A 17th century German Baroque style silver-gilt tankardJoachim Krumpholtz, Leipzig circa 1669, with later French import mark 1838-1864Cylindrical form, a hinged convex cover with stepped plain central panel and embossed decorative border above a wide polished rim, opening to reveal a gilt interior, to the top a large spherical thumbpiece, a C-scroll handle beneath with central beading terminating in a shield, the whole in silver and gilt, high and low relief repoussé and chased Baroque style floral and foliate motifs to the body, all on three ball feet, height 23cm, diameter 16cm, weight 37oz.Footnotes:Joachim Krumpholtz, a native of Leipzig, became a master goldsmith on 16 August 1669. From 1688 he was elected Obermeister (Chief Master of the Goldsmiths' Guild) eleven times. An 18th century wood tankard with silver mountsunmarked, mounts circa 1776 Cylindrical form with banded sides and two raffia bands, the hinged cover with a carved flower head, upper and lower silver mounts and applied silver roundel to the front, engraved with the crest of a Saracen's head, the upper mount inscribed in script lettering 'To his friend Peregrine Bertie Esq 1776 - The gift of Francis Mundy Esq', height 18.5cm.Footnotes:This is the crest of the Lincolnshire family of Barons Willoughby. Two George III silver tankardsPeter and Ann Bateman, London 1795 and Benjamin Bickerton, London 1761 Both of traditional baluster form, with later decoration, with leaf-capped double scroll handle on a spreading circular foot, the first later embossed in high and low relief with a hunting scene featuring two hounds and pheasants in a woodland landscape, the whole overhung with trees forming a cartouche bearing an inscribed armorial and the motto 'TIMERE SPERNO', and a gilt interior, the other tankard later embossed with a pastoral landscape roaming with sheep and surrounded by trees, inscribed with the same armorial as the first, height 13cm, weight total 21.5oz.
