A very rare Meissen underglaze-blue-decorated large pewter-mounted cylindrical tankard, circa 1720-23Painted probably by J.G. Höroldt in underglaze-blue with a chinoiserie scene depicting a standing and a seated figure flanking a table, with further figures, including a woman holding a baby, to the sides, flanked by flowering plants, trees and rockwork, birds and insects in flight overhead, a seeded trellis band reserved with quatrelobe flower panels around the foot, the handle with a flower between two leaves, the pewter cover with ball thumbpiece, 23cm high including coverFootnotes:See U. A RUSSIAN TANKARD, post 1876, 84 standard, of swept cylindrical form chased with six vacant oval bosses linked by panels of scrolling foliage on a cannetille type ground enclosing winged cherub masks, the hinged low domed cover centrally engraved "M" and with pine cone thumb-piece, the scroll handle with bearded mask, stamped 84/St George & the Dragon/IIT/4778/84/U, 7 1/2" high over thumbpiece, 15ozs (Est. plus 21% premium inc. VAT)Whilst the circular "hinge" fits (lacks pin to hold it together) when open, closed the cover does not fit and so some adjustment is required - possibly the scrolled thumb-piece on top has been pushed forward into the cover and dented?? One cherub mask on cover pushed in. Handle good. No splits or holes - body generally good. Foot rim squashed and dented nearly all the way around so does not sit flat
