Footnote: The decoration and text on this piece appear to relate to the life and times of Ban Jieyu, consort to Han Dynasty emperor Chengdi. Jieyu was a great scholar and poet, credited with writing 'Yuan Ge Xing' or 'Song of Resentment' in which she compares herself with a discarded fan. In portraits Jieyu is often depicted holding a fan, as in the present item.
