A Chinese gilt bronze Gui, Hu Wenming, Ming Dynasty, 16th century, of ogee circular form with twin dragon handles, the main frieze cast in relief with Buddhist auspicious animals, within bandings of dissolved dragons and butterflies, on a high outward angled foot, the underside with incised four character seal of Hu Wenming7 x 18 x 12.7cmLiterature:For a similar bronze incnse burner signed by Hu Wenming and decorated with similar auspicious animals, see Power and Glory: Court Arts of China's Ming Dynasty, San Francisco, 2008, p.180 fig.111 Hu Wenming from Songjiang, Jiangsu province, is considered amongst the most skilled and gifted craftsman of the late Ming dynasty. His work was highly sort after by scholars and the literati to decorate their desks. The shape of the incense burner is inspired by an archaic prototype, gui, dating to the Zhou or Shang dynasties. Most examples depict animated creatures which have been drawn from the 'Classic of Mountains and Seas', Shan Hai Jing. However, this example is decorated with some of the Eight Buddhist Emblems, bajixiang. General rubbing of gilt commensurate with age. Interior oxidisation.

Of hexagonal form with a petal lobed rim, decorated with a motif of lingzhi fungus branches along the exterior, bounded by geometric borders. The interior decorated with a single fungus inside a medallion. Marked along the underside with a six-character Qianlong seal mark in underglaze blue. With a Christie's label adhered along the interior. A CHINESE SOAPSTONE SEAL carved with a double-headed dragon, on a square plinth, the underside carved "In Jen Ji Zhan" (seal of In Jen), 8cm high x 6cm wide Provenance: A French private collection and thence by descent. The imprint of this seal appears to correspond directly with the one illustrated in the Qing dai di hou xi yin pu, "The imperial seals of Qing dynasty emperors and empresses" vol. 4, concerning the seals of the the emperor Yongzheng.

A Chinese gilt bronze censer. Cast with spurious Ming six character seal mark to base, of compressed globular form, the bowl incised with a figure on horseback and another in landscape, 21cm diam. Condition Report: Overall in good condition. The metal has some small knocks and scratches (the majority likely as a result of the production process). No obvious dents. Interior is tarnished with areas of discolouration. Shows signs of wear consistent with age and usage. Would benefit from a clean.
