1910 SIGNED DINNER MENU CARD TO COMMEMORATE THE BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION & THE DEPARTURE OF THE TERRA NOVA the cover printed with 'Complimentary Dinner, Capt. Scott CVO RN and officers of the 'Terra Nova'. To be held at the Royal Hotel on Monday 13th June, 1910 at 6.30pm sharp, given by members of the commercial community of Cardiff, Chairman: Trevor S Jones, President of the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce'. The front then signed by Capt. Scott and fellow expedition crew members including Teddy Evans, Edgar Evans, Herbert Ponting, Robert Forde etc. The interior with the banqueting details and verso with toasts. Two days after this dinner a large, excited crowd cheered the Terra Nova as she departed Roath Basin in Cardiff's 'Tiger Bay' with the doomed British Antarctic Expedition starting its race for the South Pole. TheTerra Novahad arrived in Cardiff five days earlier to finish preparations for the voyage and to take on fuel. 300 tons of Crown Patent Fuel, 100 tons of steam coal and 500 gallons of engine and lamp oil were donated by Welsh coal companies. All the cooking utensils were given by the Welsh Tin Plate Company of Llanelli and even Scott's sleeping bag was bought with funds raised by the County School in Cardigan. In addition to support in kind, a further £2,500 was raised in Cardiff, more than from any other city. The dinner at the Royal Hotel in St Mary's Street, Cardiff, will have been as much a thank you to the business people of the city as it was a commemoration for the imminent departure. The Cardiff business community played a crucial role in fund-raising and raising sponsorship and in the provision of dock facilities. In recognition of the Welsh support for the expedition, Cardiff was designated the Terra Nova's home port, and it was to Bute Dock that she returned at the end of the expedition on 14 June 1913. In June 1909 William Davies, editor of theWestern Mail, met with the young naval officer Lieutenant E.R.G.R. Evans, who was planning his own Antarctic expedition. Davies was very keen on supporting what he initially saw as a Welsh National Antarctic Expedition — Evans's grandfather was probably from Cardiff — and thought that there would be support for such a project from Cardiff businesses.Soon afterwards, Evans learned of Scott's planned expedition and joined him as second-in-command, bringing with him the support of the editor of theWestern Mailand the prospect of Welsh sponsorship. Davies was instrumental not only in rallying business and public support in Wales for Scott's expedition, but in persuading his compatriot, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, David Lloyd George, to provide a government grant of £20,000. Arguably, without the influence of Davies, the support of theWestern Mailand the Welsh shipowners, Scott's expedition would not have left in time to reach the Pole in 1912. There was another Evans in theTerra Nova's crew, Petty Officer Edgar Evans from Rhossili, Gower. He had been to Antarctica with Scott on hisDiscoveryexpedition of 1901-4 and was chosen by Scott to be a member of his polar party on the 1910-12 expedition. Evans was the first to die on the return march from the South Pole. Captain Scott's links with Cardiff are commemorated by the lighthouse erected in 1915 in Roath Park Lake and the bronze plaque of 1916 on the staircase in City Hall. In June 2003 a commemorative sculpture was unveiled in Cardiff Bay.The farewell dinner was hosted within the ‘Alexandra Room’ of the Royal Hotel in Cardiff, and a memorial dinner for Captain Scott was held at the hotel three years later. The room is now named the ‘Captain Scott Room’ in his honour and an annual dinner of commemoration is held by the Captain Scott Society on the anniversary of his farewell meal.Provenance: obtained by Colonel Joseph Edward Crawshay Partridge who will have been in attendance, bears his signature, by descent

‡ GEORGE CHAPMAN (1908-1993) fine and large exhibition quality oil on canvas - 'Church and Mine' with St Davids church at Hopkinstown, near Pontypridd, signed and dated '57, 118 x 146cmsNote by Professor Robert Meyrick: when George Chapman encountered the Rhondda Valley in 1953, he ‘got a fantastic shock.’ It was ‘quite unlike anything I’d seen in my life before,’ he remarked in a BBC television documentary about his work. Chapman had long struggled to find a meaningful subject or a personal vision. The Rhondda finally gave him an object and a purpose. ‘Here, in these valleys,’ he continued, ‘I would find the material that would perhaps make me a painter at last. I was so excited about the whole place, and so nervous too about the tremendous possibilities of the subject.’About this time, Chapman was reading William Faulkner’s novels. As he recalled, Faulkner ‘deals with a particular locality in America, and I began to wonder whether I couldn’t do a similar thing. Whether I couldn’t paint a sort of visual novel of the mining valleys,’ to concentrate ‘entirely on the life that is going on around there, and describe everything that they are doing.’ Over the next fifteen years, Chapman produced hundreds of paintings, drawings and etchings portraying communities across the south Wales coalfields. It was for him a period of critical acclaim and financial success. He staged solo exhibitions at the Piccadilly Gallery and Zwemmer Gallery in London, the Bear Lane Gallery, Oxford and the King Street Gallery, Cambridge, which garnered widespread media attention. From his home at Great Bardfield in Essex, Chapman travelled to the valleys in his Volkswagen T1 campervan. He stayed there for days. When it rained, he remained in the driver’s seat with his drawing board resting on the steering wheel. He returned to Essex each time with ‘20-30 drawings’ that he regarded as ‘notes from which to make paintings.’ Chapman had initially trained as a graphic designer in the 1930s. At Shell Mex, BP and London Transport he worked alongside Paul Nash, John Piper, Graham Sutherland, and Edward Bawden. In 1937, however, he gave up his prosperous career and a comfortable lifestyle to retrain as a painter at the Royal College of Art and Slade School. Yet the strong sense of design that he developed as a poster artist never left him. In Church and Mine, he delights in the patterns made by the tombstones, architectural details of the church, colliery winding gear, and the slag heaps silhouetted as light breaks and heavy rainclouds clear. The visual drama of dark wet days in the steep-sided valleys constantly appealed to him.Speaking of Church and Mine to broadcaster Huw Wheldon in 1961, Chapman explained ‘there’s a lovely old cemetery […] right by the railway. Trains are passing by all the time. In the cemetery there’s a charming old mock-Gothic church. The whole thing has a rather romantic air about it […] and a sense of drama.’ The church featured in the painting is St David’s at Hopkinstown, on the outer edge of Pontypridd. Erected in 1896, it was designed in the Early English style by Cardiff-based ecclesiastical architect E. M. Bruce Vaughan (1856-1919). Rising above the Victorian graveyard is the double-bell gable west elevation of the church. A copper-domed Taff Vale Railway steam engine pulls its heavy convoy of wagons laden with freshly-hewn coal between colliery and washery, and to Cardiff Docks beyond. On the other side of the tracks stand the pithead winding gear of Ty Mawr colliery and the chimney of its coke ovens.Church and Mine featured in an episode devoted to George Chapman in the seminal BBC TV arts series Monitor. Directed by David Jones and produced by Huw Wheldon, it was showcased at the Venice Film Festival in 1961. The painting was shown alongside location footage of the graveyard and locomotive. Chapman later gifted the painting to his friend Alick Potter (1912-2000) – founder, Head of Department and Professor of Architecture at the University of Khartoum in Sudan, and later Professor of Architecture at Queen’s University, Belfast. It hung in the study of Potter’s home at Pennant near Aberaeron. Their friendship was one of the reasons why the Chapmans relocated from Norfolk to Aberaeron in 1964. Church and Mine was shown at Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s 1989 retrospective exhibition, ‘George Chapman: A Welsh Story.’ On Potter’s death in 2000, it was consigned to Bonham’s, Bath.Chapman’s paintings are a record of a particular place and time. In 1958, the National Coal Board merged Ty Mawr Colliery with the Lewis Merthyr Colliery. Production ceased in 1983, and the site was razed to the ground. There is now no evidence of the industrial spoilation that once scarred Hopkinstown. The mine buildings have been replaced by a neat housing estate of cul-de-sacs with names such as Ty Mawr Road and Ty Mawr Parc. Close to the Rhondda River, on a narrow piece of land between Gyfeillon Road and the Treherbert-Cardiff passenger railway line, St David’s still stands – encircled now by mature trees. Church and Mine survives as a reminder of a valleys community – once dominated by coal mining and religion – that has long since changed. As such, it is an important historical record of the industrial face of Wales.Provenance: private collection Pembrokeshire, long term loan by vendor to Cardiff & County Club, Westgate Street, CardiffComments: framed, ready to hang

Lot 65

1967 Ford Lotus Cortina MK2 Series 1 saloon. reg. no. WTW 455F, an excellent older restoration with recent (2021) engine overhaul. The vendor, who is a very knowledgeable and capable car restorer, bought this Lotus Cotina in 2006 as a project. It hadn't run for 16 years and was in need of a total restoration. Systematically, he stripped the car down to the last nut and bolt and totally restored it over a 3 year period using all original parts where possible. The end result won him many prizes at classic car events with the underside of the car as polished and well finished as the top. In 2021 the engine was in need of attention, and owing to his advancing years, the owner instructed Steve Thomas Enterprises to overhaul it with Burton Power supplying many of the parts, totalling approximately £4000. Since the engine rebuild it has covered approximately 1188 miles and has bedded in nicely. The rest of the car has remained in excellent condition due to its pampered existence only showing some minor wear and tear which could easily be rectified. The overall appearance being that of a Lotus Cortina when it was nearly new. The underbonnet and underside are still probably better than when it left the factory, and is a joy to behold. It is supplied with a V5, old MOTs and a large history file of invoices and related ephemera. A lovely example which has been well maintained, and with the assurance of being an older restoration, there are no nasty surprises awaiting to appear, unlike some recent restorations. (Subject to 12% buyers' premium inclusive of VAT).

Lot 60

1934 Austin Seven RP two door saloon, reg. no. BEV 520, chassis no. 193145This lovely example of the enduringly popular Austin Seven has been owned by the vendor since 2009. He is a true Austin Seven enthusiast, having grown up with one and having personally owned several of them since the age of sixteen (he is now in his eighties!). The condition of the car is a tribute to his enthusiasm and knowledge of the marque. It is painted to a high standard with dark blue sides, black roof, bonnet and wings, and pleasingly retains its original black leather interior, which has a lovely patina. It runs very sweetly and is only being sold due the owner's advancing years. He bought it in 2012, having been previously well restored, including an engine overhaul. It is supplied with a history file including restoration bills from Marque specialists, old MOTs, V5 document, old photographs of the car before being restored and a bill of sale from 1955 from a gentleman in Alphamstone, Bures, Suffolk for the sum of £50, a handbook and related ephemera. (Subject to 12% buyers' premium inclusive of VAT).

Lot 61

1933 Alvis Firefly sports saloon coachwork by Cross & Ellis. reg. no. VK 8185 (see text), chassis No. 10652, engine no. 10652. Offered by Direction of Executors this attractive sporting Alvis saloon has been in storage in recent years and will require full restoration. It appears basically sound and mostly complete. Sadly, there is no paperwork or V5 document with the car, although it is registered on the DVLA database. The vendor believes her father purchased the car from Long Melford in Suffolk in around 1989. The Firefly Registrar from the Alvis Club has kindly confirmed that it was delivered from the factory to Swallow, Milburn & Co. Newcastle in 1932 and that the car was well known to him as it had belonged to a friend and that he had even worked on it in the 1970s.(email on file). (Subject to 12% buyers' premium inclusive of VAT).We have engaged the starting handle and the engine will turn over by hand, it appears the engine also has some compression. The steering engages and the car will roll and can be manoeuvred. There is evidence of significant (wood) rot around the car and we have uploaded lots of additional images to illustrate this. There are also additional images of the chassis available to view online. The chassis itself has surface rust but on inspection would appear to be solid, with evidence of previous waxoil application. The car is sold as a project requiring complete restoration. We strongly recommend viewing the car and we are happy to have a conversation over the phone or conduct a walk round video via WhatsApp for any interested parties. Please contact us on 01206 754754 to discuss further.

Lot 62

1929 Singer Junior 4-seater saloon, reg. no. VX 1239. 848cc engine, 3-speed gearbox. The vendor's husband describes the car as follows:"An older restoration but drives perfectly on the road. Driven and seriously campaigned by the same owners for 57 years. Two gearboxes, a petrol tank and radiator to go with the car.The Singer was bought from a scrapyard in Stanway, Essex, by local resident and vintage motoring enthusiast, Harry Booth, sixty-four years ago. It was in reasonable working condition and Harry’s daughter, Merriel, aged sixteen, decided it would be an ideal car in which to learn to drive. The extensive yard in front of “The Old Cottage Paint Shop”, Harry’s business in London Road, Stanway at the time, proved ideal for Merriel to practice gear-changes and become familiar with the controls of an elderly car, its accelerator between the clutch and the brake. But on returning from work one afternoon, she discovered that her Dad had sold the Singer to a couple from Great Maplestead who had answered an advertisement for a 1930s Sunbeam which he had for sale in Exchange and Mart. David and Sylvia Rouse were keen vintagents but decided that the Sunbeam was not for them and asked Harry if he had anything else he might like to sell, whereupon he suggested the Singer. A deal was done, the princely sum of £5 changed hands and the car was driven back to Maplestead, but when David opened the door, a mouse jumped out. That was in the summer of 1962.Returning home from work that evening, Merriel was most disappointed to discover that the Singer had gone. Some thirty years later she came across the car at a rally and declared, “That’s my car!”, to a surprised David Rouse who initially doubted her story, but after being shown a photograph of Merriel sitting on the bonnet, doubted no longer. After driving it home and having renewed the magneto cap, David immediately began to use the Singer as everyday transport travelling to and from Marconi in Chelmsford, where he worked as Patents Officer, twenty miles each way for nine months after which he decided that a major overhaul of the car might be sensible. He and Sylvia subsequently used the car mainly for Vintage Sports Car Club events, covering more than 44,000 miles whilst competing in hill climbs, driving tests, navigational rallies and tours. They were adamant that the car should never be trailered and would drive frequently as far as Llandrindod Wells, for example, on a Friday afternoon averaging 30mph or so, in order to compete on the Saturday. David kept a detailed record of every journey, time taken, average speed, oil used, and petrol consumed; it makes fascinating reading. On one occasion, they had driven from Maplestead to Builth Wells when the magneto began to misfire and the decision was taken to, “return home whilst the engine was still running”, a distance of around 450 miles, almost non-stop.The Rouses owned a number of vintage and classic cars, competing seriously in all of them, but the Singer was one of their favourites which they kept for 57 years. When David died in 2017, Sylvia decided that the time had come to sell the collection, but two remained, a BSA that had been David’s first, and the Singer which, when Merriel asked whether or not it had been sold, Sylvia replied, “But it’s yours if you’d like it.”Merriel has been its custodian since 2019 but it is now time for a new owner and the Singer will be sold at auction, all proceeds going to St Helena Hospice, Colchester".It is supplied with a massive history file, including photographs, which is a joy to read. A truly loved old car. (Subject to 12% buyers' premium inclusive of VAT).
