A rectangular leather bound and brass studded Personal Document Box, from Theo Christy, Saddlery and Military Cap Store, 12 Court St. Boston, inscribed on label: travelling and common trunks, whips, fire caps, buckets and copper riveted engine hose, with the name Wendell Phillips, by repute to be his box and given by a relative, and hence by descent, approx. 26cms (10"). (1)* Philips was born in Boston Massachusetts 1811, he was schooled at Boston Grammar School and later graduated form Harvard Law School, 1883, and then opened a Law Practice, Boston. Abolitionism: It was Phillips' contention that racial injustice was the source of all society's ills. In 1854 Phillips was indicted for his participation in the celebrated attempt to rescue Anthony Burns, a captured fugitive slave, from Boston Jail. On the eve of The Civil War, Phillips gave a speech at the New Bedford Lyceum in which he defended the Confederate right to secede. Phillips was also an early advocate for women's rights. In the July 3, 1846 issue of The Liberator, he called for securing women's rights to their property and earnings, as well as the ballot. He was also active in efforts to gain equal rights for Native Americans. In recognition for his efforts, Phillips had several public buildings, schools, monuments, awards and prizes named after him.

In December 1809, aged twenty-nine, he received the Freedom of the Clockmakers Company being raised to the Livery in January 1810. He served in various roles within the court, being Master five times and was the last of his family to hold the Royal Clockmaker's Warrant.
