Notre: Born in Dufang, Jiangsu, China in 1953, Zhu Xinjian studied painting, ancient Chinese painting and old texts at the Nankin Academy of Arts from which he graduated in 1980. Following this academic cursus, he extensively traveled China and developed an interest in classical Chinese literature. Like major Chinese painters of the 20th century, such as Xu Beihong and Zao Wou-Ki, he went to France, a milestone for any artist, and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (Paris Fine Arts College). He then developed a fascination for women subjects and even drew erotic sketches. In 1990, several of his paintings were exhibited at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. 美人图-朱新建 (中国, 1953-2014) NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. AN AUSPICIOUS 'MONKEY AND DEER' CUP AND SAUCER, XIANFENG MARK AND PERIODChina, 1851-1861. The tall cup with a short foot and everted rim, the saucer with deep rounded sides, each with gilt rims and painted in bright enamels with a monkey in a pine tree above a spotted deer with a lingzhi sprig in its mouth, surrounded by rockwork and further lingzhi, with a butterfly and magpies in flight. The bases each with an iron-red four-character seal mark Xianfeng nianzhi and of the period. (2)Provenance: The property of an English gentleman, acquired in the 1990s and early 2000s. The saucer with an old paper label, manually inscribed in brown ink 'No. 2. […]'.Condition: Excellent condition with only minor old wear and firing flaws.Weight: 72.0 g (the cup) and 82.9 g (the saucer)Dimensions: Height 7 cm (the cup), Diameter 12.7 cm (the saucer)The present lot is filled with auspicious imagery. 'Bird' (que) is a pun for 'noble rank' (jue), and magpies are traditionally associated with joy. The deer (lu) is both a homophone for riches or official emolument and a symbol of longevity and wealth. Lingzhi are also associated with longevity and therefore often depicted together with deer. Depictions of monkeys convey a wish for high rank, as the Chinese word for monkey (hou) is a homophone for 'high-ranking noble' or 'commander'. The word for butterfly (die) is homophonous with 'to repeat', so adding a butterfly to a scene repeats the wish of the other symbols. Butterflies are also seen as symbols of happiness in marriage, as well as everlasting romantic love, and can also symbolize a wish for long life. AN IMPORTANT FAMILLE ROSE VASE, YONGZHENG MARK AND PROBABLY OF THE PERIODChina, 18th-19th century. The ovoid body rising from the short tapered foot to a waisted neck with everted lip. Superbly enameled in bright colors with some details and contours painted in iron-red to depict pairs of animals, including phoenixes, cranes, birds, and ducks, amid peony blossoms and other flowers, swirling clouds, rockwork, and a gnarled leafy maple tree. The base with an underglaze-blue six-character seal mark da Qing Yongzheng nianzhi and probably of the period.Provenance: Estate of Jacqueline Kemp, owner of Windsor Antiques in Darien, Connecticut, USA.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing flaws, particularly to interior of neck, as well as a glaze line (ca. 2.4 cm long) to the shoulder which is near-invisible to the naked eye and does not reach the rim.Weight: 1,792 gDimensions: Height 21.5 cmThe present vase was likely originally gifted to a married couple, as all animals depicted on the vase appear in pairs.Expert's note: The present vase belongs to a small group of early Yongzheng-marked ceramics with intense, bright colors and fine enameling and painting. A famille rose dish sold at Christie's in 2016 (see Auction result comparison), for example, shows similarly painted and enameled peony blossoms, two similar tones of green enamel, a similarly “diluted” tone of blue enamel, contours and minute details all neatly picked out in underglaze iron-red, and pitting, all clear and distinct characteristics also found on the present vase. Given the compelling evidence, it can be suggested that the present vase comes from the same workshop, if not the same hand, as the Christie's dish.Auction result comparison: Compare a related famille rose dish, also with a Yongzheng mark in underglaze blue and showing a similar color palette and style of painting, at Christie's New York in Collected in America: Chinese Ceramics from the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 15 September 2016, lot 932, sold for USD 60,000. Collected in America: Chinese Ceramics from the Metropolitan Museum of Art 2016年9月15日 lot 932, 售價USD 60,000。

Warrior; China; late 19th - early 20th century.Porcelain.Loss of the blade of the sword. It presents seal in the interior zone of the base.Measurements: 50 x 21 x 20 cm.Round sculpture made of enamelled porcelain. The piece represents a warrior, dressed in his armour, which stands out for the detail and the chromatic explosion of all the details that make it up.Objects of Chinese origin, such as porcelain, have been known in the West since ancient times. As some of the Prado Museum's catalogues state, "Chinese manufacturers soon realised that Europeans were not experts in porcelain and produced a vulgar, even flawed porcelain for export, but which in the eyes of Westerners were authentic works of art. Once the trade was regularly organised, the India Companies supplied Chinese artists with European models, both for forms and decoration. Throughout the 18th century, the blue-and-white series persisted, but of inferior quality, which was then called Nanjing porcelain, and especially the famille rose type.
