FINE CHINESE WUCAI ‘DRAGON & PHOENIX’ PORCELAIN BOWL, JIAQING MARK AND PERIOD, EARLY 19th CENTURY Decorated with two descending phoenixes between green and iron-red dragons chasing flaming pearls below a band of the eight Buddhist emblems and ruyi heads around the rim. The interior decorated with another iron-red dragon. Six-character seal mark of Jiaqing to base and of the period (1796-1820). CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN ‘BAJIXIANG’ EWER AND COVER, 20th CENTURY The pouring vessel modelled on the archaic bronze ‘He’, a ritual wine vessel. The globular body and diagonally set spout supported by four legs with a squat neck leading into a curved handle and cover. Decorated with ‘Bajixiang’, the eight Buddhist emblems. The interior base of the spout has seven separate holes. Qianlong seal mark to base but later. Together with a hardwood stand with carved Yin-Yang emblem. 23.5cm length 22.5cm tall without stand. Heath had an attraction to this form. During his time in Hong Kong, he attended a Christie’s sale of ‘Fine Chinese Ceramics, Jade and Works of Art’ at the Mandarin Hotel on 13th January 1987. Lot 524 a similar ewer without cover he marked down in his catalogue (Catalogue part of lot 71). Provenance: Private English collection of Sir Mark Heath KCVO CMG (1927-2005), and thence by descent.

Chinese embroidered banner, the dark maroon canvas ground with pair of phoenix over flowerhead roundel with four character seal mark, appliquéd calligraphy below and embroidered pine sprigs to corner with silk metallic ribbon border and fringing, the reverse with applied fabric panel with painted calligraphic inscription, contained in a modern reversible gilt frame. Frame size 140cm x 74cm.

Duveen & Sons, Liverpool; private collection, consigned via our Cardiff office Auctioneer's Note: Legendary Dutch dealer Joseph Duveen set up shop in Hull in 1866, followed by Liverpool, and eventually as his empire grew, in London, Paris and finally New York, where his dealership was patronised by the millionaire elite of American society. His canny marketing ensured that the collecting of antique blue and white delft, Chinese Kangxi porcelain and Old master paintings became extremely fashionable, and he dominated the art market around the turn of the 19th Century.
