AN EXCEPTIONAL GERMAN CARVED IVORY AND SILVER MOUNTED TANKARD WITH ROMAN BATTLE SCENE, HANAU, CIRCA 1880-1890. The cylindrical form masterfully carved in high relief with a chaotic Roman battle scene of mounted horseman battling Turks below a silver compressed domical cover with embossed and chased horsemen in strapwork reserves and surmounted with a well carved Roman feathered helmet finial. The ivory handle emanating from an elephant head mount, well carved with an amusing seated soldier displaying sword and shield. The shaped silver foot embossed with lounging Roman soldiers within strapwork cartouches, and with later Augsburg marks. Height 16.5 inches (42 cm). A Russian silver gilt and cloisonne enamel tankard, by Ovchinnikov, Moscow 1894, of barrel form, the hinged lid with central medallion, scroll handle with bifurcated thumbpiece, decorated all over with a diaper lattice pattern beneath a band of flower heads, impressed marks, 31.56toz, 19cm high.
A Georgian Silver Tankard, with plain round body, and scroll handle , on a collet foot, Newcastle, 1756, by John Langlands I and John Goodrick ( John Langlands and John Goodrick were in partnership from 1754 until Goodrick`s early death in 1757, aged only 30. Both Langlands and Goodrick as young men had been apprenticed to the Newcastle silversmith Isaac Cookson. John Langlands I continued working as a silversmith in Newcastle until 1793)
