Lot 1876

Ch'ing Dynasty, 1723-1735 AD. A pair of shallow porcelain dishes with white ground, decorated in enamels in the 'Doucai' style showing a five-claw dragon chasing a sacred pearl internally with cloud scrolls to inner rim and swirling waves and cloud scrolls to underside; six-character mark and of the period seal in underglaze blue of emperor Yong-Zheng (Yung-cheng) to bases. 166 grams total, 12cm diameter. (4 3/4"). Property of a London collector; acquired Hong Kong, 1970s. The Chinese term doucai means joined colours and was technically difficult and required two firings: the design's outline is painted in under glaze blue, the piece is glazed, then fired at a high temperature. The outlines were then coloured in with red, yellow, green and aubergine over glaze enamels, and the object was fired again at a lower temperature. [2] Very fine condition. Rare.

Lot 1953

19th century AD. A carved dark onyx seal with pyramidal back pierced for suspension and green silk cord loop; the square face with two incuse stylised Chinese characters. 8.05 grams, 17mm square (3/4"). Property of a Warwickshire gentleman; formerly in the private collection of the famous actor Leslie Phillips; acquired 1950-1960. Born in 1924 in London, Leslie Phillips attended the Italia Conti Academy where he developed the slightly affected accent which became his trademark. He usually played a roguish, suave charmer, and also enjoyed successful comic roles in the early Carry On films and on radio’s The Navy Lark. He has appeared in more than fifty films, plays and TV series spanning six decades; and recently gained new fans through his appearances in the Harry Potter films. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours; promoted to Commander (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

A mixed group comprising: a square-section ivory chop seal with domed top and a small magnetic compass set in one side (with cardinal points in Chinese characters), the square face showing four Chinese characters in reserve; a 'house'-shaped ivory chop seal, the top carved with two addorsed human-headed fish and pierced for suspension, the rectangular face with incuse two columns of four stylised Chinese characters; a cylindrical boxwood chop seal, with circular face showing three Chinese characters in reserve; all three with red ink residue to the seal surfaces from use. 29 grams total, 28-30mm long (seal faces 13-27mm) (1 (1/2 - 1)"). BANKNOTES, 紙鈔, CHINA - EMPIRE, GENERAL ISSUES, 中國 - 帝國中央發行,Ming Dynasty 明朝 (1368-1644): 1-Kuan (1000-Cash) 大明寶鈔, issued by Emperor Hung Wu (1368-99), made of mulberry paper from the mulberry tree, top: six chinese characters ”Ta Ming T'ung Hsing Pao Cha's” (Treasure Note of the Great Ming) in K'ai Shu style, at centre: value ”1 Kuan” (Ten Strings) in K'ai Shu style (at this period one String was equlvalent to 100 copper cash) with pictorial presentation of Ten Strings (1-Kuan) below, to left: ”T'ien Hsia T'ung Hsing” (To Circulate For Ever And Ever Under The Heavens), to right: ”Ta Ming Pao Cha'o” (Great Ming Treasure Note), Chinese text lower centre meaning ”This note of the Great Ming is printed with the approval of the Hung Wu Emperor (year 1368-1398) through the Hu Pao (the Ming Finance Department) and used side by side with copper cash. Those who counterfeit the Great Ming notes will be beheaded while an informant will be rewarded with 250 Taels of silver and with confiscated property of the convicts into the bargain”, red square seal on the back (equivalent of a signature), 340mm x 222mm (P AA10; SM T36-20). Medium sized hole at lower left, a few smaller holes across note, some paper weakness and small tears in top edge, some stains across note and hevy horizontal fold at centre, otherwise fine. ex Sophus Black Collection, renowned Danish collector and engineer who was employed by the Great Northern Telegraph Company and stationed in China from 1902 to 1931. Black collected Chinese arts and antiques during his stay in China. He donated numerous items from his collection to museums, including the National Museum of Denmark, and other parts of his collection were offered at auctions in Asia and Europe.
