*Broadside. View of the awful Conflagration at the Tower of London, October 31st 1841, and Immense loss of National Property. From a Drawing taken on the spot by an Eminent Artist, published John Fairburn, 1841, woodcut illustration with contemporary hand colouring, above four columns of descriptive text, a few repaired marginal closed tears, strengthened on verso with archival tissue, 470 x 370 mm Fairburn was a prolific pubisher of popular street literature though this broadside is not listed by COPAC or WORLDCAT.On the evening of 30th October 1841 the Bowyer Tower caught fire. The castle had nine hand-operated fire engines but there was only sufficient water for one of them so very little was achieved and the flames spread rapidly. The fire-officer in charge then called the London Fire Engine Establishment and as there was by this time a large crowd, orders were given that no-one should be allowed to approach the Tower too closely. Sadly this order was obeyed to the letter and the fireman were kept away until it was too late to prevent the destruction of the tower. (1)

A 1946 Railton Straight Eight saloon, coachwork by Whittingham & Mitchell, registration number 308 UXP, chassis number CHH/745434, engine number R7945, black. This possibly unique saloon bodied Railton was constructed after WWII on a pre war rolling chassis mated to the Whittingham & Mitchell coach built body. The Railton has a comprehensive and well documented history and is well known within Railton circles. Originally registered with registration MMG 91, the Railton was formerly owned by the Chairman and founding member of Railton Owner's Club, Mr Alan Nicholls. It would subsequently pass into the ownership of his son. There are numerous references and images of the Railton during to Mr Nicholls custodianship contained within the history file. In recent years the Railton has formed part of a West Country collection. The vendor has undertaken some restoration including rebuilding the straight eight engine, which now runs with Evans Waterless coolant, retrimmed the interior in brown leather and rechromed the door furniture. According to the Railton Owner's Club this is one of only six Railtons built after hostilities ceased, with this example having what is believed to be the only Whittingham & Mitchell coachwork. With its close association with some of the most influential club members, this Railton offers an excellent opportunity to acquire a unique car. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See front cover and other illustrations
