A fine Chinese soapstone seal, Qianlong (1736-1795), with original Spink receipt, the square section seal carved from buff soapstone with reddish brown inclusions, surmounted by a kylin, the base inscribed 'The seal of your subject Ching Jung', the front with finely incised calligraphy, 'I wish I could bequeath to posterity some exquisite works of art and to my descendants the memory of a noble life by Shou Shih', 7.4cm. high.* Provenance: Spink and Son, 1948, purchase price £10.0.0, accompanied by the original receipt dated 21 July 1948.** Condition: Good condition. Minor chips to corners and edges, small chip to tail of kylin. Good patina.
A good Chinese Canton carved ivory card case, 19th century, finely carved throughout with figures, a boat, a seated noblewoman in a wheeled chair and pagodas amidst trees, flowering shrubs and flowers, the lower corners carved with pairs of peaches, pull-off cover, containing a folded piece of pink laid paper with stamped Mandarin seal, the paper inscribed 'Mandarin of Chung Chou', 4½ x 3in. (11.5 x 7.6cm.).* Condition: - Case: Very good condition, with no faults. - Paper: Tiny hole and folded in three.
An antique Chinese watercolour on silk of a bird, probably 19th century, the white feathered bird perched upon a peony branch, signed with four red seal marks and inscribed with black calligraphy, lined black border, 25½ x 16 3/8in. (64.75 x 41.5cm.), in a modern giltwood frame with bevelled mount.* Condition: Colours bright. Some sooty dirty marks and small scuffs visible to silk and it has been rolled at some time - it is a little cockled and there are some small vertical crease marks and some light horizontal crease marks to the centre areas from that rolling. A line of spot spill marks visible at a diagonal across the upper third of the painting - there are signs that an attempt has been made to restore these at some time, leaving feint, slightly darker-than-background marks around the spot marks. Two small patches of damage to the surface of the silk at lower centre right margin and a few dirty marks to silk at lower right corner.
A Chinese porcelain wucai fish bowl, seal mark of Qianlong but later, probably 20th century, of tapered cup form, decorated in polychrome enamels in the typical palette with a floral spray and butterflies, below a ruyi border and double concentric circles to rim and foot, 5¼in. (13.3cm.) high.* Condition: Some glaze scratching to rim and some small scratches to glaze to exterior. No chips, cracks or other damage. No restoration. Very good overall.
An 18th century Chinese carved soapstone seal, the square section seal carved with a cloud deity, seated with incised clouds beneath, single character mark incised to base, 2¼in. (5.7cm.) high.* Condition: Two small chips to corners of base and a few other fleabite nibbles to edges of base. No other chips or damage elsewhere. Good patina.
A finely carved Chinese cinnabar lacquer snuff bottle, Qianlong mark and probably period (1736-95), the flattened ovoid body carved with auspicious objects on a diaper ground, within floral and foliate borders, conforming rosette stopper with spoon, signed with seal mark to base, 7.2cm. high.

(4.1cm.) diameter; together with other Canton carved ivory games including a tangram qiqiaoban puzzle similar carved decoration, 2 1/8in. (5.4cm.) square; a three sphere puzzle ball seal; two dice shakers, a dice and a set of draughts / backgammon stones, red and natural stained. (22)* Condition: - Counter box: Four tiny frits to edge of cover. Otherwise good.- Tangram: Contains seven pieces. Very good condition with no faults.- Puzzle ball: Two small chips to edge of base. Otherwise good.- Shakers: Red example has light wear to colour. No other faults.- Draughts: Red set has some light wear to colour. Otherwise good.
A matched pair of Chinese porcelain blue and white saucer dishes, one with Jiaqing seal mark (1796-1820) and possibly of the period, the other with Daoguang seal mark (1821-50) and probably of the period, both painted with flowers amidst scrolling foliage, below a foliate and lotus flower border, 6in. (15.25cm.) diameter. (2)* Condition: - Jiaqing mark: Very good condition, with no faults.- Daoguang mark: Old 1.5in. hairline from rim, which has discoloured to brown. Four tiny firing cracks to foot. No other faults.
A Chinese bronze dragon, probably originally a handle, with silver metal inlaid scale decoration, 6¼in. (15.8cm.) long; together with a 19th century Chinese porcelain famille verte snuff bottle, decorated with two dragons chasing a flaming pearl above a tumultuous sea, the neck with lemon yellow lingi pendant and Greek key borders, with iron red painted seal mark, 3in. (7.5cm.) high, chips to shoulder. (2)* Condition: - Bronze dragon: Two screw thread holes to front of body, so probably original a handle from a large vase or jardiniere. Has a good patina overall and has not been polished - there are two patches of wear to the patination & silver inlay to the sides of the dragon's upper body. Two small paint splash marks to tail and a little verdigris between scales on back. No damage to bronze. - Snuff bottle: two large flakes from glaze to shoulder of bottle and two other large flakes which have old touched in painting to the shoulder. Lacks stopper. No other faults - enamelled decoration in good condition.

A FINE AND RARE CHINESE IMPERIAL WUCAI 'ODE TO THE RED CLIFF' WINE CUP SIX CHARACTER KANGXI MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1662-1722 With a deep conical body and a gently flaring rim, painted on one side with the poet Su Shi with two friends and an attendant in a flat-bottomed boat floating on calm waters towards a tall overhanging cliff-face, the reverse inscribed with a poem by Su Shi (1037-1101) from the Chibi fu ('Ode to the Red Cliff'), and a seal to the reverse, with a circular paper label for John Sparks to the interior, 5.2cm. The poem reads: 'I raised my wine cup and toasted my guests, joining them in chanting the Ode to the bright moon and the song of Sylphs'. The seal reads: 'Elegance'. GAO SHI KUI (20TH CENTURY) PEONIES A Chinese scroll painting, ink and colour on paper, inscribed and signed with three artist's seals and one illegible seal. Together with another butterflies and flower painting by Wang Xue Tao, ink and colour on paper, inscribed and signed with one artist's seal, 88cm x 48.5cm. (2) Provenance: from the collection of Lin Wen Zhi (d.1994) acquired in the 1950s and thence by descent. Lin was the oldest son of a wealthy and influential family, he studied at the University of Shanghai during the 1920s, he was sent from Shanghai to Singapore to help in his uncle's business. XU CAO (1899-1961) PORTRAIT OF ZHONG KUI A Chinese scroll painting, ink and colour on paper, inscribed and signed fu zi tian lai Yan Sun Xu Cao with an artist's seal which reads Xu Cao, 57cm x 31.5cm. Provenance: from the collection of Lin Wen Zhi (d.1994) acquired in the 1950s and thence by descent. AFTER LENG MEI (19TH CENTURY) LADY GONG SUN'S SWORD DANCE A Chinese scroll painting, ink and colour on silk, signed Dong Ming Leng Mei zhi, and one illegible seal, 63cm x 30cm. Provenance: from an English private collection, acquired c.1999 with a label which reads Christie's 24 June 1999, lot 328. Lady Gong Sun's inventive sword dances in the Kaiyuan reign (713-741) of the Tang dynasty inspired the cursive calligraphy of Zhang Xu (c.675-741) and poetry of Du Fu (712-770). Wu Dao Zi (680-750), the great master of figure painting, was similarly inspired by the sword dance of General Pei. XU BEI HONG (1895-1953) BAMBOO A Chinese scroll paining, ink on paper, inscribed, dated and signed by Xu Bei Hong, with two artist's seals, and one collector's seal which reads xin zhong cang zhi, 80cm x 32.5cm. Provenance: an English private collection. The inscription to the left says it was given to Mei Nu dao zhang, (Xie Mei Nu 1913-1991 was a famous seal carver and calligrapher) as a gift, and then given to Li Shou Zeng (1889-1962, a collector) for his generous donation to the China Academy of Art in 1932. 徐悲鴻(1895-1953) 墨竹圖 水墨紙本 立軸款識:新篁類長留,梅奴道長惠存。悲鴻。李壽增先生所藏伊汀洲書,寶天下巨蹟,今捐美術學院先生寶怡終之。卅二年夏日重慶南岸,涼風埡遣真。悲鴻。鈐印:徐、東海王孫、來源:英國私人收藏,藏家父親獲贈于1960-1080年代。據羅光磊(謝梅奴學生)2009年2月1日在長沙晚報上面刊登的一篇《謝梅奴與徐悲鴻的白梅圖》記載,梅奴先生回憶當時徐悲鴻為了保護伊秉綬(1754-1815)的四條隸書屏,請梅奴先生幫忙聯繫到了當時的此隸書藏家李壽增。李先生知曉徐悲鴻是為國家保護文物而不是私人想買深為感動,願將四條屏贈予中央美術學院。徐悲鴻獲悉后為表達謝意特地送了一幅當時在重慶的舊作《墨竹圖》並提款說明收藏伊秉綬隸書屏的經過以志紀念,後又贈送了文章提到的白梅圖,此件拍品便是當時徐悲鴻所贈的竹圖。謝梅奴(1913-1991)師從書法篆刻家唐醉石及藝術大師齊白石,自幼酷爱书法篆刻傾心研究數十年,蜚聲海外。三十年代就與徐悲鴻交往甚密并為其刻章。李壽增(1902-1968),李氏四兄弟開設四怡堂藥店,壽增曾任經理。其弟李景陶曾任上海儲備銀行長沙分行行長,因而李氏兄弟有名譽長沙金融界。李壽增解放前為孤兒院、公醫院,救濟原董事長等。長沙和平解放後,他積極參與重建工作并以開明紳商選為長沙市人民代表會議代表等。
GUO MO RUO (1892-1978) CALLIGRAPHY IN RUNNING SCRIPT A hanging scroll of Chinese calligraphy, ink on paper, inscribed and signed Guo Mo Ruo with one artist's seal, together with another painting of swallows, 63.5cm x 31.5cm. (2) Provenance: from a private collection, the calligraphy was a gift to the current owner's father, Li Bo Yan (1913-1983), by the artist, in appreciation for his help and support given to him during the Chinese Civil War. Li Bo Yan was born in Beijing, after his graduation from Yan Jing University, he became the Vice Principle at the School of Classical Theatrical Art, and was friends of great Beijing Opera stars like Mei Lan Fang. From 1937 to 1943, he joined the Chinese Government Foreign Service as a diplomat, first as chancellor in Poland and then as attaché in Turkey.
