CONDITION REPORT: A 15cm section of body professionally restored. Light fritting to rim. Small rim chip and chip to foot interior.

A Chinese famille rose, lobed-square Bowl, mark of Xianfeng (1851-61) and of the period, the exterior finely enamelled with shou on a ground of cell diaper between rui heads and false gadroons, the interior bright green, six character seal mark in red, small chip at foot and hair crack, 11.5cm CONDITION REPORT: Small chip on the foot. Small hairline crack. Small section of kiln fritting to the yellow-ground rim.

A large and unusual brass Seal, late 19th century, the high rectangular plinth cast with a recumbent horse, its head turned back and with a puzzled monkey on its flank, the animals' hair left purposely rough for effect, with a good patina, the base polished, 6.2cm The seal characters read: Yanling Ji Zi (?)yi chuanjia (?) (a seal to pass on to later generations to remember the righteousness of Ji Zi, i.e. Ji Zha (576-485 BCE) in Yanling). The monkey and horse are commonly represented in Chinese art. The horse, ma, and the monkey, hou, form a rebus: mashang fenghou: 'May you immediately be appointed to a high-ranking position'. CONDITION REPORT: No obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.

A bronze Seal, 16th/17th century, simply, but effectively modelled as a single-horned, mythical beast squatting with up-raised head, 5.5cm The seal characters read: Chengshi hanmo (a seal belonging to someone whose surname was Cheng and made specifically for use with calligraphy). As is frequently pointed out by Rose Kerr in her ground-breaking Later Chinese Bronzes, V&A, 1990, dating bronzes from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties is fraught with problems. However, the present seal characters are enclosed by chilong close in handling to those cast on the leg of a tripod censer illustrated op cit, pl. 23, and dated to 16th/17th century. CONDITION REPORT: Some small knock marks to side of base, otherwise no obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.
