seabeck (Wyoming, B. 1945) "1903 Model a Roadster" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60c 1903 Model A Roadster stamp issued June 4, 1996. In 1903, Ford Motor Company produced its first automobile -- the Model A Roadster. A simple, two-seat runabout with a 72-inch wheelbase, the Model A featured a 100.5-cubic-inch, opposed-twin engine that developed eight horsepower at 1,000 rpm. The Model A sold for $850 and had a planetary transmission with two forward speeds. For $100 more a detachable rear tonneau, with two-person seating and back door access, was included. The Model A had a right-hand steering wheel, as opposed to the tiller used to steer earlier automobiles, including Ford's 1896 Quadricycle. The standard color for the Model A was bright red with black fenders. A small carriage step was used to load passengers into this high profile automobile. The Model A could reach speeds of 30 mph and was proclaimed to be "the most perfect machine on the market." Image Size: 7.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 15 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B15398)

Barry Wilkinson (British, B. 1923) "Monaco -- 1929 Bugatti Type 35B" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood Europa Cover for the Monaco 3,00 Europa stamp issued May 10, 1984. The idea of a "Grand Prix" was introduced by the French in 1906. It was to become the most prestigious form of motor racing ever devised. With a formally laid-out course and spectators restricted in enclosures, the Grand Prix was unique in that it tested cars on ordinary roads, avoiding artificially constructed track. In 1929, Antony Noghes of the Soci?t? des Bains de Mer of Monaco joined with the Automobile Club de Monaco to found the Monaco Grand Prix -- the most durable and romantic of all Grand Prix events. The three kilometer circuit was the first "round-the-houses" route. And the star of that race was none other than the Bugatti Type 35B. Created by Ettore Bugatti -- said to be one of the greatest makers of racing cars ever -- the Type 35B was an elegant, finely proportioned vehicle. Its chassis was called "a masterpiece of design, the depth swelling out from the delicate front spring supports to meet the varying stresses, then tapering down again at the rear, while it conforms to the body shape." Inside, the 35's were powered by the Bugatti straight eight single overhead camshaft engine while twin carburetors fed the angular powerpack. The artwork depicts a recreation of the first Monaco Grand Prix, won by W. Grover Williams driving a Type 35B Bugatti. The car -- with its pointed tail and familiar horseshoe radiator -- was destined to become the most prolific race winner of the 1924-1939 era. Image Size: 10.75 x 9 in. Overall Size: 13 x 11.5 in. Unframed. (B08907)

Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "LB-5 Pirate" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c LB-5 Pirate stamp issued November 1, 1996. The Huff-Daland LB-5 Pirate, with modifications to the tail, engine and wing, over its service life proved to be the mainstay of the U.S. Army bomber force during the budget-lean years of the late 1920s. Image Size: 16.5 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B13747)

Lot 2054

A George III Gold and Enamel Scent-Bottle, Almost Certainly Incuse Maker's Mark IH or JH, London, Circa 1770, pear-shaped and with screw cover, overall enamelled in green, blue and white on an engine-turned ground, with blue glass stopper, in fitted shagreen case, the scent-bottle 3.5cm high, gross weight 5dwt (8gr), the case 4.5cm high There is some question as to the exact origin of objects such as the present scent-bottle. For example a scent-bottle similarly wrought and enamelled to the one offered here was sold from the Joyce Paretti collection by John Nicholson's auctioneers, 14 December 2017, lot 1528 as Louis XVI. The presence of incuse initials underneath the present example, almost certainly a maker's mark, suggest that it at least is of London manufacture, rather than being French. Arthur Grimwade records a series of incuse maker's marks in London Goldsmiths 1697-1837 Their Marks and Lives, London, 1990, pp.287-332, though sadly images of the marks are not provided, thus making it impossible to compare the marks on the present scent-bottle to known marks. That said he does note that incuse marks, those '... struck directly into the metal in intaglio without a surrounding punch.' were mostly used by watchcase makers or gold workers pre-1773 (op cit., p. 287). As noted above the incuse marks are not illustrated by Grimwade but there are various marks recorded as both IH and JH. A compelling candidate for the goldsmith whose mark appears on the scent-flask, is John Harvey of 54 Snow Hill who entered his mark as a gold-worker on 22 October 1773 (op cit., p 303). The John Harvey in question is the third smallworker of that name to have entered at mark with the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths', the two others probably his father and grandfather respectively. His father was probably the John Harvey who entered a mark as a smallworker in partnership with Anne Harvey in 1759 with his grandfather entering his first mark, also as a smallworker, in 1738.
